Something like that would work fine. You can use the Cheshire at night, but you have to provide some light to be able to see it's reflection in the eyepiece. The star test would just work at night. So you can use the Cheshire before sunset and verify with the star test if it's too late to easily use the cheshire. Like I said, you shouldn't have to be constantly adjusting collimation. If it looks good, it is good.
