This is what I use for my 10 gal but you can go with something smaller. Just search “low flow sponge filter for 5 gal”

I'm not sure. Where all the pump parts are is completely like sealed other than the water intake and out take. I tried rinsing it out with hot water too see if it'd help unclog anything in there.

I had that same filter running on a 5gal for a while and baffled it with pantyhose.

If you dont want to fiddle with the baffle, run both filters in the same tank for a month, then remove the old one.
