Hmm, I have never heard of a tan described as ashy. Have you tried a bronzer? It is basically a shallow skin dye that is included with a sun screen or tanning lotion. As an example: http://www.amazon.com/Australian-Gold-Spray-Bronzer-Ounce/dp/B0013IQKKM This is an SPF 4 so it will give you some protection from the sun while still allowing your skin to tan naturally. The Bronzers will smooth out the coloring. Worth a shot in my opinion.
