Dude i came here to ask about my faulty monitor and seen this post immediately.
I have a VG279Q1A and like 3 months ago at 165 hertz the screen was flickering. I changed the refresh rate to 144 and it went away for like a week. Flickering came back. Same thing with 120, im at 60 hertz rn and its not flickering. Wondering if anyone knows if its fixable, cant return it.

I bought this one for about $250 back in March. Its a 27 inch 144hz 1080p monitor. I have a 1660 ti and it works perfectly for my setup. I made the jump from an old acer monitor and it was night and day. They have a few models in 24 inches as well if 27 inches is too big for you and bigger if need be
For under $300 you'll be limited to a 1080p monitor, this is the best one for your money I feel.

I have the 1440p version for my series X, for 1080p this one should do the job fine on the S. But I'm not sure what your budget is...the thing is a lot of people bought cheap ones that don't do 120fps even though on the box it says it does.
You can go 144 Hz no problem. There are many options. Something like this would be good:
I would recommend something like this.
This is a great monitor for the Series S....
I have the 1440p version for the Series X, I don't really use the VRR but it has it. I don't find that I need the VRR if I just lock it to 60fps or 120fps.
All hail the broke boys. What monitor did you get?
If you're interested in what I got, here's a link.
I have the 1440p version for the series x, runs great. This will hit 120fps and 1080p on the S
If you can afford it and are fine with 1080p, this one is great. I have the 1440p version for the X.
This is the best bang for your buck. Might be cheaper in the UK

Is it worth the extra $130 over this as a secondary display? I’ve hears lots of good things about this monitor but I’m not sure it’s worth the extra cash.
