The laptop you linked has a whole bunch of bad features. 768p display which isn’t going to look good at all (1080p is a minimum!), outdated CPU, and no SSD. The laptop I recommend is a bit more expensive but still below your budget.
I recommend this ASUS Vivobook, which has the 4-core i7-8550U processor, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD, 1080p display, and MX150 graphics card. It weighs 3.2lbs and has a battery life of 7-8 hours. The Amazon reviews are overall very positive. It has a strong, back lit keyboard. This CPU can handle a lot of Chrome tabs. This low-end graphics card will be able to run the games you listed very well.
Hey,
how about the <strong>ASUS Vivobook S410UN?</strong> According to an Amazon review, it has a matte display. It has:
i7-8550U 4-core processor
8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD storage
1080p 14" display
MX150 2 GB graphics card
Weight of 3.2lbs and battery life up to 8 hours
The laptop runs Windows 10 Home. It has a free SODIMM slot for more RAM. The MX150 graphics card should be fine for playing some Fortnite.
A 13" laptop near your budget would not cut it as a gaming laptop as they don't carry dedicated graphics. You would have to step up to at least a 14" model and get the <strong>ASUS VivoBook S</strong> that has an mx150 GPU. Having a dedicated GPU makes a huge difference when gaming. Without a dedicated GPU you will spend hours tweaking and searching for software like lowspecexperience to get most decent games to load
This Asus VivoBook would also be able to do the job , but I prefer the MSI's build quality and design. Nevertheless, the Asus is a good pick at a lower cost.
I ended up going ordering this an hour ago, still can cancel though:
But the Nitro 5 seems to fit the bill although a little bulky and looks like a gaming laptop (since it is)...hmm..
Hi,
I would also agree that an i7 and 16 GB of RAM is a bit out of your range, but as another option there is the <strong>ASUS Vivobook S410UN</strong>, which has:
i7-8550U 4-core processor
8 GB of RAM (upgradeable)
256 GB SSD storage (upgradeable)
1080p 14" display
MX150 2 GB graphics card
Weight of 3.2lbs and battery life up to 8 hours
This laptop runs Windows 10 Home.
The specifications, weight, and battery life are all decently fair. Battery life could be better, as well as thermal management, but it is still a bit of a budget laptop.
The laptop should be able to handle the programs you've listed. If you want more RAM, the option is available to upgrade.
It has a fingerprint reader. Build quality is okay, not the best but its okay for the price range.
You do not have to change your budget and if you are willing to use an external drive for extra space the <strong>ASUS VivoBook S</strong> Thin & Light Laptop can save you some money. The MX150 graphics card will handle Dota 2 well so you will have no issues when gaming. It has a good build quality and there are not too many complaints about this laptop. Unfortunately it does not have the storage space that you want
Id suggest you pick up something like this <strong>ASUS VivoBook S</strong> which is pretty light weight and will manage manage all those tasks you intend to use it for.
A bit over budget, there is the <strong>ASUS Vivobook S410UN</strong>, which has upgradable RAM and storage. But, users have reported a lot of keyboard flex which you may dislike.
I would recommend this ASUS VivoBook S it is on 90$ off right now.
The frame is all metal, and well constructed, the hinge is well-designed and the lid is slender so it feels very premium with minimal screen flex.
Ports wise you get 1 USB type C, 1 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2, 1 port for the mic/headphone, and HDMI, and SD slot.
Keyboard is chiclet style and the size of the keys are good, and they have good travel distance without feeling squashy, but there is a little flex at the center of it, and backlit has 3 stages of brightness.
Touchpad is big, but for some not big enough, but it also doesn't play well with multi-touch gestures.
Windows Hello also isn’t fully supported.
65% of the sRGB gamut was covered, with results of 47% and 49% for the NTSC and Adobe RGB ranges, So this might not be the best option if you need high color coverage.
Screen is bright enough for outdoor usage, so no complaints there.
Speakers are beneath the frame, so most audio/music wil be a little miffled. , but it gets loud enough for you to hear a movie/video clearly even with some noise around you.
Battery life is around 5-6 hours with moderate to heavy usage.
Looks like I can shave off half a pound with this guy and have the same specs. Is it accurate that it would perform the same if I'm fine with the smaller screen? I'm seeing same specs and it looks like same type of build as well, other than a 1TB HDD which I'm also fine without.
The <strong>ASUS VivoBook S</strong> will do a good job at those tasks you mentioned and it tics all your boxes.
For a light and fast laptop that is capable of light gaming, id suggest you get this <strong>ASUS VivoBook S Thin & Light Laptop</strong>
I would recommend this VivoBook S Because it comes with everything you need and it is future profed well since it supports TB3, and it has the almost perfect balance between weight, battery life, and value for money.
Then I think the <strong>ASUS Vivobook S410UN</strong> would be a decent fit, but I wouldn't expect perfect thermal performance for a laptop in this range that is still light. Anyhow, the MX150 should be able to run the games you listed fine. It will also be fine for college/school use.
Hey,
I would recommend the <strong>ASUS Vivobook S410UN</strong> which has an i7 processor and MX150 graphics card. It is decently light device. It should be great for Photoshop and some video editing. Battery life is decent as well.
Hello, for about $800 you can get the -> ASUS VivoBook S. - Latest 8th gen Core i7-8550U - 8GB RAM - 256GB SSD - GeForce MX150 - 14" FHD NanoEdge Display - Backlit Keyboard - Finger Print Sensor
It is thin and light (3.2 pounds) and the battery will last about 7 hours on normal usage. The dedicated GPU is a plus as it will aid when doing 3D modelling. Best is to check it out at your local stores and see if it works for you. Good luck!
thank for the reply, the swift3 look really nice
I also found <strong>this one</strong>, but looks kinda similar to the swift 3, can u help me with the difference between both apart from the weight?
I would recommend this ASUS VivoBook S because it comes with everything you need, i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in your budget and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading,Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, long battery life, Mx 150 GPU high settings with very good FPs, and it is within your budget.
Hello! Have you considered this ASUS Vivobook S410UN for $800? It has:
i7-8550U 4-core processor
MX150 2 GB graphics card
14" 1080p display
8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD
Weight of 3.2lbs and battery life up to 7 hours.
It is currently in stock and has very similar specs as the first Acer Swift 3 you linked.
I would recommend this ASUS VivoBook S because it comes with everything you need, i7 quad core CPU which is one of the best in your budget and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading,Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, long battery life, Mx 150 GPU that should be able to handle the games you mentioned on medium to high settings with very good FPs, and it is within your budget.
Then I think you can reach 8 GB of RAM easily.
How about the ASUS Vivobook S410UN for $800? It has:
i7-8550U 4-core processor
1080p 14" display
8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD
MX150 2 GB graphics card
Weight of 3.2lbs and battery life up to 7 hours
This laptop will be perfect for computer science. The dedicated graphics card will be great when testing programs. If you want a cheaper recommendation, let me know.
Sadly, I don't think you will find a laptop with 16 GB of RAM in this price range, I could only find fishing listings on Amazon of Dell "business" laptops. So I recommend you this ASUS Vivobook S410UN for $800, which has:
i7-8550U 4-core processor
8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD
1080p 14" display
MX150 2 GB graphics card
Weight of 3.2lbs and battery life up to 7 hours
This laptop has a processor with hyper threading which is very helpful in music production. Sadly, the screen is a bit smaller than your liking. I think 8 GB of RAM should be enough for music production, but I'm not sure how dependent music production is on RAM.

256 GB SSD

This laptop should be overall good for college use as well as light gaming. I searched online what graphics card is recommend for your game, people said GTX 1050 - GTX 1050 Ti. The graphics card I picked is a bit weaker, but if you're playing casually you can tune down settings for a better experience.
Hello!
I would recommend buying a laptop with a strong CPU and low end graphics card.

8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD

Sadly, does not have 16 GB of RAM, but you are able to add RAM yourself (one extra open slot). This will be great for your use: portable and powerful. The graphics card may be handy in the future for programming. It has a total of 4 USB ports available (2 3.0s, 2 2.0s).

actually looking for something cheaper since tax is not included, but i will add this into my options. I was hoping for something like this,ASUS VivoBook S, but the battery is terrible on it, or like the Swift 3 with upgradability.

Not sure what you mean by the trackpad.

You could add 1TB HDD to it for storage .
Hello! I can recommend you a light weight laptop that has a dedicated graphics card + strong CPU.
I recommend this ASUS Vivobook for $799, which has the 4-core i7-8550U processor, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB SSD, NanoEdge 1080p 14” display, and MX150 graphics card. It weighs a mere 3.2lbs and battery life is 7-8 hours. This processor + graphics card will achieve all of your needs very well, while staying very light. I don’t think you’ll get a student discount, but the price is already very fair.
If you're going to be carrying the laptop around and using it in a classroom environment, I do think a 15.6" six pound laptop is a bit large.
I know many people who deal with it and get by fine, but most say they wish they'd gotten something a bit smaller.
If you're fine with just a bit less GPU power, keep tabs on the $700 Vivobook S which has kept going in and out of stock over the last two hours. It has a CPU that is just as powerful and a much smaller form factor with a 14" display. It's GPU isn't as powerful, but is still dedicated and will be fine for moderate gaming / graphic work.
If you have any more questions feel free to ask!
I'm a senior in CS, and I can tell you that the only thing you really need is a good processor, ram, and for it to be lightweight. The processor and ram is for running heavy code in compilers. The faster your processor the faster the code will run. In addition it helps multi tasking apps easier if you have a bigger ram. As far as the weight, this is the most crucial. I bought a super awesome gaming laptop in 12' and I have brought it to school maybe 20 times? The reason is because it weighs ten pounds and absolutley KILLS my back walking with it. It's not just the weight of the laptop, but books and your bag. Plus your already going to be in bad posture all day, so the last thing you need is a bad back. I'm a body builder outside of school so it's not just that I'm weak in my back. It literally hurts. Go for around 3lb, at the max do 4.5.
I'm upgraded finally this fall, this is what I'm getting
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7VFTN9
Pros - It's i7 quad core and has extremely good speeds, up to 4ghz. It's very lightweight at 3lbs. The price is unbeatable at 800$. Also it's Asus.
Neutral - 8 GB of ram, it's not ideally the best but there isn't that much of a need for higher ram if your just in school. BUT it's neutral because it has an extra slot for ram from the reviews I read.
Bad - It has a lame SSD of 256gb of space. But unless you plan on having a library of illegal movies in there, then you can be fine. I mean you did say gpu didn't matter so it's probably not gonna need games from you stored. Plus all of my C++, Java, Lisps, and Logisim files hold less than 150mb of storage for the past 4 years. But this is also upgradable as well, or you can just get an external hard drive for like 40$.
Still it'll save you a ton of money and be perfect for now!

Smaller screen and lighter weight. Ryzen 2500u is an APU. Performance is about 10% less than an MX150. So you’re not sacrificing a lot of power and really that 10% difference is from Nvidia paying developers largely. The 2500u was designed to be comparable to the 8250u and MX150. It can play any AAA game at 720p medium-ish settings.
I’d be more likely to consider a 14” MX150 laptop as a competitor to the Dell. And the Acer Swift 3 is $80 more and uses DDR3 RAM instead of DDR4.
I think the next laptop to consider is this and it’s $200 more non-touch:
ASUS VivoBook S Thin & Light Laptop, 14" FHD, Intel Core i7-8550U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GeForce MX150, NanoEdge Display, Backlit Kbd, FP Sensor - S410UN-NS74 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fsojBbN0B3F69
What about this one: ASUS VivoBook S Thin & Light Laptop, 14" FHD, Intel Core i7-8550U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GeForce MX150, NanoEdge Display, Backlit Kbd, FP Sensor - S410UN-NS74 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_pVaoBbPASKBVX
The 13” laptops have a downclocked MX150. Avoid them.
The Swift 3 was $680 on Amazon for weeks. You may want to consider the Asus VivoBook as well. It’s similar but has an i7 instead of an i5.
ASUS VivoBook S Thin & Light Laptop, 14" FHD, Intel Core i7-8550U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GeForce MX150, NanoEdge Display, Backlit Kbd, FP Sensor - S410UN-NS74 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_R.CkBbG94GKNW
HP also just released a 13” Ryzen 2-in-1 laptop I’m curious about. But right now it’s too expensive at over $800. I think it should be $600 based on where the market is.
The downside is that even the i7 8550u can’t maintain above the performance of the an i5 7300hq. Not a big deal if you’re looking at a MX150, but apparently even a 1050 is wasted on it.

If you want to save money you can go with <strong>Acer Swift 3</strong> ($675 on Amazon with 16% OFF). It has good specifications, discrete graphics card, but the main downside - dim display.
It comes:
If you need a better build quality, and stronger processor, I would go with <strong>Asus VivoBook S 14"</strong> ($799 on Amazon)
It has:
https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i7-8550U-GeForce-NanoEdge-Display/dp/B07B7VFTN9

My personal laptop, prices will lower further into semester. If not aim for a pc with a ssd and gpu. You're mostly going to deal with matlab(kinda easy to run) and solidworks(harder to run but will run well with laptop). -3rd year ae major
Asus makes some nice ultrabooks, imo: ASUS VivoBook S
I'm not Canadian, so I don't know about pricing and availability there, but I'd go with this one. It's one of few with a discrete GPU for that price:
yes for sure Amazon.com
Huawei Matebook D would be first choice.
Second choice would be this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7VFTN9/
I would check this <strong>Asus Vivobook S14</strong> (with dedicated MX150 graphics card), its stylish, light-weight laptop with the right mix of specifications and price.
Pros
Cons
I think this one has the i7-7660U which is actually slower than the Vivobooks i7-8550U but is stylish, from Microsoft, longer battery life etc..
actually got the best CPU namely the i7-8750H with 6cores/12threads and GPU GTX 1050ti 4GB for around 800$. It states in the specs on amazon that it has 16GB of DDR4 RAM.
Edit1: some words
I would check this <strong>Asus Vivobook S14</strong> (with dedicated MX150 graphics card), its stylish, light-weight laptop with the right mix of specifications and price.
Pros
Cons
If you want not budget option, check this <strong>Asus Zenbook</strong> it has better build quality, but it comes with 8th gen i5 processor (<strong>S14</strong> has 8th gen i7).
lol then for your use, get this: https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i7-8550U-GeForce-NanoEdge-Display/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=asus+vivobook+mx150&qid=1556158950&s=electronics&sr=1-4
1000 dollars is too much for your needs. 8gb of ram and a mx150. should be fine with the i7, although if you need more processing power go with the acer aspire 7

I think I can upgrade it to 16GB RAM right? Will that be expensive and/or technically challenging? I've helped build parts of a desktop computer before but something about opening the back of a thin ass frail laptop scares me
fyi I ended up getting the Vivo S i7/8Gb/256 SSD/MX150 for $960 with Ebates.
I would check this <strong>Asus Vivobook S14</strong> (with dedicated MX150 graphics card), its stylish, light-weight laptop with the right mix of specifications and price.
Pros
Cons
If you want to spend all your budget, check <strong>Asus Zenbook</strong> it has better build quality, but it comes with 8th gen i5 processor (<strong>S14</strong> has 8th gen i7).
What is your budget? Did you check <strong>Asus Vivobook S14</strong> (with dedicated MX150 graphics card)? Its with 11% OFF right now. Its stylish, light-weight laptop with the right mix of specifications and price.
Pros
Cons
With the Black Friday sales underway. For $800 it is actually possible to purchase a laptop with a GTX 1060 to play games with. But it will look like a gaming laptop and will be rather big and heavy.
For a laptop that is relatively thin and light and does not look like a gaming laptop for $800, you definitely need to give up some performance to achieve that. The following 14" Asus Vivobook S S410UN-NS74 for $800 (not on sale) probably best fits what you are looking for.

It has a low voltage quad core i7-8550u CPU which can burst up to 4.0GHz. I say "burst" because this is a "u" model CPU with limited cooling so it can only burst up to 4.0GHz when it is cool enough to do so. However, sustained max speed would probably be around 2.7Gz to 3.0GHz simply due to thermal limitations.
The nVidia mx150 should be fine for EU4 since it is a 2013 game and one of the recommended GPU is the Radeon X1900; a high performance GPU from 2006. The nVidia mx150's performance is roughly between the previous generation nVidia GTX 950m and GTX 960m "entry level" gaming GPUs. The mx150 is considered to be just a "mainstream" GPU but it should be much more powerful than the old X1900 GPU. Currently the GTX 1050 is considered the "entry level" GPU which I believe is between the performance of the GTX 960m and GTX 965m. Click following link for more info about the mx150 and some game benchmarks.

Thin bezels around the screen makes this laptop pretty small; similar in size to a typical 13.3" laptop and at least according the specs listed at Amazon, it weighs in at 3.2lbs. The cover is aluminum, but the bottom half of the laptop is plastic. If you want a full aluminum chassis, then you need to increase your budget for a more "premium" laptop.

How about this ASUS Vivobook S410UN for $800 It has:
i7-8550U 4-core processor
8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD
1080p 14" display
MX150 2 GB graphics card
Battery life up to 7-8 hours, weight of 3.2lbs
This laptop will be great for college work and light gaming. This follows the specifications you were looking for (i7, 8 GB of RAM, graphics card).
Another option for cheaper would be this Acer Swift 3 for $700, which has very similar components but has a slower CPU (i5-8250U).
would the main difference between the envy and this be the battery life ?
ASUS VivoBook S Thin & Light Laptop, 14" FHD, Intel Core i7-8550U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GeForce MX150, NanoEdge Display, Backlit Kbd, FP Sensor - S410UN-NS74 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_neIwBb09A6694
Okay lol I’m so indecisive, I need to buy a laptop right but I’m stuck choosing among Dell
And ...
Which one would be the best recommendation in terms of performance for gaming and music production, having a good lifespan without deteriorating too much. I really like the look of the vivobook, seems to have a nice sleek size but I like the performance specs of the dell for gaming and the price as well. My budget is around $750 but I’m willing to budge to $800 depending on good recommendations. Any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Something that would have an dedicated GPU. Think you can look at some Asus models around 600-800 price range, you should get atleast 2GB GPU. Also make sure it has atleast SSD, not worth settling for less for that price tag. And personally i would recommend that it should have atleast i5 CPU. I wouldnt recommend taking any ryzens - they overheat too much. For example something modern, light and decent spec (i bought something similiar for my mother-in-law who loves to play age of mythology/empires and honestly it is far better than a $1200 HP Envy): https://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-i7-8550U-GeForce-NanoEdge-Display/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ref=sr_1_9?fst=as%3Aoff&qid=1554486665&refinements=p_36%3A50000-80000%2Cp_89%3AASUS&rnid=2528832011&s=computers-intl-ship&sr=1-9
Hi,
I think the main priorities are: slot for an extra HDD, decent build quality, and a dedicated graphics card. So, I would recommend the <strong>ASUS Vivobook S410UN</strong>, which does not have the best build quality but it is fair for the price range. It has:
i5-8250U 4-core processor
8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD storage
1080p 14" display
MX150 2 GB graphics card
Weight of 3.2lbs and battery life up to 8 hours
This laptop runs Windows 10 Home.
You should be fine running CAD programs and games on the low-end dedicated graphics card. Photo editing should be okay, but make sure to note that the display does not have excellent color accuracy. But for general use, it would be fine.
Sadly, this laptop does not give the opportunity for self-repair/upgrade, but you can upgrade the RAM and storage yourself.
Look at what the 2k macbook is packing
Heres the first pc laptop i found that has an i7 for less than half the price https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B7VFTN9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hGaDBb703S0QS
If you search amazon for laptops with the macbook's i5 and a similar gpu and the same ram and ssd, it will be even less than this one
Since you're only doing light gaming, I think an MX150 would be just right for you.
How about the ASUS Vivobook S410UN for $800? It has:
i7-8550U 4-core processor
8 GB of RAM
256 GB SSD
1080p 14" display
MX150 2 GB graphics card
Weight of 3.2lbs and battery life up to 7 hours
This laptop will be great for general use as you listed. Office, iTunes, Netflix, and photo editing should all be no issue. It is decently slim and light.
Anyone else having issues adding the ASUS Vivobook to cart?
