Not sure about metal specifically, but in general I can't recommend the Audio Technica ATH-M40x's enough. Some of the most commonly praised headphones are the M50x's, and the M40's are very similar. The specs are listed on that Amazon link, but basically the range sounds practically identical to a casual listener so there's no need to worry about a loss of frequency response unless you're looking to do some professional mixing. They're also lighter than the M50's so they're more comfortable to wear.
I listen to a fairly wide variety of music, metal included, and I'll tell you that the M40's are a very good value for only being $100. Do your own research and get plenty of opinions, but the M40's are a very good option for the price.
Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x are $115 on Amazon right now. I didn't want to make a thread because they're usually like $130 but now they're $115. https://www.amazon.ca/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/166-7182757-1994246?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAJ7T5BOVUVRD
Just fyi, the ATH-M40x is currently on sale on amazon. I think they've gone lower once(?) but this is a pretty good sale.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HVLUR54/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Right now they are going for $80 brand new
Edit:
$86 shipped my point is for an extra $16 you get a brand new pair (no scratches), one day shipping, and if you end up not liking them you have amazon prime's return policy as well and the manufacturer warranty if something does break. IMO that's well worth the $16
Found them for quite a bit cheaper without the headphone amp included.
You should upgrade. I bought the Audio-Technica ATH-M40X headphones ($67) a few months ago. I've been listening to my entire music collection over again because there is such a huge difference between those and the standard iPhone buds that it feels like I'm hearing the songs for the first time again
Check this out. You will also need a set of ear pads (the ones it comes with are shit)

I’m gonna go against the fray hear and recommend investing in good audio for headsets. The ATH-M40X It costs roughly the same as a “gaming headset” whilst also offering better sound design. You can also add the mic for an additional $30. Or if you have the money invest into the ATH-M50x. As for controllers, I would definitely recommend the elite controller if possible. Otherwise, a standard Xbox controller will do you good.
hey, try going for the audio technica m40x. they are worth the price. altho they are monitoring headphones they are great for gaming and music as well. they arent bluetooth but they have removable wires. approx cost is 9k
I use the Audio-Technica M40X headphones. Very clean sound, padded and goes over the ears. The headband is slightly padded, and doesn't irritate after a head shave. I wear them for gaming and watching movies. Can keep them on comfortably for a few hours before your ears start to sweat. 😎
One of the ones I'm considering is this Amazon.com: Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Professional Studio Monitor Headphone, Black, with Cutting Edge Engineering, 90 Degree Swiveling Earcups, Pro-grade Earpads/Headband, Detachable Cables Included: Musical Instruments Any thoughts? Better alternatives
Thats up to you dude! With headphones for an ekit bass is super important for the kick drum / floor tom range. Kind of the "gold standard" for these drums are the Audio Technica ATH-M50x's, but the 40's also get great reviews and fit your budget.
When it comes to headphones if you ask 10 people, you'll get 10 different responses. If possible, test out but I understand if that's not an option. Best of luck and have a Merry Christmas!
I am in need of a new pair of headphones, and upon my research i stumbled across the ATH m40x which seem perfect for me. My plan is to buy a pair of solid headphones and then add an attachable microphone (like the modmic) on so that i can use them as a gaming headset when in need. I mostly play video games and listen to music so i i don't know if these headphones are the way to go. Anyone got any suggestions for me or any opinion on the m40x? amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
p.s: I listen to music all the time so i need a good pair of headphones for music anyway so i decided to mix them together so that i wouldn't have to buy two pairs and thus saving some money.
If you can stretch your budget just a bit further, Amazon has the ATH-M40x marked down to $79.99. At this price point, they are an exceptional value and perfect for music. I bought these on Prime Day and have been blown away.
I’ve used these for half a year now and love them. They’re pretty close to what you described though they are closed back. I’m sure you could find some cheaper if you wanted but these are a good reference point.
Closed or open back headphones depend on situation. I do all of my recording and editing myself and don't have anyone else around so enjoy closed back for the fact I dont hear anything around me and can focus on my monitoring audio. If you plan on doing a podcast with another person in the room I would suggest looking for an open backed pair since it makes it way easier to hear people
Currently I have Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, had them for quite a while.
Are there headphones that are significantly better than the M40x and are worth buying for about under $300?
The audio technica m40x are on sale for $20 off on amazon bringing the price to $80. I’d go with those as it’s not a bad deal, and the addition of the detachable cable increases the longevity by a whole lot.

The Audio-Technica ATHM40x seem like a great pair for their price. Although, some people mention their high clamping force, which may get better with time.
Don't buy earbuds or anything bluetooth if you value quality of sound or your ears. Earbuds will damage your eardrums and potentially your inner ear structure if you use them for too long and bluetooth headphones sound like dogshit.
I have a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40x headphones and they've been the absolute best investment I've ever made. I'd even recommend bumping up to the M50xs if you can afford to do so. They're over-ear and sound absolutely stunning. You'll notice tones in drums and bass that you have never noticed before. They're studio quality and pretty durable. I bring them everywhere with me.
Not too sure about the Alpha, as it also doesn't utilize a USB soundcard (generally you can assume USB headphones to be inferior). At the least I can offer that the one I linked served me well for ~2 years. Had no issues with either playing games or listening to music. I might also consider the M40x, although it is not a headset in that it has a mic. The Cloud I will have more punchy sounding bass, however. $60 is probably a better deal over the $99 M40x's.
I bought a pair of Audio Technica M40x's for work to listen to them 8 hrs a day every day and they're amazing. Super comfy, great sound signature, nice and light and not crazy expensive. Bought mine on sale for $100 CAD, I highly recommend them.

Ah, bummer. Not many options at this point. You can get into soldering and try to either replace only the jack or the whole cable, which requires you to cut it at some point and replace it with a new one.
You could get these alternatively, if you're not on a super tight budget,... sounds much better and have upgraded build.
Best headphones for CS:GO or other competitive FPS games?
I don't really want to buy a headset due to me wanting to have the best audio quality and sound-stage possible, I was considering these but am not sure if they would be good for pinpointing enemy positions and such. Any other headphones worth considering? My budget is 80GBP or 100USD, I know this should belong on a headphone subreddit or something but whatever.
I also enjoy music production so if you could bare that in mind with recommendations that would be appreciated.
Thank^~you~

That's from literally this thread. Use the template, or if you aren't going to and just want a generic ass answer get the M40x's and you won't be let down.
http://www.amazon.in/Technica-ATH-M40X-Professional-Over-ear-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1491327982&sr=1-1&keywords=audio+technica+m40x Slightly over his budget, just linking to make it easier for him to find but i can also recommend the M40X, they are great.
Is active noise cancellation a requirement? Most sealed cans isolate noise well enough on their own, and the only noise cancelling headphone I've seen worth buying is the QC35, which is way over budget.
I'll throw out a recommendation for the M40X's. Definitely not perfect, but a good buy for the money. Extra money can be used towards nicer pads, Brainwavz HM5's being a common pairing.
Looking for a pair of headphones to plug in my home theater while playing on the Steamlink. Also used to watch tv when I/GF is sleeping.
Budget -150$ flexible
Source - Yamaha RXV-577 Reciever (big plug)
Requirements for Isolation - Dont think so, used only at home
Will you be using these Headphones in Public? NO
Preferred Type of Headphone - Open to suggestion
Preferred tonal balance - I would say balanced ?
Past headphones - Curently using Kingston Hyper X 2 on my PC and PS4, i think they sound good for the price
Preferred Music - Not using for music, but Metal/Punk
What would you like to improve on from your set-up? Need a longer cable than the kingstons, also would like a dedicated set for this specific use
Location: CANADA (would like an Amazon suggestion, or NCIX)
I am guessing i could get any type of headphone and just get an adapter for the bigger plug ? Also need a relatively long cable since Reciever is about 8fts away. So far my best guess is the Audio Technica M40x https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00HVLUR54?ref=emc_b_5_t
edit: Formating
Looking to get a new headset + mic combo, but if possible i'd like it to also work cough on my PS4 & XB1 so I can avoid having 2-3 headsets, been looking at the Audio Technica M40X but not sure if I can use a mic with them on PC/PS4/XB1, anyone have any input? Thanks
Audio-Technica ATH-M40X Professional Headphones - Black
Audio-Technica's ATH-M50Xs are the best headphones you can get for under $200. The M40's are just one step down and judging by the reviews they still sound amazing.
I had to upgrade them because reasons, and going with the $100 habit I'm currently using these: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477840974&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+technica+ath+m40x
I will probably get whatever they come up with next and probably a digit higher (50s).
okay, so if you cant get good room treatment, headphones is the way to go while mixing. Just get something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HVLUR54/ref=s9_simh_gw_g267_i2_r?ie=UTF8&fpl=fresh&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_r=G86VC8J4WKRYYWQ3RN71&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=6aad23bd-3035-4a40-b691-0eefb1a18396&pf_rd_i=desktop
I really recommend that you have some speakers though, just to listen to regular stuff because headphones could get annoying after a while. never use speakers to mix if you dont have room treatment though :)
I just got some Audio-Technica headphones, this one I think, and I like them. I wear glasses so my main concern was them not hurting my ears with my glasses on. Normally my ears start to hurt after an hour or so. But not with these! So I imagine without glasses they'd be even better.
I don't know much about headphones, but I recently bought these.
I've used my Vive for about 4-5 hours so far and haven't noticed any slipping. The only thing I dont like is how foldable and flexible they are. I guess its good for traveling, but I find it to be an annoyance.
> ATH-M50x
Is this the type you are talking about?
Audio Technica have a nice line up of headphones. The M40x's might be a good choice. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40X-Professional-Headphones-Black/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1458248510&sr=8-3&keywords=audio+technica+ath+%2C50
If you game at all, the the HyperX are great for under 100.
If you're focusing just on music, pretty much any Pioneer headphones are fantastic, but I personally prefer the shape and style of the Panasonic DJ headphones. I still have my old Technics 1200 model, which is essentially identical to the Panasonic 1250 remake.
Edit: I just happened across these Audio-Technica headphones on sale, a cheaper alternative to Pioneers but pretty much the same style. I've heard a lot of good things about A-T headphones so these might be worth checking out too
I have the ATH-M40x, and they're pretty great. They aren't noise-canceling, but the sound quality is really good, and if you've got music going, you can't really hear much else around you. A big audiophile friend of mine (gets headsets sent to him by Sennheiser for reviews, etc) told me these are probably the best if you're a "I don't want to spend $1000 on headphones" kind of person.
These are the ones I use (Audio Technica ATH-M40x). While they're not noise canceling, they block out standard office background noises very well. I wear glasses and they're super comfortable for hours. While these are not as good as the M50x version, they're the best if you're looking to buy headphones for < $100
I'm thinking about going with the M40x with the Blue Snowball Ice bundle, as seen here, because I don't know how much I would like the dual cables from the mod mic. Is that ans issue to you? (Assuming you have a mod mic)
Here's what I use, the sound is amazing way better than Astro but the mic is kinda cheap.
I use a pair from Audio-Technica that do the trick pretty well. Haven't had issues ear wise, unless I'm wearing a thick beanie with the headphones on top of it. After several hours having them on (with the beanie), it can be an issue. Works fine with a thin beanie however.
You can find the pair I bought over here. The full name on Amazon is: "Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Professional Studio Monitor Headphones"
If you don't have monitors, the suggestion I usually see is to mix it on a set of speakers/headphones that you trust (i.e., know how they sound) and then play that mix in various different settings (i.e., in a car, in a home stereo system, wherever you can) and take notes on what sounds good and what sounds bad. It's a little more troublesome, but it's probably the best way to mix without quality gear.
To clarify what I mean about mixing first into headphones that you can trust: first listen to some of your favorite music on those headphones and pay attention to how everything sounds, then try to re-create that sound/balance in your own tracks.
Alternatively, you can find studio monitor headphones quite cheaply, I know the aht-m40 from audio-technica is pretty quality and goes for about $100.
Budget: $100
Source: laptop, phone
Requirements for Isolation: Dorm room, common areas. would prefer closed headphones
Preferred Type of Headphone: Over ear
Past headphones: Only cheap earbuds
Preferred tonal balance: Honestly don't know as I am pretty new to headphones.
I wear hearing aids also so I want headphones that would work well with them.
I have been looking at the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x. Would this be a good fit?
Yeah I second this. I got the Audiotechnica ATH-M40x(the M50xs little brother). Best value you can get around the 100 dollar price point.
Budget - around $100
Source - smartphone
Requirements for Isolation - My requirement is that music shouldn't bother anyone close to me in public.
Preferred Type of Headphone - Portable, over-ears. I really want to avoid on-ear headphones.
Preferred Tonal Balance - Overall balance.
Preferred Music - I can listen everything but mainly epic music, rock and rap.
Headphones I've Considered - ATH-m40x - I know these aren't really portable pair of headphones, but it looks like they are closest to what i really expect. In my price range, over-ear, good sound quality, sturdy and collapsible. It would be great to hear how they work as portable headphones from someone who use them outside on a daily basis.
Other suggestions are appreciated, thank you very much.
If you watch ATH-M50's you can definitely find a 15% off coupon on amazon and get them for like 110.
but if M50's are out of your range, the M40's are really good too
Hi, looking to spend about £60, on headphones (closed) for use on some transport and some use at home (though not much as I have decent speakers).
At the moment I'm considering the m40Xs as they are available at £59 from amazon warehouse deals - or even £56.50 with slight cosmetic imperfections.
In terms of what I want from the headphones, just general better sound, I've tried my friends m50's and found them to be really good - am I right to say the m40x's will be near the same level? M50X's go for about £86 on warehouse deals and £100 new, so I didn't think it was worth the extra.
Any other suggestions of headphones to look at would be great, I mainly use them for rock music though I like to listen to a mix (from classical to house).
Cheers! :)
EDIT: Also a quick (maybe dumb) question about amazon warehouse deals. If the item is more damaged that I would accept, can I return it? I know their return policy is pretty good but wasn't sure.
M40X is new under $100 (and it's the same price at many retailers). M50X will be a little tougher to find for that price, as they're in pretty high demand.
Is it these?
A few years back I was thinking about switching to some audio technicas and a clip-on mic. With the sale right now I'll probably order them tonight
I am thinking of upgrading to the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x , but want to make sure that they will last me a long time and be worth the money. In your experience, how long have these headphones lasted you, and do you recommend them for purchase?
Hey everyone,
I made a video guide a while ago on how to modify these into a seriously good headphone, as well as a gaming headset. You check check out my video here: https://youtu.be/l93ibiQA63M
I think the M40X are a decent value at the sale price of $69 - it saves you about $30 which you can put towards more comfortable and better sounding pads, standard detachable cable, and boom microphone.
Since this guide is a little dated, I would also recommend Brainwavz Oval Gel pads instead, if you're willing to spend the extra. They prevent your ears and head from overheating during long listening/gaming sessions and provide a more accurate sound response than the slightly bass-boosted pleather pads.
I would also highly recommend using the "AppleDAC", especially if you do not have an external DAC/amplifier. You will find that you can achieve much clearer sound output and input with less noise, interference, and distortion than your motherboard's output. You can check out my overview of the AppleDAC on my website here: https://svrblds.net/appledac

piggy backing on the top comment to add: the little brother of these headphones are also on sale for $74 (usually $100) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR54
also both of these work great with the VMODA boompro mic for gaming https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BJ17WKK
these together would be better than much more expensive "gamer" branded headsets which are normally much lower quality than similarly priced headphones alone
****EDIT: some leg work required, see below
A few people are saying Cloud II, which I respect but don't honestly recommend. Having had bad experiences with headsets that utilize a USB connection, I recommend staying away from them. The original HyperX Cloud headset uses both a mic and audio jack and that's the only true headset I can honestly recommend.
I'd also suggest you look into other alternatives for audio though. Right now, as they're on sale, I'd highly recommend the Audio Technica ATH-M40x since it's on sale on Amazon right now. I'd also recommend getting an Antlion ModMic. I have the 4.0 Omnidirectional and I can't recommend it enough, the sound quality on it is absolutely fantastic

https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_S8XKR89Y8WXCFMBKFWR9
How do these compare to the audio technica ATH-m40s? Roughly the same price on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
A lot of people swear by the M40x's too and claim they are better than the 50's, and generally run cheaper. On sale for a $100 right now actually: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
Those may be worth picking up. /r/headphones can tell you more about other $80-150 options too.
One thing i really like about my M50x's (and the m40x's can get one too) is that there are tons of bluetooth adapters: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Adapter-and-Amplifier-BAL-M50X/dp/B01MFFH54C/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=BALM50x&qid=1553534369&s=musical-instruments&sr=1-1-catcorr
So my set can be wireless now too for when i'm travelling, which is rad.
Actually, holy shit, they have a wireless + mic adapter now for the M50x's:
If that was out when i bought my Arctis 7's I totally would have gotten that adapter instead, lol. Though apparently the mic is garbage.
From what I know, good home studio headphones will cost you at least over $200. If you aren't in the music production business then I can see why you'd be going for a nice pair of budget headphones.
Sennheiser and Audio Technica are 2 brands I really enjoy. I have used the Audio Technica m50x's for over 2 years and they still hold up great. They costed me around 175 CAD but I hear great things from m40x's as well which are going for around $80 USD on amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ath+m40x&qid=1554515435&s=gateway&sr=8-3 ). The price on the m40s are practically a steal right now, so they are my top recommendation.
I also know that open-ended headphones are usually best for mixing, which the m40s are not. The only reason I chose closed-ended was to prevent leakage when listening to music in public. Your preference may vary but it's something to take into consideration.

Audio-Technicas ATH-MX40. They're recommended by /r/headphones in their wiki
Okay, so it looks like I'm getting a pair of M40x
My last question about them is: where should I buy them?
They're on amazon for $99, just the headphones, cords and bag
Finally, there's this $109 bundle with a $40 amp
Is there a better deal somewhere else? I plan to sell the bundled amp, so hopefully I'll get the headphones for about $75.

Also, I'm looking to add suggestions and bring attention to my poll on massdrop for entry level headphones that are less than $100! Any suggestions that you have are welcome!

Good call. Also, the M40x alone is currently $79 at Amazon as well, but believe there was already another post on that recently.
So I would recommend the Audio Technica ATH-M40Xs (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40X-Professional-Headphones-Black/dp/B00HVLUR54) They are on sale for 79 pounds right now on Amazon. They are pretty neutral headphones that will be just fine for Netflix and some music while commuting. I have them and I can personally testify that the only time somebody could hear what I was listening to was when I was listening to music at almost full volume on my phone in a silent classroom so they should be just fine for commuting. They are pretty comfortable and come with two detachable cables. One is 3 meters long and the other is around 1.5m long, but it's a coiled cable that stretches to 3 meters so that would be the ideal one for portability. It won't require you to have an amp or a DAC to avoid getting yelled at by audio enthusiasts about how you're not using it to it's full potential or something. Pretty simply it's a well built, cheap, and semi-casual pair of headphones that sound like they are perfect for you, without maxing out your budget.
Ok so I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to headphones either, but I have owned the Audio Technica ATH-M40x for 3 or 4 years, at least half of that time was when I was in college. These bad boys are tough. I threw them in my backpack, dropped them on the floor, etc and they're still chugging like day 1. They fold up which is helpful. I can wear them all day at work without any discomfort. They're pretty cheap too, I just found them for $80 on Amazon (link below). I think they're pretty balanced, and I'm able to get the exact sound I like with my phone's equalizer. My only complaint sonically is that there is a little bit of a weird spike in the high end that for me hurts my ears, but it's rare in the music I listen to.
They are not wireless by default, but there is a pretty solid Bluetooth adapter that is sold separately (and made by a different company altogether). Battery life is so so for it, but it works well and blends into the overall headphones well. Total for the headphones and adapter would be ~$110
Alternatively: For a solid chunk of change more (about 70 bucks more), you can get the M50x with built in Bluetooth, link below. Honestly I didn't like the sound of the M50x as much as the M40x, I found it much less flat, but they are very popular.
If either of those sound reasonable to you, what I did was went into my local Guitar Center and asked if I could test out some headphones. They let me which was cool, so I was actually able to hear which ones I liked most. Your results may vary if they will let you

Go for the Audio Technica ATH M40x. It is perfect combination for gaming and music without needing an additional amplifier with its great quality drivers for the money and has better sound quality than most headsets (headphone with microphone setup for $100) .
It has almost 2,000 reviews with 4.4 star reviews.
If you want 100+, go for
Closed back headphones
Audio Technica ATH M50X studio monitoring headphones
Beyerdynamic DT770 32/80 ohm studio monitoring headphones
Sennheiser HD598Cs studio headphones
-
Open back headphones
Beyerdynamic DT990 32/80 ohm studio monitoring headphones (NINJA streamer uses this headphone)
Sennheiser HD598SR studio headphones (Fortnite streamer "SypherPK" and many more streamers use this)
All these headphones listed above have incredible reviews on amazon and I used to be an audiophile so I researched plenty of headphones
if you go over 100+ headphones, an amp might be necessary to pump out its full potential
Budget amp**: FiiO E10k Amp/DC combo**
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you were trying to get a "headset
" then go for
HyperX Cloud II's (best safest choice, detachable microphone so you can take them out if needed, good sound quality, mic is pretty decent)
Steel Series Arctis 7 / 5 (They're getting better at making headsets, plenty of reviews on youtube to research and get lost in xD)
Logitech G Pro Headset (might encounter software issues, other than that a great headset. reviews are bad due to complaints about software issues/bugs)
Apologies yes.

Help me with cabling for headphones and mic as it's sort of a mess. This is my headset system that I use mainly for Xbox and PC:
Here is a picture of my setup. Note I don't use the Y-splitter when I play on PC.

one more question im very sorry for bothering you...
On amazon for the m40x its very confusing I see many different models, is this the correct one? https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATHM40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=ATH-M40X&qid=1621448126&sr=8-3
Consider an ATH-M40X + a boom mic or budget USB microphone if you're considering listening to music in addition to gaming.

Welcome.
Since I again concur with u/Jawntily on all points, the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x at $79 on Amazon is a good buy and some claim the ATH-M40x is better than the ATH-M50x.
If you're not convinced to try the budget basshemoth which is the Modern Retro + Brainwavz XL but you want quality bass at ~$100, then I suggest focusing on overall good headphones with sufficient bass extension and leaving it to your amp and EQ to tweak the sound, however if you can find another $49 (or $39 with a referral from an existing Massdrop subscriber) and catch the next Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee drop (or get lucky on a used deal) then you'll have one of the best headphone deals of all time and lack nothing in bassland.
The used market including r/AVexchangecathederal is a good place for headphone deals. That's where I got the Monoprice Monolith M1060C on my head (which has a cathedral of bass, but not for $100).
That's pretty cool dude!
These ones! :)

Audio Technica ATH-M40x and a separate Boom Mic for ATH-M40x will get you just under your price range.
You can also do a V-Moda BoomPro, but you'll need to use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter to get them to fit the M40x.
I've owned both boom mics, along with the Lovinstar variants (faux Boom Pro). The mic quality is identical between them all. V-Moda still gets my overall vote though.

For 100 the audio technica m40x would be my reccomendation it's built well and has a great sound and are similar to the beats but if you want want something more premium the 32ohm version of the beyerdynamic dt770 is just around 150 and is absolutely excellent Here are amazon links for both
M40x: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATHM40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
Dt770: https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-Over-Ear-Headphones-professional-smartphones/dp/B008POFOHM
The DT770s are great headphones but wouldn't be my choice. But yes, they're solid based on your preferences and I'm sure you'd be happy with them.
As far as the ohms, yeah go with the 80. 80 ohms will give you slightly better bass. Higher ohms you probably wouldn't want to use without an amp.
I would get Monoprice Monolith M565s as my first choice.
My second choice would be ATH M50Xs with a nice pair of new brainwavz earpads - but from what I understand ATH-M50Xs are on backorder right now. The only place on Amazon I saw ship right away is charging 300 for em, which is double what their usual price is and a less than reputable seller for 220.
The M50X Bluetooth are available for 170 tho, and that's a really solid option too.
If you wanted to save a little money M40Xs with the earpads would be a good choice too.
Edit - actually looks like guitar center has M50s in stock in the white color if that's ok with you
Black are available for order at ATH official website, but I'm positive they'll send you a backorder email. Idk how long that could be to ship, but if you're ok with that it's a great choice.
Also you should know if you order the Monoprice, they are the best sound you can get for under 200... But the sound leakage is high. They are loud to other people in the area (you could almost use them as speakers lol). If you need privacy I'd go to the ATH.
I'm a fan of great (pretty much anything) with minimal expense. I have Audio Technica ATH-M40x's (or whatever the letter model number are) for wired headphones, and I bought the Bluetooth version (30's I think)... I'm extremely happy with both. When I wear them all I hear is my device, and my husband sitting beside me talking is VERY loud. Both are on Amazon, the Bluetooth ones were about $80, I think the wired ones are about the same cost, but I bought mine and 3 years ago, so I could be wrong. I've seen them both on Amazon last month. The wired ones are not the most expensive, which are extra amazing (hubby has those), but not the cheapest, either.
The ear cups are oval, shaped like your actual ear (who has round ears?), and are super convey for hours. The Bluetooth have a mic so you can answer your phone with them also. VERY great!
Wired: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=cm_sw_r_taa_XSN7EbZ88X6QS

Best wishes!
A little more pricey, but the ATH-M40x headphones go on sale for $70 occasionally, in fact, it seems like you just missed a sale on them.
They're currently $99 on Amazon, but if you keep your eye on it there should be a sale at some point.
They're the only closed-backed headphones in that price range that I have experience with. Sound is pretty good as well as the comfort, although I did upgrade to Brainwavz pads at one point.
The Takstar Pro 82s are also a good option, I haven't used them personally, but they're popular in the headphone modding community and have quality drivers.
If I was going to buy headphones right now I'd get these. https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATHM40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54 Almost any cheap USB mic will be better than a headset mic.
Ah sorry to hear that. These that I linked don't go into your ear completely like the Sony ones that come with the VR though. They sit in your ear but don't seal out sound like the Sony ones.
That said though, what's your budget exactly? I can also recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x or if you have a bit more to spend then a step up is the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. They come in a few different colors to fit your style. They are closed back headphones so they help seal out sound while in VR and they fit over the headset really well.
The M50x's fold up really nice when not in use, and also fold against your chest if you wear them around your neck. The M40x's don't fold up but have about the same fit while actually using them. The only thing about them that might be a bit harsh, is since they are closed headphones they have a strong clamp for the first few months until they wear in. It goes away with a bit of use or you can manually stretch them open if you're careful. Another advantage to the M50x is that it has replaceable cables. It comes with a really short cable that works perfect with the VR headset and doesn't get tangled up either, so I still definitely recommend those if they are within your budget.
You basically have three options for $100 closed headphones
Going by your criteria:
This is getting boring, but I'm going to have to recommend the Takstar Pro 82 (again). Especially if you get it for $50, while it is unbeatable under $100!
Good luck with the decision!
Im no headphone guru but I would tend towards Audio Technica ATH-M40x's
Or
Both are very balanced sounding and high quality for the price. Im sure there are others here who can recommend more (probably better) options at that price point as well.
You can pick up a small headphone amp pretty cheap:
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_1?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A13880161%2Ck%3Aportable+headphone+amp
But considering your price point it seems a little silly to buy headphones and an amp, when there are perfectly good headphones that don't need one like the m40x

Audio Technica ATH M40X: $95.00 (was $149.00)
The Audio Technica ATH M40X are on sale right now for 6,945. High quality, great sounding headphones that fall right on the edge of your budget.
Appreciate the response. I was chatting with someone the other day and they were heavily recommending that unless I was an audiophile and playing the corresponding quality FLACs, etc., that I just buy stereo studio monitor headphones like the Audio Technical ATH-M40x or the Sennheiser HD559HD559s. Both around $99, and the main choice being whether you want closed back or open headphones. For me, I don’t have any concerns that I want to be silent for those around me, I just want the best audio experience I can get in a pair of headphones.
He also said you really should power your headphones with a DAC, and his was the FiiO E10k USB DAC. I know the Astro A40s come with a DAC that a lot of people like as well. And then you can just run a different headphone cable that clips on to your headphone cable and the boom mic attaches easily. He uses the Antlion Audio ModMic and the choice there being whether or not you want a mute switch. I personally don’t stream or even play online games where I talk to people much anymore. A year ago when I was heavy into ESO and talking every day it would have mattered more, but now I’m just trying to find the best audio experience I can get.
—————
I also, for what it’s worth, picked up a Woojer Strap. It’s sort of like a SubPac, if you’re familiar with that? But instead of being an entire backpack sized rumble device, it’s just a seatbelt or messenger bag like strap. I grabbed it for $130, it’s normally $150. It has two bass transducers on it (the SubPac has 6). But it’s much more versatile and portable. It has bluetooth so you can use that to pair your audio input or just run an audio in to the Strap and then a wire out to your headphones. It also massively boosts the volume in addition to feeling like I strapped a subwoofer to my chest. I can only imagine what the SubPac is like.
I pull it out for big action movies and the odd show like “Legion”, and then it’s great for PSVR especially, but “DOOM” was amazing in it. I actually intended to just mess with it for a month - they have a 30 day money back guarantee trial period, and I bought it via PayPal credit because they’ll pay for the return shipping... but I ended up liking it so much that I kept it. If I got a nice pair of headphones, I’d probably use a splitter or figure out a way to just duplicate the audio and send that to the Strap and not worry about running the wire from that to the headphones as well. It’s frustrating that the Steel Series have one for the PS4 and one for the XBOX One, and that there’s not just an easy solution for everything.
—————
If money wasn’t an issue and you just wanted a pair of headphones that were amazing for most everything you do, what would you get? You think the ROG 7.1 would be any better than a good pair of stereo headphones? What about all the Dolby Digital, Plus, DTS, DTS: Headphone X, Atmos, and everything? Again, I don’t mind wires. The Logitech Artemis G933s use a USB dongle that transmits the bluetooth signal, they’re nice.. I just think I probably need a DAC to drive them better. I felt like an idiot for not thinking to just plug the headphones into my audio receiver, which isn’t amazing and is probably 10-15 years old, but it powers my 5.1 system and does DTS. I assume it only does stereo with headphones plugged in though, so I don’t really know what to look for with the audio processing stuff and how to maximize on games that are mastered in Atmos, etc.
I tried about 10 sets in the store and these were my favorite.
People love the Mx40's. I got the Status Audio CB-1's for my gaming headset. If you're looking for an open back, people seem to really love the shp9500. Like i said, those are open back and are light on the bass. Another open back that people love in the price range are the HD 559. I've heard good things about the Massdrop x HiFiMAN HE-350.
Kind of depends on what you're looking for in terms of sound and where you're using them.
E: if you aren't dead set on new, i'd find something more expensive and check out /r/AVexchange. Really good deals and it's a bunch of people with headphone buying additctions. Just buy and sell constantly. I mentioned above, but i paid $350 for what would've cost me about $600 new after mods. I find that headphones is an area where people take care of their stuff because it takes a special kind of person to start dropping hundreds on headphones that aren't beats.
So for separate, in your budget, maybe:
Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend open back headphones for casual use. They have their use and purpose in specific situations (like recording studio for example-only instrumental!) but definitely not for casual listening, usage in public, and definitely not gaming. Especially, if you have noisy fans.
The golden standard is either Audio Technica M40X or Audio Technica AVC500.
M40X are portable (folding) have a removable cable, and are less heavier. Great for travelling or usage while moving (DJ for example). Also, the sound is mostly flat (a good thing), so you can use them for monitoring, audio edit or set them up as you like it in your EQ.
ATH-AVC500 are heavier, have bigger, ohms and range is wider. They also have a different range of highs, mids, and lows, so the sound doesn't need too much EQ tweaking, and are more comfortable for longer sessions.
I personally have both, and they are the best purchase of my life.
Beats aren't well liked around here, but it's hard to give an immediate answer.
First, what kind of music do you listen to?
Second, what is your budget?
Third, do you have things you like and don't like about headphones you've tried?
Last, what are you planning to use them for? Are they at home? On the subway? Do you want to be able to hear your surroundings? Does it matter if the sound leaks a little?
Under 100, Mshenay just did a comparison and the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x came out on top. These are well reviewed and are a good introductory headphone.
It's a different sound signature, m40x is more neutral while m50x is more v-shaped (more bass, more highs)
For under 100EUR I would definitelt stick to wired and go with the Audio Technica ATH M40X.
The problem here is that the S7 Edge has an insanely bad headphone output and is only able to output 360mV into a 16 Ohm load (~8 milli watt). The phone is absolute trash tier when it comes to the headphone output. And that alrady low output power is topped off by ,ore than 5 Ohm output impedance and 0.7%THD at full volume...absolute garbage
I recommend you buy a FiiO A1 headphone amplifier to go with the M40X. That would also fix your volume issue on the one more triple driver.
That would mean investing ~130EUR...the same price as a decent entry level Bluetooth headphone from Sennheiser.
IMHO the M40X sounds better than the HD4.40 and you won't run into battery/codec or lag issues.
small disclaimer here, i am a bit of an audio snob so mostly have more expensive gear because i like overpaying for things apparently lol
So, at that price point im really not that sure what is "best" as i dont have a ton of personal experience there other than some audio technica m40x, which are on sale for $80 with no mic on amazon right now. at $80 they are great, but with no mic you would need to spend a bit more.
if you could up your budget just a bit you could add a v moda boom mic that would work with the m40x. it is $30.
http://smile.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Microphone-Gaming-Communication/dp/B00BJ17WKK/ref=sr_1_4
any non-usb mic would work too, but the v moda attaches to the headset to keep things nice and tidy. so something like either of these 2 should do the trick and both are under $10. you just have to figure out how to get the mic in place since it isnt designed to attach to a headset straight out the box. the one is a lapel mic so just attach it to your shirt, and the second could possibly be broken down and you could try attaching it to the headset on your own somehow.
http://smile.amazon.com/Microphone-Smartphone-Blusmart-Omnidirectional-Condenser/dp/B01H19E0JE/ref=sr_1_39 http://smile.amazon.com/Connectland-Tabletop-Microphone-Recording-CL-ME-606/dp/B0028Y4DCC/ref=sr_1_7
Or you could try these Hyperx Cloud II's out. i have never tried these, but they are in your price range and they are sort of a chinese knockoff version of the more expensive mmx300s i have. they have a lot of really good reviews though so might be worth a try. even though they arent from an actual headphone manufacturer they apparently are very good for the price point, so could be just right for you.
http://smile.amazon.com/HyperX-Gaming-Headset-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B00SAYCXWG/ref=sr_1_1
you could also pop over to /r/headphones to look for some advice. there are people there with a lot more experience with products across a wider price range so could be somebody who already owns a headphone/mic combo that fits that budget.
I am looking for some wired headphones for some music and gaming. I have narrowed it down to the Audio Technica ATH-M40X and the Status Audio CB-1. If there are any better options, please suggest them to me. Thanks.
Full disclaimer, read through the sub but know very little about headphones. I'm looking for a pair of over the year headphones with isolation and maybe noise cancelling. Currently in betweent TH-M50X and some refurbished Sennhiser Urbanite XL (Indeed, tons of refurb jobs here ).
Full disclaimer, read through the sub but know very little about headphones. I'm looking for a pair of over the year headphones with isolation and maybe noise cancelling. Currently in betweent TH-M40X and AKG K240.
NEED COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES
The headphones i currently have both start to hurt my ears after only like 15-30 minutes of use. I don't have an unusually huge head, my ears do stick out a little more than average though.
Brands I've Tried:
So anyhoo, recommend me a set of over ears where comfort is #1 priority. Big ear pads so my ears don't get smashed, not a huge cord (but who cares, sometimes you're stuck with some 8' monster ^hehe ), Open or Closed doesn't matter, and weight isn't a big problem for me mainly just the ear smashing thing.
My budge is ~$150, ideally looking for a sale to get it less than $100. Thanks!
Over ear : ATH M40-X ( buy refurbished to save some cash maybe) get these pads for better comfort
In Ear : RHA MA 750i ( 3 year warranty ) / Pinnacle P2
ATH-M40x would be a better choice.
Canadian prices are insane by the way.
Ok guys, im currently debating two scenarios atm based on my current setup.
As it stands I right now have a Audio-Technica ATH-M40x ( link for ref However I am unsatisfied with it. Coming from a hyper X cloud headset I feel that the headphones are lacking proper bass. Granted, I am currently using onboard audio (again, link ref)
Im currently debating going back to the cloud headset, but before I do, I want your take if I should instead get an internal sound card. Currently price range is $150.
Weighing in to say I recently bought these ATH-M40x and am happy with them. That said they were $84 when I bought them and are $100 now...
Hello, Looking for headphones for my little bro. Will be used for gaming, would like detailed/direction of sound.
I'm undecided between Audio-Technica ATH-M40x or Sony MDRV6 would replace pads with these in the near future.
Would very much appreciate r/headphones opinion's or recommendation of another headphone before making a final choice.
Oh, so the M40X wouldn't work on a PC anyways without a converter...?
Edit: it looks like it uses a 3.5mm, but has a 2.5mm converter that it comes with
Budget : Less than 200 cad/ 150 usd
What would be the best headphones for great game soundtrack lovers? ( Like witcher, dark souls and total war games ) I have gone over many options but can't decide because all reviews say X headphones are the best sound clarity under X amount of money while they review another pair and say the same thing.
Trying to decide between these 2 ( dont mind more recommendations)

My pair of Audio Technica ATH-M40X that I've had for a little over a year just broke today. The swivel that allows it to turn 90 degrees broke off suddenly without warning. I am debating between buying a new pair for $79 on Amazon or going a bit higher and getting a refurbished pair of ATH-M50X for $109. Is it worth the extra money? Is buying refurbished worth the discount?
I'm going to argue for the M40's instead. I used the M50's for four years, and they really are excellent headphones. The M40's, however, are lighter and more comfortable to wear while sacrificing an almost negligible level of sound quality. Only the highest highs and the lowest lows are lost compared to the M50's, at frequencies that most human ears can't hear anyways. The most important factor, though, is the cost. You can save ~$50 with the M40's without really sacrificing anything (and gaining a little bit in comfort!)
There are a number of websites that offer comparisons between the two for more technical details. Here is one of them.
They sell for around $77 on amazon new
I've never bought headphones before I've always used the Apple earbuds. I've been looking at these two: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826138190&ignorebbr=1

A great pair of closed-back headphones under $100 USD are the ATH-M40x.
If you really need something cheap, get something like the Koss PortaPro.
Looks like I'm gonna keep recommending the ATH M40x on this thread.
a bit over yout budget but i would say u wont regret it , but check it out .https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_4?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1483100095&sr=1-4&keywords=audio+technica, https://www.amazon.com/Antlion-Audio-ModMic-Attachable-Microphone/dp/B00T6XSMW0?th=1
Maybe try getting him a nice set of headphones. Got both my parents a pair this year and did about 2 weeks of research. Found that closed back headphones (they don't leak sound so people don't hear what you're listening to / annoy others) is probably best.

These are some of the top rated headphones for the price, and your dollar is going to quality unlike branding with something like beats by dre (which just base boosts the sound). If he plays any instruments both types come with a jack to plug into a keyboard or guitar amp.
Personally I would love a set of the mx50s. I would suggest not going below an mx40 as the cord is not interchangable and its stuck at 3 meters in length.. way to long. where as the 40's and 50's have that as well as a 1.2m cable.
Not only can you use this for rec. but he can use it for mixing music
Happy holidays

Personally I would love a set of the mx50s. I would suggest not going below an mx40 as the cord is not interchangable and its stuck at 3 meters in length.. way to long. where as the 40's and 50's have that as well as a 1.2m cable, and he can always buy a shorter one if he wants.
Happy holidays
Edit: This might also go well with travel plans
Maybe try getting him a nice set of headphones. Got both my parents a pair this year and did about 2 weeks of research. Found that closed back headphones (they don't leak sound so people don't hear what you're listening to / annoy others) is probably best.
I went with the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481500389&sr=8-1&keywords=mx40

Not only can you use this for rec. but he can use it for mixing music
Happy holidays
Than you can get an even better version of them:

edit:
modmic is an adhesive microphone option: http://www.modmic.com/
If you can deal with open back headphones (sound leaks out the sides so everyone can hear what you're playing and you can hear outside sounds) I'd recommend the Phillips SHP9500's. Here's one of my favorite reviewers reviewing them.
If you need closed back, the same guy recommends the Audio Technica m40x's.
Also, as stated below, absolutely visit /r/headphones!

Correct.
Here are some:
https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
https://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-518-Headphones-Black/dp/B0042A68R8
"gaming" headsets are bad in general.
These M40x's should do you good
Some of the headphones I've been looking at are the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x's, and the Sennheiser HD 598's
I am also going to be gaming with the headphones I choose.
as others stated, gaming headsets are generally not the best here. get a decent pair of headphones, made by an actual headphone company and a mic and you will have 10x better sound than so called gaming headsets.
your best bet is probably ATH M40x headphones, $89 on amazon at the moment https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
and a VModa BoomPro Mic for $29 https://www.amazon.com/V-MODA-BoomPro-Gaming-Headset-Headphone/dp/B00BJ17WKK/ref=pd_sim_267_12?
just plug the mic into the hedphones instead of the cord that came with the M40s and there you go. headphones when you just want headphones, and a full headset when you want that.
there is also the m50x for a bit more money at $139, though honestly i dont think its worth the extra money. especially just for playing games and basic listening from a computer or phone or something.
https://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-M50X-Headphones-Portable-Amplifier/dp/B01D6FKDT8/ref=sr_1_3?
there are also m30x that are only $69. but YOU DO NOT WANT THESE! these are cheaper than the m40, but these do not have the removable cable like the 40s and 50s do, meaning adding a mic will be more expensive/challenging as you cant just plug the $30 vmoda one in and be good to go. so dont be tempted by the $20 savings on these> https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M30x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUQW8/ref=sr_1_1?
i own the m40x and the m50x as well as several far more expensive pairs of headphones and i can assure you it is hard to find much better sound, comfort and features for the price than you get with the the 40/50x. especially the removable cable, that is missing from my pairs that cost 6 times as much as the 40's.
In that case then this will be better. Slightly less bass than the M50x but its barely noticable and IMO not worth the extra ~$100. I also own a pair of these and they sound great! Pair it with this in-line mic and you're good to go.
If you prefer accurate tonality over bass
If you want a fun sound for bassy genres.
In case you decide to stretch your budget:
They fold up! Check the pictures here: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
Have you looked on amazon yet?
Awesome thanks! Is mixing with headphones a 'no go'? I have these headphones - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40X-Professional-Headphones-Black/dp/B00HVLUR54
Don't know if they're good for mixing?
I highly recommend the Audio Technica ATH M40X or 50X. I've been using the 40X model for about a year, and I've not been disappointing by them. The sound quality is probably one of the best you'll find at that price range, unless you head towards the Sennheisers that you've mentioned.
Comes with a carry bag, and two detachable wires, that have yet to fail on me. Good build quality an comfort (Apparently the 50X model is less comfortable actually :/ ). They are actually Studio based headphones, so no changes are really made to the input audio, but naturally they work just fine for gaming
40X: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40X-Professional-Headphones-Black/dp/B00HVLUR54
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
Wow i could have sworn they were more expensive! reason why i didnt buy them. Oh well. Edited my comment thanks
I changed only a couple of things.
No thermal paste, absolutely no need. Wouldn't see a difference unless you are custom watercooling. The CPU cooler comes with some.
cheaper motherboard. doesn't really make any difference.
Doubled your RAM for only $15
256GB 950 Pro + 500 GB 850 EVO. Not quite as much storage as the 1TB 850EVO, but the 950 Pro is simply astonishingly fast.
Changed the MSI R9 390 to a XFX one, same speed, but $30 cheaper.
The case comes with 2 fans, which is probably enough already. Added a third fan, just because. I would personally go with one higher quality fan vs 2 cheaper ones. Less noise.
I would not buy a gaming headset. They all suck. The Audi-Techica ATH-M40x are amazing for under $100. Much better all around sound experience.
All-in-all $6 cheaper for double the RAM, much faster storage (but only 750GB vs 1TB), and much better headphones.
PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant
The ATH-M50x ( new version is better then the old one but still not my cup of tea) Tbh the ATH-40x is better for neutrality. http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456952408&sr=8-1&keywords=ath-m40x
I cant comment on long term comfort or build quality but imagine it is decent.
Are suppose to be good sounding style cans and come in many different colors.

Check out the ATH-M40X.
I posted this late yesterday so I'll post it again. I'm Looking for something in the sub $120 range to wear at work. No IEMs please. I have DT 770s and absolutely love them but I don't want to constantly carry them to and from work everyday. They're also a little bulky so something with the same comfort and a little bit smaller would be great! I work in a cubicle so they need to be closed and not bleed a lot of sound. Right now i'm look at the ATH-M40x, M20x's, and the ATH-ANC7B from AT and the Sony MDRXB950BT/B, Sony MDRZX770BT
I would say in terms of priority I would say
I had M50x's before my DT770s and returned them because they hurt after wearing them for about 45 minutes which is why I haven't pulled the trigger on any more AT products.
Have a look at Audio Technica ATH-M40X - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40X-Professional-Headphones-Black/dp/B00HVLUR54
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
If you're willing to stretch your budget out a little, these are some amazing and well-known headphones. They offer perfect sound clarity, neutrality, and they're very adjustable and comfortable overall.
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M30x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUQW8
If you'd like to stick closer to your budget, the M30x's are almost just as good, but with slightly less features (Such as a detachable cable, less flexible and have a lower hearing range).
The ATH-M40x, the M50x it's younger brother.
They're comfortable, well build, look good, great sound, good noise cancellation and awesome sound isolation. I can't recommend the ATH series enough for people who want closed back headphones (aka, so your whole college class doesn't have to hear you blast your music)
ATH-M40X. http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
They are tuned flat to get the most accurate sound reproduction, and so you can EQ them to your preferred settings. (they do sound great by default though)
Compared to the ATH-M50 or ATH-M50X they don't come with as much bass, which could be a good or bad thing depending on what you like. You can see the difference here: https://youtu.be/sj69-mWHV3E?t=106 (compare the blue (M40X) and the green (M50X))
? People tend to like these, has detachable cable + bag etc.
If you're not bothered about sound leakage
open backed ones would be better like these.
The audio technica ath-m40x would be perfect for him. Portable enough to be taken on the subway, while also boasting a good neutral sound signature for the stuff he listens to. It's also exactly 100USD.
The only gripes with the M40X is that they might be a bit uncomfortable if he has larger ears, but that can be solved if you are willing to drop twenty on aftermarket pads.
The NVX XPT100 is also very very good, but they will look a bit dorky in public. Fantastic for comfort though.
Hope that helps!
I use Audio Technica ATH-M40Xs but M20Xs and M30Xs are really good as well. They're really well balanced, but they don't have any inline mics. Antlion makes good mics, and they turn any headset into a gaming headset, but the cost around $40. Go for a Zalman Headphone mic instead.
Any artificial surround system is terrible (along with any surround headphones) I wouldn't recommend that to begin with, as for some headphones I would recommend http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1437253192&sr=8-2&keywords=ath
as for a mic look into http://www.modmic.com/
If you're willing to slurge a little bit for better sound and microphone quality I would recommend getting these for headphones http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54 and possibly either the Blue Snowball,Yeti or Nessie for USB microphones. They are great quality for the price and what they are. I personally have the Nessie and for $100 I couldn't ask for more from a usb mic. With the Razer mouse,I would say look around a bit more before getting it. I've heard many times Razer equipment breaks quite frequently. But if i could add my opinion here's a 144hz 24'' monitor for $60 less http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009642&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= . Don't get an optical drive, they're an obsolete piece of hardware. All games can be bought through Steam or Origin. You can also download Windows by putting the install onto a thumb drive,SSD,or external hdd. Like chicken nugget said no need for 32gb that's a waste.
Are the M40's going on sale again? The pcpartpicker link says that it goes on sale at 12:50 PST so it should come on sale again right? Because the page seems that it's not on sale again http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HVLUR54/?tag=pcpp-primeday-20
EDIT: I just realized you might be talking about just watching a stream. I feel like a jackass now but I'll leave my comment up in case anyone is trying to use the SP3 to stream. On that note, I've been using 8Stream to watch source quality on Twitch with my CPU capped at 70%.
----------original comment below----------
I've been streaming from the Surface Pro 3 for about a month now, so here's my experience.
I stream my console games from my SP3 using an AverMedia ExtremeCap U3 and I'm overall pleased with the performance; HOWEVER, it will not work straight out of the box if you want a decent quality stream. As we all know, the SP3 thermal throttles super hard and streaming through OBS is one of the easiest way to hit that thermal limit. In order to get around that, I use a USB fan, pointed at the intake in the top right corner of the SP3 to keep my CPU under the throttling limit.
Here's my setup and config so you can get an idea of what you can run:

I'm replacing my broken Panasonic budget cans and I need something closed (no leaking), durable, and under $100. Specifically, I need something that will not break if thrown around a little (3 cats + bad cable management and a rolling chair) like my Panasonics did and my Monoprice 8323s before that. Also, I'd love an upgrade in sound quality. The Sony MDR-7506s are a no go for me, they're just not comfortable and sound... I guess light is the proper word. The ATH-M40x sounds incredible and is very comfortable from the 15 minutes I spent listening to a friend's pair. However, I'm not sure that is my best path. Here's what I'm considering:
ATH-M40x - crack for my ears, but maybe not the best use of my money
NVX XPT-100 - supposedly great HM5 clones, sound supposedly much like M40x but more comfortable and durable?
Gemini HSR-1000 - these are a "rare find", a clone of Chinese phones that Head-Fi reviewers have compared to M50s
Am I completely off track with this? Am I leaving out any great-value durable, closed, comfortable, neutral <$100 headphones?
Edit: Forgot usage - mostly classic rock and various electronic (especially chiptunes), with some gaming mixed in, wearing for long periods of time.
Razer and Steelseries have a very poor reputation in sound.
Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Headphones
Brand new in box for $85
For reference: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54
The Audio-Technica ATH-M40x are pretty good on that price range.
I've never tried any Sennheiser headphones. I have a pair of these Audio-Technica headphones that I use for audio recording (and usually use this Audio-Technica shotgun mic) and I enjoy them.
>so it doesn't need to have a microphone.
Good, cause you're definitely gonna get one separate. First, watch the first two of this series of videos by Tek Syndicate. For your price point, I'd recommend the Audio Technica ATH-M40X. These will give you pretty good sound for your price point. Two more options (that are both semi-open headphones) are the AKG K240 and the Superlux HD668B.
Posting again to see if I can get any more opinions:
Budget - soft $100, hard $150
Source - Phone and PC
Requirements for Isolation - I'll mostly be using them in public places (bus, college lounges, work), so more is better.
Preferred Type of Headphone - over-ear
Preferred tonal balance - Balanced overall, but with strong melody ranges and bass? So warm to neutral, probably? (I'm new at this)
Past headphones - Sennheiser HD 280 and 439. Liked the sound of the 439 a lot (particularly with pop and EDM), but not a huge fan of the felt-like padding or the plasticky build (though it was sturdy).
Preferred Music - Hugely varied, but currently leaning towards pop/dance, EDM, rock, and indie rock/pop. Recent playlists include Monsters & Men, Zedd, Flo Rida, Little Mix, Green Day, Owl City, and the Jackson 5.
Since last time, I think I've narrowed it down to Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, Creative Aurvana Live, Brainwavz HM5, and NVX XPT100, but I'm open to anything. I thought I had settled on the HM5s, but then I found XPT100s are the same thing (with different pads/headband) for $50 less, and a number of reviews (see here) ranked the M40x above either (due to poor fit), so now I'm unsure again.
Budget - $80 - $120
Source - PC/Android
Isolation - I live in NYC, so isolation is important
Preferred type - Over ear
Preferred tonal - I like bass but not at the expense of drowning out the other ranges
Past headphones - Mostly cheap earbuds and a pair of Sennheiser HD 202 II's which I find to be just okay. They also get pretty warm on the ears.
Preferred music - Hip Hop and electronic with some indie pop mixed in.
The headphones I'm most considering are:
Just saw that the Audio Technica M50X are on sale today for $70: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATHM40x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR54/

that's a tiny bit over your budget, but, it's the best gaming set up I've ever had, when I want to just jam out, I unclip the mic. The sound is excellent. The mic works great, I use it on discord and TS all the time in a competitive environment. Quite often you will find these headphones on sale too, I htink i paid $80 or so and I also think the mic was a bit cheaper when I got it. can't go wrong.
> I have a burget of like 100.
Oh boy do I have good news for you
You won't be disappointed with the M40's. You hear LOTS of opinions when it comes to headphones, there is ALWAYS someone who is going to hate the headphones that you decide on. Truth is, most of them are alright once you know where to look. You'll like these, and you won't need to upgrade for a very long time if you don't want to.
