Okay, didn’t know that they use different connectors. Apparently Thunderbolt 3 uses the connector of USB-C. Apple sells an adaptor that has a Thunderbolt female to male USB-C connector. I would check your Apogee manual to see if this connector can be used.
Here’s an Amazon link to the adapter:
Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQ26QIY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_4GDPAB2BK6AZC78G8708
I have a 5Dt with a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter that I use with my 2017 iMac with Catalina. Is this the adapter you have? https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B01MQ26QIY/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=thunderbolt+2+to+thunderbolt+3&qid=1595702175&sr=8-3
You are going to have far better luck using the proper Thunderbolt 4 card matched to your motherboard then converting down from Thunderbolt 4 to Thunderbolt 2 using an adapter. Remember, Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapters are bidirectional AND reversable. A Thunderbolt 3 host can support a Thunderbolt 1/2 device. But also a Thunderbolt 1/2 Host can support a Thunderbolt 3 device. Either way works. The older card in the newer computer may work, if you already have it just throw it in and give it a shot. Personally I'd just get the TB4 card designed for your motherboard and convert down.
(There are some situations where the male / female configuration doesn't work very well, there are other adapters that have a different setup that might work better.)
One of these? what do I stick in the other end?
It looks like I will need an adapter as the other iMacs I have access to have the newer USB-C type thunderbolt and the other has the old style. Would I be able to use this adapter with a thunderbolt 2 cable to attempt a file transfer?
Thunderbolt 1/2 to Thunderbolt 3 $49
Bi-directional AND reversable [upstream or downstream, i.e. TB3 host to TB1/2 device or TB1/2 host to TB3 device]
I just used Apple's (Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter)[https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQ26QIY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1] and it's plug n play. I use the keyboard/mouse to wake it just like I did with my iMac and haven't had any issues with it. I love this display - performs so well and looks amazing at the same time.
I think you have to use a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 (usb c)adapter and have to use a Thunderbolt port on a dock or from your computer. I am still waiting on my computer but this adapter works on my Thunderbolt 4 owc dock when I use my wife’s M1 air. It also worked connected directly to M1 air. It has to use a Thunderbolt port so depends on your dock
> without any dongles?
I don't think so, the MacBook will probably need this USB C to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. And I don't think this will charge the MacBook.
But I believe the Thinkpad will work with just a USB C to USB C cable.
The apogee has thunderbolt 1 or 2 connectors, which use the Mini DisplayPort connector style. Your Mac has the usb-c port connector style. So, you need an adapter, which Apple among others makes:
Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQ26QIY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KH5WVGS36GNAQJQB10ND
Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MQ26QIY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_9SF2PN23D49BP6WCAHJB
Something like this will work with a regular thunderbolt 2 cable (not only Mini DisplayPort, they share a same adapter shape).
I strongly suggest reading up on different ports available for computers and the like, it’s very useful information to know.
So here is what I've tried.
Macbook Pro with Retina Display:
USB-C to VGA
USB-C to DVI
USBC to HDMI - DVI
I get the same dizziness from all three. I tried to do USB-C to Thunderbolt to DVI
(Thunderbolt is how the Macbook Air communicates). However, this dongle converter didn't allow me to send a signal into any monitor. Nothing happened or registered on screen.
I should also mention the same behavior happened on my prior 2012 Mac Mini with the same two displays. My 2018 Mac Mini is connected to the displays via a Thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt 1 adapter, on the 2012 Mac Mini there was just a direct Thunderbolt 1 connection on the back. The left display is the one which is directly connected to the Mac Mini, the display on the right is then daisy-chained to the left display.
This appears to be an issue with the daisy-chaining. I am maybe going to swap the displays this weekend and keep the initial connection going to the left display and see if the same behavior occurs on the right display.
Anyone else out there with two daisy-chained Thunderbolt Displays seeing this same behavior when connecting remotely?
4/5 stars on Amazon with the top description mentioning Sierra and the third reviewer mentioning using it for their 2013 MBP with Thunderbolt 2 ports.
Perhaps yours was defective?
I just looked at the LG monitor through their website and it does use Thunderbolt 2 which is older than the Thunderbolt 3 on your Razer Blade.
Thunderbolt's confusion stems from it's use of Mini DisplayPort for the second generation (Thunderbolt 2 monitors will not work over MDP) and it's use of USB-C for gen3 - phones can have USB-C but not thunderbolt, for example.
USB passthrough should function fine.
I think you're best off getting a TB3 drive and use the Apple TB2 - TB3 adapter https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01MQ26QIY/
You likely won't find a tb2 drive that you want.
> mac-air from 2017 with thunderbolt 2 connector.
UPDATED: see thread below on single vs dual DP over TB2 for this MBA.
This may support only one external monitor via TB2. (Apple ~~never advertised~~ currently advertises only 1 supported - https://support.apple.com/kb/SP753?locale=en_US, the hardware on A1466 does support dual DP over TB2 which should handle dual external monitors with some limits, partially due to 20Gbps total bandwidth on TB2)
In theory, I had some success connecting TB3 docks via https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQ26QIY + https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WVDGZM6 on MBP 13" 2015 with TB2 but this cannot work with USB-C DP docks (only true Thunderbolt docks) + only 1 external display via dock worked for me (e.g., with CaldDigit TS3+ connected with TB2->TB3 adapter it appears to work at times but may require plugging / unplugging monitors a couple of times for me - not clear if it's more of an issue with my setup yet). Take into account the risk that you may not get dual monitors over TB2 in a stable manner, even with hardware supporting it. I don't personally have success stories on older MBA, but it may also depend on macOS version. It would be significantly cheaper (and potentially safer in terms of not having to return a bunch of equipment back if doesn't work in the end) to use miniDP to DP cable instead for one monitor. (into MBA TB2 port)
Unless you add DisplayLink "USB video card" https://www.displaylink.com/products/ (not great for video, can be laggy) or manage to make eGPU work via TB2 (e.g., like in https://egpu.io/forums/builds/2017-13-macbook-air-5th-2c-u-rx460-16gbps-tb3tb2-razer-core-x-macos-10-15-4-steve_pan/ + https://github.com/mayankk2308/kryptonite) - only one external monitor will be definitely supported.
> work hp work laptop with usb-c, dp and hdmi connector
Need exact model, so we can look up specs (not just HP Pavillion 14, but ideally its product code like 14t-dv000).
11th gen CPU GE76 Raider https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GE76-Raider-11UX/Specification supports TB4, older based on 10th gen https://us.msi.com/Laptop/GE76-Raider-10UX/Specification https://www.ultrabookreview.com/45486-msi-ge76-raider-review/ apparently doesn't support Thunderbolt at all. Which one is it?
You can get a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter here. But that is a Thunderbolt 2 device, and your MacBook most likely has Thunderbolt 3 ports which are not backward compatible. So you need a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter like this one.
That should work but I can't guarantee that it will or how reliably. Good luck.
And just an FYI you can still get firewire to work on a modern Mac... I just hooked up a DV camera to my M1 Macbook about 6 months ago you need to use both of these adapters:
If money's not tight, I'd go for the MBPro16 ARM - more ports, dedicated power, better cooling and screen. You'll need a TB2 to TB3 adapter.
According to Focusrite, your Clarett is BigSur/M1 compatible, and there are some recent drivers.
Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B01MQ26QIY
Something like Satechi's USB-C multiport MX adapter or HyperShop's Dual 4K HDMI 10-in-1 USB-C hub would work, but you would need to install software to get the dual HDMI ports to work. HyperShop's VIPER 10-in-2 USB-C hub may not need software and would give you some USB and dual display ports without being more than $200.
If you need FireWire support, you would need to go Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 and use a Thunderbolt 2 to FireWire adapter or get a dedicated enclosure (example).
You need a thunderbolt 1 cables (fits the iMac port) and two usb 3 port adapters for the MacBook Pro.

I just bought one of these Apple TB2 - TB3 adapters
It has the same lightning bolt symbol on both ends.
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B01MQ26QIY
I've been using Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter - is this what you have, too?
I'm not entirely sure what the end result you are trying to accomplish here, but it sounds like you are considering purchasing a new M1 Macbook and you have a Firewire device and a display with a DisplayPort connection and want to use a dock/hub to facilitate all of your devices?
Thunderbolt and USB are needlessly confusing standards, but basically speaking Thunderbolt is a data transfer standard that includes DisplayPort lanes as part of that standard for transferring video signal. Essentially, all devices that are Thunderbolt enabled use DisplayPort for delivering video signal. Depending on the device the port for delivery is different, so your 2012 Macbook Pro uses the older Thunderbolt 2 standard over a miniDisplayPort...port (I hate DisplayPort as a name lol) and the newer M1 Macbooks use Thunderbolt 3 over a USB-C port.
Thunderbolt's biggest advantage is the amount of data bandwidth available via the standard, which up until USB4 was significantly higher than what USB could provide (as a standard it typically only allowed for data transfer). The USB-C hub or dock you decide to purchase would need to be Thunderbolt compatible to take advantage of this high bandwidth, but unless you are plugging in multiple 4K displays or requiring the bandwidth for some other high speed external device processing you don't necessarily need it.
If you're buying a new Macbook and want a docking station with Thunderbolt I'd recommend the CalDigit TS3 Thunderbolt dock from Apple. It works well, and has pretty much every port you would need (including a USB-C Thunderbolt option for an external device). Since the CalDigit dock is Thunderbolt enabled it supports power passthrough also, so the dock charges your Macbook when connected freeing up your Apple charger for portable use. Firewire is going to be a long shot on modern docks (I can't even find one, but maybe someone else in this thread has a better answer). I'd probably opt to get an adapter to USB-A or C if you can. The CalDigit TS3 also allows you to connect in your older 2012 Macbook Pro using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter. You can find a link from CalDigit on how to connect them here.
If you don't need the bandwidth of Thunderbolt then most USB-C hubs with a native DisplayPort....port.....will work, as long as that hub supports DisplayPort Alt mode. Anker on Amazon sells several, for example. Just look for M1 Macbook compatibility. Also, as a reminder, M1 Macbook Airs do not support dual extended display even if the dock has multiple video ports for displays available (barring some workaround stuff using DisplayLink).
Apologies if I overly or needlessly explained anything, I always just tend to lean into providing as much info as I can for these kinds of things. Hopefully this helps you in some way. If there's a specific need you are looking to address feel free to follow up and I can try and help further. Cheers!
It would be easier if the dock had a detachable cable, all TB2-TB3 adapters I know have a TB3 plug (not receptacle) like https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B01MQ26QIY and afaik there is no well-supported way to convert it without involving a TB "hub" (which defeats the purpose of reusing WD19TB). Shadier "female USB-C to female USB-C" adapters/cables may or may not work and are not really recommended on their own.
I also had some stability issues with TB3 docks and two 1920x1080 60Hz monitors - required multiple plugging and unplugging cycles to start working for both monitors. (e.g., CalDigit TS3+ and MacBook Pro Early 2015 13" via https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B01MQ26QIY and https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-cable-2-0-m/dp/B00WVDGZM6)
You could try https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B01MQ26QIY + https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-cable-2-0-m/dp/B00YHUBV6Q and connect monitors as described in https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000124312/dell-thunderbolt-dock-wd19tb-and-apple-usb-c-hosts#Dual_Monitor (2nd monitor has to go in TB3 port on WD19TB). I tried a similar setup on other docks, and it tends to work but is not very stable for 2nd monitor - had to plug/unplug quite a few times to make it work for both (Early 2015 MBP 13")
AFAIK - no, that port can work only as Thunderbolt 2 or miniDP (so you can connect an external monitor with a cheap miniDP to DP cable - DisplayPort 1.2 should work, dual 4K 60Hz is possible using both TB2/miniDP ports)
But if you buy Apple TB2-TB3 adapter https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQ26QIY and TB2 cable https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YHUBV6Q - you can connect some TB3 devices. It doesn't seem to support USB3 Type-C (even simpler SSDs, let alone DP Alt Mode devices like 40AS). In my experience, TB3 docks (both older Alpine Ridge and newer Titan Ridge) have a chance to work - I tried MBP early 2015 13" with CalDigit TS3+ and Plugable TBT3-UDZ and single 4K 60Hz + USB3 worked. So potentially there is a chance to make 40AC or 40AN work in the same way, but I didn't try those (let me know if you want me to try 40AN0135US or 40AC0135US). eGPU can also work with these machines with some hacks like https://github.com/mayankk2308/kryptonite. (I had an older version of the hack installed on MBP I was trying TB3 docks)
Thank you. Just so I'm clear:

I just got the official Apple one from Amazon. Aparently some third party ones can cause problems.
Hope you like dongles :-)
https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-USB-C-Adapter/dp/B01MQ26QIY
https://www.amazon.com/elago-FireWire-Adapter-MacBook-Computers/dp/B003L4P872
PS. I still doubt Sierra has support for AMD graphics in 2019 MBP, and without accelerated graphics this can cause lag, even in audio?!
yeah you're right. I had to change some of the exact products to work for Macbook.
So as of now, I'm running an Apple Thunderbolt 2 -- Thunderbolt 3 converter (because I have a 2015 macbook that has Thunderbolt 2). https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQ26QIY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
That will go into a Thunderbolt 3 -- Dual HDMI adapter that is made to work with Macbook. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075T9ZQH4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Then there will be two HDMI cords going from that adapter into both monitors.
The HooToo will just connect with a USB C connection directly to the laptop so that I have easier USB and SD card connections. So I'm not having to put stuff in and take stuff out of the Macbook itself all the time.
