We are so grateful everyday for Baby Signs! We started signing to Sprog when he was about 6 months and he signed himself for the first time at around 10 months. He had just milk for a very long time but now he regularly uses more, all done, hungry, book, bird, where? and is starting to use help and please
A dear friend is an instructor with the original program and got us this kit which is clear, encouraging and thorough. You can also use free web resources like this visual dictionary on your own.
You will have to use a sign a LOT at first. Always point at an object if you can while making the sign and saying the word. You aren't actually teaching your child ASL, you're just giving him tools to express himself until his oral muscle control catches up to his mental capacities. It is so, so helpful and heads off a lot of frustration and crying.
