My life got so much easier when I bought this electric nail file. She even giggles when I do it and I never worry about cutting or hurting her.
You are far, far from the only one. In fact, I have never yet met a parent who has made it out of infancy without doing this.
I did the same thing around that age and I was overwhelmed with guilt. I actually had the little piece of skin I cut off and put it in a baggie and tortured myself staring at it (do not recommend!) Here’s the thing: for some reason, their little fingers bleed so much even when the cut is not bad. We put pressure on it, called the pediatrician and got a call from the on call doctor, who said to keep putting pressure, and I didn’t believe them, so we went to urgent care, all for it to stop bleeding right before we checked in. The key is to put heavy pressure on it for at least 10-15 minutes WITHOUT CHECKING. If you pull pressure off the check, restart the clock.
It may not feel this way, but your baby will be fine, the finger will heal normally, and you still get to be an amazing mom. While you’re waiting, order this nail file and never look at those clippers again!
Re scratching, there’s a gentle nail grinder on Amazon that helps keep those nails dull (bc even if they’re short, imo they’re still kinda sharp for a day or two). Has helped us with the scratching all around. If you look up “baby nail trimmer electric” you’ll find a bunch that are all pretty much the same! Amazon link for the one I have
I use these ones:
Baby Nail Clippers 20 In 1 By Royal Angels, Safe Electric Baby Nail Trimmer, Baby Nail File Kit, Additional Replacement Heads, Newborn Toddler Toes and Fingernails, Trim and Polish (Blue) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B077QBJNVM/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_A76NKG3N5NA6NEVMJV19?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Worked well for me. Much easier than trying to cut or manually file their tiny nails. Also can be used for adults since there's different roughness.

We bought an electric nail file from Amazon for our 3 week old and it’s been great. His nails are still soft too and would roll when we tried a manual file.

I never cut my firstborn with the clippers. Baby 2 comes along and I cut her not once but twice!
So I bought one of these . Well worth it to not worry about cutting my baby while trimming her nails.
Baby will forgive you eventually. Give her a moment to forget it.
I’d highly recommend this electric nail trimmer. It can’t cut skin. Wife and I absolutely love it.
An electric nail file! Most people will get tiny scissors or weird nail clippers, but the electric nail file is so nice and easy and very quiet, and if you buy it now your friend and their partner can practice on each other before the baby arrives.
I got this guy and it’s super easy to file his nails down while he’s awake. It doesn’t hurt when it touches his skin so he doesn’t care.
I was so terrified of doing this with our little guy, I picked up this electric nail file and it’s a game changer. Highly recommend and you can’t hurt them with it :)
I was terrifed of this happening, so we bougt this electric file. One of our favorite baby purchases. It has a little light so you can use it while they sleep.
I follow Karrie Locher on Instagram and she recommends this file, and I’ve loved it! Baby doesn’t notice his finger nails being trimmed at all and there is no risk of accidentally clipping him. I often file them while he is nursing, or right after.

I bought this and it’s a total game changer! We do nails weekly and they stay short and smooth with zero fear of cuts.

I can't say enough about the electric baby nail file. It's the gift I plan to get every new parent. It's a soft file that files the nails without hurting tiny fingers.

Ugh I feel you. I poked my 2 month old up the nose with the aspirator today when she started struggling and I didn't have a solid enough hold to keep her from jerking her head back. They let out a cry like their soul hurts and it's like "oh God"
Your post reminds me that I need to get another one of these for my daughter. It was so much easier to trim my son's nails when I had them and I didn't have to worrying about nicking him as he flailed about
Boppy or nursing pillow. I use my Boppy SO MUCH. Also an extra cover.
Portable white noise machine. I love mine and use it way more than I thought I would. Clip it to bassinet, take it in stroller, in car, etc. https://www.target.com/p/yogasleep-hushh-for-baby-portable-sound-machine/-/A-51030371
Royal Angels nail file!!!! If you know you know! So much easier (less scary) than clippers: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077QBJNVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_6CPFM6EPGJ355M282323?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Baby wipes! You go through baby wipes like crazy. Add them to your registry. Personally I didn’t put diapers since didn’t know which kind we were going to use. Some people add a “diaper fund” to their registry though.
Two way zipper PJ’s! Everyone told me this, but it’s so true for night changes, or any time changes. Cotton are great (I like Target, Carter’s, old navy), but can also get more expensive bamboo ones for the softest silkiest baby hugs. I bought more Carter’s and Target ones after baby was born.
Vava night light. A mom friend recommended this after I had my baby and even though I already had been gifted the Hatch (which I love) she sold me on it. It’s AWESOME. I carry it around at night when I need to change or feed. You tap it to change level of light.
Black and white cards or books. Baby loves them for tummy time or literally any time. There’s a book called “Black and White” that is just images and has given my baby hours and hours of entertainment in her first months.
Some other random items: - crib mattress cover / sheets or pack n play sheets. I forgot about these. - a wet/dry bag for holding dirty clothes while out - bottles (Babylist has a bottle sample pack so you can try a variety of popular brands to see what your baby will use.) - Baby wash cloths: https://www.target.com/p/baby-12pk-washcloth-set-cloud-island-8482-white/-/A-79396939
I also recommend using Babylist. It was easy to add from Target, Amazon, and anywhere else in one place. If you added an item from Amazon it often gave the prices for other places which are sometimes cheaper for baby things.
Idk if this is the one you tried but we love it!
This is the one we were gifted, but there are similar cheaper ones out there too! https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Angels-Additional-Replacement-Fingernails/dp/B077QBJNVM
Better yet- get this baby nail file/dremel and do it while milk drunk after eating. Never accidentally clip skin again!
i’m so sorry:( haven’t had my babe yet, but have heard amazing things of these guys and just got mine in. https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Angels-Additional-Replacement-Fingernails/dp/B077QBJNVM
It doesn't work well on soft newborn nails, but when baby is a few months old, try an electric nail file No risk of cuts and it's super easy to use!
This electric nail file is the most practical baby item I have!!! Super easy to use and has several filling options.
Yes! My apologies - I meant to include a link https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B077QBJNVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_fabc_TMMPY7BYFR4BF387MEB6
I think this is the one we have: https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Angels-Additional-Replacement-Fingernails/dp/B077QBJNVM/
It was a gift, so I don't know much about them in general.
Use an electric file from amazon, it’s impossible to cut their skin with it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077QBJNVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_7Z5QTBA418TCQBYT00A7
I did it at 3 months and I felt so bad I bought this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077QBJNVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_kYScFbF9X6RKF
