There are 5 xfinity router selling on ebay everyday and people in this forum talk about selling routers on every haul thread. That was my research.
This post is going to help people and I'm content with that. If I had run into one like it, I would never have purchased the router. Your response may have been in good faith but it reads like one long beratement.
On top of berating me, you are also spreading untrue information. You can buy an xfinity modem, look:
ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 Residential Gateway with 802.11n/ 4 GigaPort Router/ 2-Voice Lines Certified with Comcast (TG862G-CT) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NR1EHP8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_GWDFzb4C0YM73
I can be sour if I want to be sour, there's nothing wrong with that, I already got over it.
Also if you look at the other items I sell you'll see that I have a lot of experience in this business, just not with routers.
Why all the different vpns? Why use your schools vpn for research? Have you disabled WAN on the linksys and connected it to the LAN port (do not use WAN port)? If you like VPN you could do it router-side and everything on the network could use it all the time. My entire network uses VPN and plex works fine from inside the network. I currently have all my external ports closed so I haven't tested remote access.
Also, you should definitely have full control over the comcast router. Actually the best advice I could give you is to buy your own equipment and stop renting. If you have comcast phone look into porting to google voice and get an obi device for home phone and buy a docsis 3.0 modem (sb6141 is $25 used on amazon and is a great modem). Even if you wanted to keep comcast phone you could still purchase the device you're using.

No it's not an actual mainframe, which wouldn't work well in my apartment and yes the modem from Comcast has an integrated router/switch so there are four ethernet ports in it. One of these is passed connected to a physical interface on the server that connects to a virtual switch that is connected to the Sophos VM.
I have the default Comcast router/modem combo.
I'm not sure if it reboots by itself. I'm hesitant to put the blame on the router because my other devices work fine, and this problem only started happening recently.
Not possible.
The only real option for a retail EMTA (with more than 4 channels) is the Arris TG862G.. and this, unfortunately is only 8 D/S channels, which only gets you up to the 150mbps plan.. Anything faster you will likely have to wait until the DOCSIS 3.1 is fully rolled out - I assume there will be at least one approved 3.1 EMTA available sometime in the distant future..
This is what you should get.
From my other comment avoid anything not sold directly from Amazon.
I never get these messages and I own my modem. I'm not a Comcast fan by any means and I am their customer only due to lack of a reasonable alternative for internet in my area.
My modem is almost a year old. ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 Residential Gateway with 802.11n
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NR1EHP8/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=
Arris TG862G Retail with eMTA support. This model is also leased to customers, so you must inform the agent when activating it's a retail model to avoid the system applying a lease charge.
I looked into this and I could never find a cheap compatible alternative that had telephone ports. I bundle Internet, TV and Phone. The rental fee is $10 per month.
Here's the gateway: http://www.amazon.com/Residential-Gateway-802-11n-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8
Actually you can buy a telephony modem from Amazon. This modem will work with Comcast, but you'll have to call to activate it. Be sure that they provision both the voice and data, and stress that you purchased it, not a lease.

not really sure how to explain it, i guess all i can say is that that's how our service provider chooses to provide voice service, is via the isp provided modem/router combo device (which is a dual modem, both data AND voice, all the 3rd party modems i can find seem to be data only)
of course, being my service provider is comcast/xfinity (for both voice and internet) i suppose it's not all that surprising that they'd make it so that you can only get voice modem from them
if your wondering what the isp provided one is:
almost the exact same model i use, except we rent ours from comcast
Hi there! Slow speeds are not ideal but I'm here to provide some additional tips.
Is this your router from Comcast? http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-Residential-Gateway-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436997171&sr=8-1&keywords=xfinity+routers
The router above will only use 2.4ghz. You want yourself a dual band router if you live in an apartment complex or highly populated area. A 2.4ghz wireless network is like driving on a Monday during rush hour traffic, very slow and not ideal. A dual band router offers a 5ghz broadcast which is like driving on a Sunday with no traffic which equals much faster speeds.
Although a 5ghz wireless network offers a much better internet connection speed, it does lack distance and most importantly some devices do not support 5ghz. You can split your network, to broadcast a 2.4 and 5ghz wireless network name. The best method is to make the 2.4ghz your regular network name and the 5ghz network your network name with a 5G at the end.
1st: Find out if you have a dual band router from your ISP. If you do: split your network name, call their tech support for help or respond back with the exact model router you do have. If you do not have a dual band router, buy a dual band router or see if your ISP offers one.
LMK if this helps! :)

I have this for sale if you're needing a comcast modem.
FYI I think this is my modem/router (or VERY close)
So what's going on here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NR1EHP8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_GWDFzb4C0YM73
I'm legitimately curious.
Ooops. Im not 100% sure but im think im paying 10 bucks a month for this one. https://www.amazon.com/Residential-Gateway-802-11n-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8. Do you have any recommendation for replacement?
Yes, you can purchase your own modem/router but there are only a few models in existence that offer the voice service.
Here is one -> https://www.amazon.com/Residential-Gateway-802-11n-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8
Also if you go here -> https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com and put in your zip code (and select an internet speed), then select "Voice/Telephone Enabled" it should show a list of compatible modems as well.
The 2 it returned in my area were this -> https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com/device/arris-tg862g-421 (equivalent to the first link I posted) and this -> https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com/device/arris-tm722g-405
https://www.amazon.com/Residential-Gateway-802-11n-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8
You can put it into bridge mode & use your own router only downside is price.
A modem I got from comcast called ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 TG862G-CT.
https://www.amazon.com/Residential-Gateway-802-11n-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8
used for 86 on amazon.
This one should work on Amazon
Its this comcast router:
http://www.amazon.com/Residential-Gateway-802-11n-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8
ARRIS DOCSIS 3.0 Residential Gateway with 802.11n/ 4 GigaPort Router/ 2-Voice Lines for Comcast (TG862G-CT) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NR1EHP8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_tRWzwbEE88CWE
Just received it a few months ago never had any network issues.
Look a bit more carefully. There's quite a few on that list. Here's a random one I picked. I'm sure there's a bunch that are better fits and cheaper.
http://mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/device.php?devid=421
Which is here on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NR1EHP8/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=
I suggest buying used since it's significantly cheaper.
Some advice for Comcast customers:
Ok, their customer service blows. It is really quite terrible. However, they do have a chat service now that I have used instead of calling and waiting on hold, which has made it much easier.
For their internet, I discovered that it really isn't bad, its just that they give out terrible parts. The Motorola Arris router/modem that they rent out is absolutely fucking horrible. I pay for 105mbps, and I was getting 120mbps plugged in, maybe 50mpbs next to the router, and maybe 5mbps on the second floor of my apartment, where my PC is.
After discovering the source of the problem, I dropped $120 on a nice ASUS router that was on sale, and my connection jumped up to around 100mbps next to the router using my laptop, and about 20-40mbps on the second floor with my PC, about 80mbps on my cell phone on the second floor.
Again, I found out the source of my problem was my wireless card. I had a crappy $20 card from Rosewill that was fine for the price, but just wasn't working out for me.
I upgraded my wireless card to a nice ASUS one (I love ASUS stuff, generally very good) and my internet speed on my desktop is now between 120mbps and 150mbps.
Somehow, I get better speed on the second floor using wireless than plugged into my modem. I... can't really explain that.
So... if you are a Comcast customer and not satisfied with your wireless, make sure you aren't using the Motorola Arris modem/router. If you are, buy yourself a new router and plug the modem into it. Test your speed on different devices in different locations, and consider upgrading your wireless card to something with multiple antennas if you are on a different floor or have lots of walls between you and your router.
We pay about $80 a month for 105mbps internet plus cable. Cable was kind of just thrown in, but doesn't actually work and I don't feel like waiting all day for a Comcast guy to not show up to fix it. Whatever, we don't watch TV. But our internet is honestly great now.
Edit: TL;DR Comcast's internet service is generally pretty good, its the equipment they give you that blows.
Looking up the TG862 on Arris' website gives me this. That's clearly not what you have.
What you have is the Arris TG862G-TC, and I'm finding conflicting information on whether it supports dual band or not, probably not from what I can tell.
You can apparently tell by reconfiguring the wireless in the web interface, it should say something about 5 GHz.
I'd still suggest buying a better router (at least) and modem. If you replace the modem, you won't be able to use Comcast's phone service (and you shouldn't anyway).
> Also are you using 2.4ghz or 5ghz?
I'm not sure how to determine that. I have this router: http://www.amazon.com/Residential-Gateway-802-11n-GigaPort-TG862G-CT/dp/B00NR1EHP8
All of the other wifi signals are locked.
The reason why I think it may be the wifi range is just because moving it 5 feet over into the center of the room so it's ~10 feet away from the router (through a wall) makes it work fine.
