It's been over a month since The Rise of Kyoshi came out and yet I've seen so many Avatar fans who don't know it exists, which is a shame!
I'm sure there are a lot of people who can attest to this, but this is a fantastic official novel and a great addition to the Avatar universe. F.C. Yee, the author, did a solid job at expanding the universe and developing the characters. I highly recommend reading it if you haven't!
If you have read it, join us at /r/Avatar_Kyoshi! The sequel drops July of next year.
(OP is a fan-made poster by me)

The Rise of Kyoshi (2019)
The Shadow of Kyoshi (2020)
They're the best-written Avatar material outside of the main shows imo. They blow the comics out of the water.
SPOILERS
Also known as the Flying Opera Company, Kyoshi's first Team Avatar was composed mostly of remnants of her parents' Daofei (bandit) gang. Members of her team would teach her several unique bending techniques through their short joruney depicted in The Rise of Kyoshi novel.
Rangi - Team's hot-headed firebender from a prominent noble family who is Kyoshi's best friend, swon bodyguard, and eventual love interest. She is the age as Kyoshi (16).
Kirima - Team's sarcastic waterbender, probably in her early 20s.
Lek - Youngest member of the group who is an earthbender from the Si Wong desert.
Lao Ge - Oldest member of the group. An Earthbending...assassin? Spiritual master? who is said to be at least several hundred years old.
Wong - Another earthbender in his 30s. Despite his protruding gut and generally bulky body, he is said to be quite silent

Avatar Kyoshi tangled with the authority and even heads of state (Earth King & the Fire Lord) on multiple occasions. Ironically, however, she would be responsible for establishing the Dai Li, an elite police force that would rule over Ba Sing Se with an iron fist. It would end up becoming one of her greatest regrets.
Kyoshi Novels
>She entered a wide, straight corridor where an ambush waited. Half a dozen new guards barred her path, already in fighting stances. Yun’s captors made haste for another passage at the end of the hall.
>Kyoshi sent forth a snaking torrent of wind from one of her palms that blew past the squad of guardsmen and slammed the exit’s heavy wooden door shut. Yun was close to the floor and was weighed down by iron shackles, so he was saved from the brunt of it, but one of his captors was thrown into the back wall and knocked out. The other one tried to pull the door open by the bronze ring handle, but she kept up the gale-force pressure and it refused to budge.
>The rest of the soldiers attacked. They were the royal elite, undoubtedly selected from the best of the best to serve in the palace.
>But Kyoshi was the Avatar. And she still had a free hand.
>She advanced down the hall through the storm of fireballs, deflecting them at first to the left and right, and then simply catching them once she gauged just how far her raw bending strength surpassed her opponents. She didn’t have to outthink here in this confined space, or possess better technique. She could overwhelm.
>“Call for reinforcements!” one of the guards screamed as his mistimed fire jab dissipated ineffectually against Kyoshi’s chest. But there were only two ways out of the corridor, and she controlled them both. She flicked a single wrist to counterattack.
>The dirty secret of airbending Kyoshi had learned through experience was that it was absolutely devastating in close quarters. Surrounded by hard objects, the gentle art of monks and nuns turned utterly brutal.
>Surrounded by hard objects, the gentle art of monks and nuns turned utterly brutal. She sent wind back and forth with rapid changes of direction. The guards were taken by their midsections, flung into spine-rattling collisions with the walls and ceilings. They collapsed into armored heaps.

>It was a spirit. It had to be. It was a spirit that could pass through walls, a ghost that could float over floors, a beast impervious to blades. Kuji dropped the handle of the useless sword.
>His mother had told him once that invoking the Avatar could safeguard him from evil. He’d known as a child she was making up stories. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t decide to believe them right now. Right now, he believed harder than he believed anything in his life.
>“The Avatar protect me,” he whispered while he could still speak. He fell on his behind and scrambled to the corner of the room, blanketed completely by the spirit’s long shadow. “Yangchen protect me!”
>The spirit woman followed him and lowered her red-and-white face to his. A human would have passed some kind of judgment on Kuji as he cowered like this. The cold disregard in her eyes was worse than any pity or sadistic amusement.
>“Yangchen isn’t here right now,” she said in a rich, commanding voice that would have been beautiful had she not held such clear indifference for his life. “I am.”
