Exact same thing happened to me on my last car. It came from another muddy/dusty pickup truck when they passed me, and some rock came loose on their chassis.

So after buying my 4runner, I also bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003ZJ2HMM which is great/cheap insurance because it will deflect most debris so that they won't hit the windshield. Good investment IMO.

Lifting the car a few inches might also help a little, if you happen to be planning to do that anyway.
