It went on pretty easily. It attaches to the existing roof rack. It probably took about 2-3 hours when all said and done. It really made a nice difference. I highly recommend.
Yeah, bolts would definitely be the way to go.
In terms of visualization, I suck at drafting otherwise I would have added an schematic to this post, but essentially imagine a universal car roof rack (like this one) but instead of the rack it's a pallet and instead of attaching to the bottom, the cross bars attach to the underside of the pallet's top (much like a fork left's tines). Also the attachment points to the cross bars would be semi permanent (I'd probably use butterfly bolts to secure the fasteners). When I want to take it off the car, I'd disconnect the cross bars and take the whole thing off as once piece.
I'd probably also reinforce the pallet to some extent. The main way pallets break, in my experience, is from lateral movement across the narrow side, so shoring up the joints against that kind of movement might be valuable.
Actually, typing all this out I'm reminded that there are one-piece injection molded plastic pallets. That might be worth looking into.
It seems like various Subaru dealers have them at different prices online. My local dealer has them set to about $160 So I would be getting them for free.
I mainly would like to haul firewood, shovel, awning and my huge tent in a basket on my roof. I was thinking of getting this basket from Amazon Arksen since it's length is adjustable
Its from amazon. I saw a guy in a parking lot with a sweet 3rd gen. He had this basket. He said it was sold on amazon as a "Bison Roof Basket". When i searched for it I found that they changed ownership or names etc, and now operate under "Arkensen roof basket". Its a 3 piece and really well put together. Also really fits the size of the roof proportionally as well
here is the link.
Very solid buy and also qualifies for amazon prime which is nice :)
I bought it here but at the time it was around 130. I do like it. I would't carry really heavy items but for the price it gets the job done. The hardware should be upgraded as well since it rusts easily.

From my understanding Bison, Curt and Arksen are all the same rack with different branding. I found a Arksen on eBay and received a brandless rack.

I have this and it works fine. It needed to be sprayed with waterproofing paint.
This is the rack on amazon. Looks great and is really sturdy
Thanks! The rack is just a random one I found on amazon a couple years ago. It’s not too strong but I still like it lol https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013COCXDC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_3FQ8EbRXES0FJ

Edit: Nice looking Trailhawk!
Sure. The basket itself is a Chinese knockoff from Amazon called an "Arksen" but the problem is that the basket is designed to attach to crossbars, which are far too far apart on the Congo Cage, plus the tubing is too wide to accept the baskets OEM brackets. So, after a few false starts, but largely thinks to some ideas of some other folks on Reddit, I came up with the idea to use half-slot B-channel unistrut from Home Depot. Cost me $14. Attaching the unistruts to the cage was the tricky part. The cage part was made by Kargo Master and was called a "Congo Cage". Bought it off Craigslist for $200. That product line has since been sold to Metalcloak, but they no longer make the adapters for crossbars. But, I found the perfect adapters. I found 2" tubing scaffolding clamps with threaded stud adapters. It's like they were made for for what I needed.
Note: After reading the comments regarding the basket, after assembly, I painted the whole thing with two coats of bedliner then silicone sealed every joint. For $150, it's not perfect but it'll do what I need it to do.
No, unfortunately I went a bit cheaper. It's this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B013COCXDC/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01__o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
