This Asus laptop is $350 new or $260 used on Amazon. It is at the higher end of your budget, so it may be much. Unless you know that you won't be downloading any applications, I would recommend a windows laptop over a Chromebook. This laptop has an i3, 4Gb of ram, 1080p scree, 15in. My robotics team got this laptop last year and it works great for what we need it for, programming.

An i3 or i5 processor would be more than enought. And with the amount of cloud storage available, a high HD isn't necessary. I'd go for 4gb of RAM or higher, though.

I usually recommend the HP that Orangematz mentioned for those who look for under 500 but not for gamers or photo editing, for photo editing I would recommend this Asus-F555LA only because it has 70% sRGB color reproduction, it comes at a much lower price, but the specs are low as well so I would at least upgrade the ram if you decide to buy it.
It's funny you mention this because I just spent the past couple days researching a good everyday laptop for me to buy. If you're stuck down in that budget, I'd At least try to scrounge for this <strong>Asus F555LA</strong> so you get a full HD display and an i3 processor. Any less and you lose the display and move down into the Pentium/Celeron range.

If you could go $19 over your budget, you could go for this Asus F555LA-AB31 which would be a brilliant choice for daddy. Nice power, decent build quality and of course, a nice battery life.

+1 for buying a laptop, but don't buy a Mac. For example, I just got this Asus for $369, and then got an 8GB RAM stick and a 256GB SATA III SSD drive for $100. So for $500 I got a brand new computer with more RAM, a better processor, and a larger screen than the $1,200 Mac Air 13" (the one with the 256 SSD upgrade).
So I'd say buy a cheap Asus/Acer/whatever for $300-$400, and then upgrade to an SSD when you have the money. They are <$100, are a huge upgrade in performance, and come with the software to mirror your drive (you just need a $10 USB -> SATA cable).
And if you buy used you can do all this for $200 or so less. As noted already Window 10 is a free upgrade from 7 and 8, so do this before that ends in June.

That would make quite a bit of difference in terms of how much code you can see on the screen and how clear your videos are. The 1366x768 resolution on the choices provided is pretty limiting.
Between the two that you linked, though, the first one is better due to having a newer CPU with better integrated graphics. The 6th gen Skylake processors have hit the market now and the second laptop (Asus X555LA) has a 4th gen haswell processor.

Before I built a desktop I wanted to get a laptop, and I was looking at Asus'.
Check this one out.
Currently using Asus F555L and have had it for 7 months without any problems.
My previous laptop was a Toshiba Satellite that would heat up in the little armrest area, the hard drive would take a while to finish booting up, connection would randomly drop sometimes and adding RAM required opening the whole thing up.
The Asus doesn't heat up in the arm rest (sticker brags about some cooling system it has), the hard drive boots up faster (after signing in and checking the task manager it isn't greater than 90% or in the red), connection is stronger and doesn't drop anywhere near as much as the Toshiba (different WiFi cards) and it has a convenient latch on the back with 1 screw on it that can be removed and has a little slot to add a stick of RAM.
I've also read that MSI, Asus and some other brand (can't remember right now) allow for more laptop modifications while Toshiba, HP, Lenovo tend to whitelist parts which won't let you change them.
I can't vouch for other notebook models but the one I have is great for everyday use and hasn't had any problems.

If you want to be doing decent video editing you need to up your budget. Video editing requires a GPU and you cannot get a laptop with a dedicated GPU at sub-$400
If you are just doing Windows Movie maker stuff this will be perfect on your budget, but will not be able to do much more.
Also you can't increase RAM with a USB Drive. That's not how that works.
This isn't really in your price range but I'd say it's worth the extra. I know there's tons of Chromebooks in your price range. I'm no laptop expert though, so I would probably wait and see if anyone else can help. If you have any local resell or pawn shops I'd check them out.

That being said, from a financial perspective, the nephew is better off buying a $300 laptop. It's difficult to build a desktop with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, for $300.

Either way, I hope the kid is happy with whatever decision he makes and proud of himself for working towards a goal. I don't know what exactly a 10 year old can do to make money, but I imagine it has something to do with skipping a lot of school lunches.
I would go with the Vostro simply because if all you are doing is programming then There really isn't need for a better processor. Ubuntu will run on that perfectly and the only thing I would really reccomend is upgrading RAM and maybe SSD in the future which after reading your post I'm sure you can handle.
Edit: Assuming this is availbe in your country you may want to check it out. It has the 1080p screen at your price point.

Hopefully I record more MAHVEL, because I want my channel to mainly focus on MAHVEL, but to I don't want to ask people to record matches, I don't like begging people to ask to record them. But less and less time I can't find ANYONE decent playing in lobbies(because good players stick to player matches or avoid online altogether) so I have to ask to record more and more often, which is something I don't like to bother people with at all.
But, if it comes down to it, that is what I have to do.
Also, I got Bloodborne and beaten it already(but found out I didn't get the true ending) so I still have to replay it to get the real ending.

For the stuff you're doing I would suggest this.
I have a Celeron N2830 based machine and while it gets normal tasks done, LoL lags at about 20-30FPS on low settings and Counter-Strike Source also lags some.
This should provide decent performance in running all the above apps with this price, but the weight and size might be a little larger than what you expect

I did. It shows airplane mode is off and wireless communication is allowed but no wireless things of any kind are there, like networks or adapters under the network settings or anything like that.

For League.... you will not want something Baytrail. I have a Celeron N2830 based machine, had to turn down the settings by a lot.

Seconded for the ASUS F555LA-AB31 recommended by Orangematz.
Both of the laptops you're looking at, regardless of the CPU (which isn't a spec you need to worry about with your use), come with very poor displays that have 1366x768 resolution in the 15.6" size. Such a low resolution doesn't let you fit much onscreen, and in this size of display it can make things onscreen larger than most people need.
A lot of laptops, even cheap ones like this ASUS, are moving to decent-resolution displays (i.e. 1920x1080 in 15.6"), but the two laptops you're looking at don't have decent-resolution displays. Display resolution can have a huge effect on the usability of your laptop, so pay attention to it before you worry about things you don't need to worry about (like the CPU!)

If you can spend $350, this is the laptop I would get:
It's nearly identical to the Asus you posted, but is significantly better for only a little bit more money in two ways:
1) The processor and integrated graphics are newer and faster in this unit than in either of the ones you posted, by a decent amount. Minecraft would be very playable on this machine, and only rarely would you get drops below 30 fps, though he would have to lower the game settings quite a bit to achieve this.
2) The screen is full HD 1080p (a rarity in this price range), unlike the units that you posted which are 720p. 1080p looks significantly nice for gaming, watching videos, and pretty much anything else you can do with a computer.
I used to have a Asus laptop with identical specs to the one you posted and while it would play minecraft sufficiently well, frame rates hovered around 40 fps and on popular servers like Mineplex drops below 30 or even 20 were not uncommon on very low settings, making some mini games frustrating to play.
The unit I posted would not have this issue, I strongly recommend it.
That being said, if $350 is out of your price range, then get the Lenovo.
This Asus is about the same price and is a much better buy. It has a full 1920x1080 screen resolution, a faster processsor, better integrated graphics.
Hopefully the extra $20 wont be too much more, but honestly for $20 you are getting a significant amount of a performance boost.
Otherwise I would look around more, even for $330 that laptop isnt very special. I would look for a refurbished/used laptop for around $250, if you go below $300 for a new laptop you are going to find alot of horrible computers that will not be worth the money.
I don' think its a good buy, I am not all that familiar with the UK Market, but it appears a little overpriced. It has a very small amount of RAM and a very cramped amount of storage (You will only have about 14GB of usable space).

I know its on the United States Amazon, but you should be able to find it on your favorite UK retailer. It has double the RAM (4GB) a full HD screen and a 500GB Hard Drive.
To be frank, AU$ 500 won't really net you an i7, not even an i5. If you're willing to go with an i3, you can get something quite good. But I think it's due to the Cyber Monday or something deals going on in the US. I'm not sure about it on Australia. Anyway, for good subjective performance, actually what's important is the RAM and SSD. An i3 can even handle 4k videos and office multitasking just fine. Lack of those 2 makes things slow.

It seems like the tradeoff is more RAM and an i5 rather than the i3, for about $100 more. Now, the use of this laptop will be schoolwork and browsing mostly, probably a picture dump too. does the better processor apply at all?
I also noticed a guy in the comments recommended straight away to upgrade RAM with additional 8GB and replace the 500GB 5400 RPM hard drive with a 250GB SSD drive and relegate the 500GB to an external. This brings it to 12 GB, with 250GB SSD for around the same price as the Aspire you linked, but the processor would still be inferior.
This is the best advice. Be like a business man and an artist. The best teacher is direct feedback from customers (the crowd) and experience. Just produce produce produce.

You'll have to define "good" battery life. At your price point, I'd mark that as 3-4 hours. Personally, I'd go for something with lower resolution and just output to a 1080p monitor though I will stick to 1080p for my suggestion.

No that's not how it works at all. You have to count ipc and power consumption. Where the i3 excels in. Also most tasks are single threaded anyways. The i3 performs way better with its much higher ipc by over 40% in a lot of tasks. Never judge a cpu by the number of cores it has unless it is the exact same architecture. It has integrated graphics wich means it wont be pushing max detail 60 fps, but it should run League ok. the real selling point is a 1080p IPS screen wich is almost impossible to find under 500$. nearly every other laptop at this price has 720p screens with TN (not as good colors).
If you want to really improve the laptop, buy a RAM module and SSD.
Any SSD 240-512gb will be a major improvement over the built in HDD.
Can you spend a bit more? Microsoft offers this Asus EeeBook E403SA-US21 for $539 with the student discount. Huge plus on this laptop is the SSD and the 1080p display.
Otherwise I would suggest this Asus F555LA. Pretty decent specs for a laptop under $500.

I know it's over budget, but this Asus F555LA is worth the extra investment if at all possible.l
It has a full HD 15.6" 1920x1080 display for much less than you'd find that feature elsewhere. That would do a lot of good for browsing and writing. The higher resolution is much easier on the eyes, but even more importantly, it'd provide a lot of display real estate to see a lot more at once.
If that isn't doable, and you just need something with a lot of battery life for cheap, the HP Stream 13 would be a good option.

I'm in America, so I don't know about how shipping and everything would work in the EU, but this laptop might suit your needs. It's FHD and has a numpad, but it only has 4GB of RAM and may not be able to withstand a TON of drops, since it is a lower-end PC.
If you want something more portable, you could get this Lenovo Thinkpad, which also has a FHD display and a numpad, but is a bit more expensive, especially if the corporate discount that I linked you, the password to which is FLEN*2V, doesn't work in the EU.

I dont think you can find anything decent below 800$ not being intel HD. Not intel HD = nvidia 940, which will eat battery and heat. I would advice checking Dell inspiron 5000 series, both 17 and 15 inch screens. I use a Surface when I need to run an RTL dongle of a tablet, but for general use, I use this laptop, which is pretty good for the price.

With a budget of $300 I would recommend you get a second hand machine. At least that way you will be getting a mid class machine with a good screen and maybe even an SSD. The latter is the single most important component, especially if you are coding. Opening and closing text editors, launching browser windows is something I do repeatedly throughout the day and an HDD-only system would drive me crazy.

You will have treat laptops in this price category with more care. The build quality isn't great.
As for suggestions, take a look at the Asus F555LA-AB31:

It will run Sims and Minecraft, but you will have to lower the settings. I would also recommend to upgrade the RAM with another 4GB module (will cost you another $20). This will also increase the performance while gaming.

I don't think that you can get something in Japan that could play Rocket League decently for $300. Japan is kinda expensive for electronic stuff.

No. It's just overpriced crap. Stay away from laptops with an Intel Celeron/Pentium Nxxxx CPU. These are not more worth than 300 bucks and depending on what you're doing in Visual Studio, they will be ... not up to the task.
Try to find something with at least an Intel i3 or i5. If you want something new take a look at these:

Nor really ... if you just want to spend around 300 bucks on a laptop, then take a look at this Asus F555LA-AB31, You would get at least a laptop with a 1920x1080p display. Though I would recommend to upgrade it with another RAM module.
Personally I would try to get something lighter. Hauling around a laptop with a weight of over 5 lbs (with the power supply) every day back and forth between school and home isn't fun. The HP Pavilion x360 13-s199nr would be a decent compromise, but you will have to spend all of your budget for it:
- 13.3 inch, 1920x1080p IPS touchscreen
- Intel i5-6200U + 6 GB of RAM
- 500 GB HDD
- Intel HD 520 graphics

The Asus F555LA is one of the better choices under $500. Surprisingly good screen (really, it was only a few years ago that 1080p hardly showed up below $800), and will be fine for your usage. Don't expect amazing performance in WoW or other games, though.
Alternatively, the Acer E5-573G is right at $500. It also has a 1080p screen, but combines it with an entry level dedicated GPU. It won't run demanding games very well, but will be great for WoW.

How important are solid state drives Well they are not nessessary, but they make your computer much faster. Normal tasks (opening documents, general use, launching programs, etc.) are much faster. They use less power, last longer, and are 100% quiet. The only downside is that they are far more expensive (128GB SSD usually costs about as much as a 1 TB Hard Drive)
What's the difference between an i3 and i7 Well there's one more stage there, the i5. The i3 is for low-power, but also low-cost. The i5 is the mainstream processor for higher power, but also a higher cost. The i7 is the power processor. It has the most amount of power and the highest cost. An i5 is more powerful than an i3 and an i7 is more powerful than an i5. There is a bit more two it, but that's all the jist of it.
Here are two laptops that I would reccomend for an entry level user.

2nd one is a Core i5 6th gen, but I bet the Core i3 5th Gen Asus can run it too. Might not be at amazing settings but its not a demanding game. I'm sure Intel 5500 and definitely the new Intel 530 can run it.

Newer laptops coming out with an Intel 6000 (Skylake) series CPU could be pretty great at running WoW, at least outside of large raids. Improved internal GPUs keep it on the cheaper side with pretty great performance considering.

strangely, laptops are really hard to pick as chromebooks, ultrabooks, and outdated hardware with similar prices are sandwiched in. those are crap.
there also are a lot of laptops that are poorly designed and don't last and you don't want a discrete graphic card either since it add unnecessary heat
so I suggest getting the Asus F555LA-AB31 15.6-Inch Laptop
only $340 and the specs are great. the i3 come with HT so the cpu is not that far off to a i5 for performance. I strongly recommend getting those upgrades parts for it to save money:

the only con is that it come with windows 10 and cannot be downgraded unless you're okay with no wi-fi. (no such drivers work)

here is a good college laptop At $350 shipped, it's essentially a $300 laptop with specs appropriate to the price and a $50 full-HD 1080p screen. Maybe the market is moving to HD at this price point, but I doubt there are many systems out there with these specs/screen at this price.
