If historical fiction is OK with you Gary Jennings Aztec series is amazing. I couldn't put it down, it begins just before the first landings of cortez and chronicles the events of the downfall of the Empire.
3...2...1...
To distract us from the impending collapse of the Western Alliance and thus world security, here's just a few of the series' HBO could make instead of a Game of Thrones prequel:
GoT-style show about Flavius Aetius and co.
GoT- style show about the shitstorm that followed the death of Theodoric the Great and the breakup of the Ostrogothic WRE-clone.
Same, about the House of Constantine (Constantius II was an absolute bastard, but also really cool).
Screw it, a straight-up Justinian and Theodora show. War, Intrigue, Romance, bubonic plague... what more could you want? (I do request, however, that you make Procopius the actual narrator and one of the main characters).
If you really want a GoT clone, a show about the actual War of the Roses. Hell you'd hardly have to change the names.
To tide things over, a miniseries about the Aztecs based on this fantastic book by Gary Jennings. Turns out there's way more to Mesoamerican history than "oh shit the Spaniards killed us all."
If you want your plot already adapted from history for you, try something based on Coleen McCollough's absolutely epic First Man in Rome series.
So yeah... give Late Antiquity some love already. Or the 15th century or mid-Republican Rome if you really want. But seriously pick one of the Late Antiquity ones.
Did you try "Aztec" ? It's not a "horror" book but historical fiction.
There is some good horror elements though, because of their weird relationship with death (sacrifices, cannibalism, etc) :

>I would like similar themes (does not have to be Aztec) but i would like it based in the jungle. More horror then fantasy, no romance with very little sex. Fiction loosely based on facts but not a must. Could have expeditions to find lost citys, a bit like the movie lost city of oz flick
It will be very hard to find the book you want, at this point, maybe try to write it yourself ;-)
Here is a good read: AZTEC by Gary Jennings www.amazon.com/Aztec-Gary-Jennings/dp/0765317508
Try The Assyrian and its sequel, The Blood Star. They are great.
Could also check out Aztec - it is set in the pre-columbian New World and is also an awesome read.
I remember a great scene involving one of these weapons near the beginning of Garry Jennings' Aztec.
I highly recommend Aztec by Gary Jennings
I thought Aztec by Gary Jennings was pretty epic.
I would also suggest cross-posting this to r/booksuggestions.
Also, I love historical fiction so a few of my recommendations:
