I haven't gotten close to the present time in my own informal studies yet, but I'd suggest Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, and August Sander: Face of Our Time. One comes with stories, the other comes with an idea. Both worthwhile, IMHO, though it's as much about the pictures as as it is the photographers and their environment. Doesn't need to resonate to be interesting (perhaps to contrast with today).
