I'll one up this, I ran this extension to one of the empty switch plate covers below the climate control. They pop out of the surround and you can cut out a rectangle and pop this in, super clean.
Your best bet would be to buy something like this and cut out that little plate yourself. This may even fit right in that hole. You should be able to wrassle that wire around to the back of your stereo
Maybe an extension cable would be easier on you, like this one. It's as minimal as it gets without having to make one yourself.
I've recorded and taken pictures of everything I could to make a video of how to upgrade the head unit and install a backup camera in a roadster while keeping the Bose Amps and Speakers. It will include how to install this port. But basically all it is is this cable connected to my Pioneer head unit and run through the center console. I just popped the blank out, measured the cable end and dremeled out the hole to fit. Then cable popped in and I hooked it to the radio.
Video of the whole process will be here when it is done. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOtOH3yThzz-1VJWHhIH50g
When I installed Carplay, I put a USB right below the 12v lighter thinking I would plug my phone in there. I just don't like a cord wrapped up there, so I still plug it into the console one. This is what I ordered. If I recall, the cord was long enough to be routed with the carplay wiring. All I really had to do was cut out a hole for this under the lighter.
This is a great mod, and don't let anyone tell you different, but you can do better next time.
They make USB extenders with trim to give you a cleaner look for the frontside ports. Something like this: [link]
Or for a future project, maybe this: [link]
I'm not sure of a great way to fix the jagged edges on the back panel, you could put some edge trim around it, something like this: [link]
Edge trim like that might also look pretty good around the fan hole. That jagged cut at the top on the back panel is rough though, I don't know what to do on that one.
You bet, good luck with your own install!
I looked at my Amazon order history, here's the USB port I used: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078LRSZDB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&c=1
...and if you need blanks for the switch panel, I found them on eBay, item was called "Panel Holder Blanking Plate Standard Size Fit for ARB Carling Rocker Switch". I had to trim them down a little bit to fit the MR2's panel, but just takes a sharp razer blade and some patience to make them pop in place. I'll look forward to seeing how your setup turns out! :D
