Goldfish are not exactly great beginner fish in my opinion. Yes, they are cheap, easy to maintain and feed/ care for. However, they really should live in at least twenty five gallons. That's a fairly large tank for someone not sure how committed to the hobby they are. Something like this would be the bare minimum if you're asking me:
