Android auto was released in 2015. The car has no idea what the hell you’re plugging into it. I use this in my 2012 fit plugged into the aux 3.5 mm jack and powered from the USB port in the glove box.
Couldn't find the Taotronics one but this looks basically identical:
good luck, the adapter to fit an aftermarket unit alone in is 250 bucks. id go for something more like this bluetooth adapter, i used basically the same thing until i pulled the trigger on the dash kit.
This is the actual one I got after looking into the more in depth options in the link above. To add the aux module just took buying the wiring harness on Amazon, pulling the radio out, and plugging it into the back. You can run the wire wherever you want, so I drilled out one of the switch blanks next to the door locks on the center console and then plug the Bluetooth into there.

Not sure about what you specifically asked about, but what about approaching it from a different angle.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01MSUWCZ0/
Something like this would allow you to have one charging cable to the phone, and play over Bluetooth. Everything can be left in place and just plug in the car charger.
If you have an aux input, just buy this.

I know this isn't what you're asking for, but this module works really and is cheap.

I use something basically Identical to this ( though it's taotronics)
I put the doodle near my stick shift and I can start stop go forward and back and volume up down.
It also has a mic so you can answer calls.
I use this and it works great! Might be worth switching to instead of AUX straight from your phone. It has a microphone on it too so if you mount it on the dash by the steering wheel so you shouldn't have microphone quality issues.

I couldn't find the one I had, but this is similar.

I have this one and it works great. I put the microphone right in front of the center console storage. It's nice having my phone controls right in front of the armrest and the microphone works well there also.

Just get one of these Bluetooth aux adapters.
It requires USB for power, and connects to the aux port. You just gotta pair the device with your phone and it's good to go.
I'm not sure if the included USB cable in the glove box will power it (never used it myself). I have a 12V socket adapter with 3 USB ports since I also charge my phone.
It also has a mic for calls. Not the best but it works.
After doing some research, I think I'm going to try this one:
Ground loop. It's an ugly and annoying sound. If you have another accessory port, you could try it there as it may not be powered through something that's affected, though it might not be as convenient. Or maybe try another manufacturer. I feel like they made ones with ground loop isolators back when I was using them (which, admittedly, was quite a while ago.) Yes - here's one on Amazon with a ground loop isolator included.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MSUWCZ0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
That's the one I have and it works great. Long-press track forward for assistant. It goes on and off with the car if your cigarette lighter plug goes on an off with the car. Mine does in my toyota but every car I've ever had before this they all stayed on.
It's simple for a guest to connect to also, just turn bt off on your phone and the puck automatically goes to pairing mode, guest connects/plays music, have them do a forget device when they're done and once you turn your bt back on you're connected.
This one and the one /u/neongasoline linked (I was about to buy that one, but liked the buttons facing front on mine better) both come with a ground loop isolator, I will make my opinion known that one of those is very necessary if you don't want the hum you get like you do with a phone plugged into aux that is also charging via car-power.
Would something like this work?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSUWCZ0?psc=1
It uses the cigarette lighter power and it has dual USB port which means you could connect to it wirelessly while also being connected to the USB port to charge your phone?
It also turns on when you start the engine so you don't have to worry about turning it off and on manually.
I once had something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/BK01-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Wireless-Streaming/dp/B01MSUWCZ0
It plugged into USB power and into the AUX port on my car, and worked pretty well. The placement of the "puck" part matters, since it is where the microphone is, but otherwise can be set up however you like.
Note that I did not have this specific adapter. I decided to install a Bluetooth head unit (with Apple Car Play and Android Auto) a few years ago. I got the additional piece of equipment that allowed me to keep the steering wheel controls. Even though the small adapter worked well enough, I really enjoy all the additional features and usability of the full modern radio.
You can use the aux cable with this highly recommended. Great audio quality. Infinitely better than the radio ones
This is working great for me.
https://www.amazon.com/BK01-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Wireless-Streaming/dp/B01MSUWCZ0/
I put this kit in my 2008 Corolla. I recently traded it in, for a Ford Maverick, but I had 0 issues during years of daily commutes.
I know exactly what you want and unfortunately there isn't a good solution. You can got a simple bluetooth/aux adaptor like this:https://www.amazon.com/BK01-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Wireless-Streaming/dp/B01MSUWCZ0/ref=sr_1_13?crid=70PPFLJSAV9X&keywords=bluetooth+car+adapter&qid=1650309851&sprefix=bluetooth+car+adapter%2Caps%2C117&sr=8-13. I have one and it work pretty well for what I need but you have to control it through you phone like icanandwillifiwant said.
You can get one of the numerous Android based idrive replacements like this:https://www.amazon.com/XTRONS-Navigation-Qualcomm-Processor-Retained/dp/B08FSSMVJ5/ref=pd_sbs_sccl_7/139-2585526-2120224?pd_rd_w=2mr1T&pf_rd_p=4b6b5072-e9bd-4f30-a3af-a1f5d52978ec&pf_rd_r=DAQ9NM65BCC1CZ6NV4H6&pd_rd_r=db3509a0-1ebe-4369-a6d5-7a00f66cf6dd&pd_rd_wg=6IlIw&pd_rd_i=B08FSSMVJ5&psc=1. I hear these things are buggy and unreliable with poor sound quality.
I've heard good things about the Mr12volt adaptor:https://www.mr12volt.com/products/carplay-interface-bmw-cic. It connects to the MOST fiber audio system and uses the stock idrive screen. The subwoofer output has problems? This is the one I would most likely buy if I were going to keep my E90.
There is also this: https://www.wakaa.us/products/apple-carplay-android-auto-mmi-prime-kit-for-bmw. It kind of looks like a Mr12volt ripoff.
If the aux works, get this; https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MSUWCZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_ER8MWM05M13M07MH8YYM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It allows me to switch tracks on Spotify and answer phone calls.
No worries, I had someone message me awhile back with the same question, but unfortunately the product doesn’t seem to be made anymore.
But this one is pretty much exactly the same thing.
Also this one looks nearly identical to mine but rebranded, except it doesn’t have the ground loop box. I’m not really sure it’s necessary though.
There are some decent bluetooth kits for cars that don't cost much. If you have an aux-in jack, or another one if you don't.
S21 series has better battery life than Pixel 6 (especially S21+ and Ultra). T-Mobile has deals for them, but require Magenta Max (the most expensive plan). Both S21 series and Pixel 6 have better camera quality than OnePlus (iPhone 13 camera quality is also good). I'd say go with S21+ unless a larger size is unappealing, then the standard S21 is also good. Waiting for S22 series is also an option.
Buying a Bluetooth device for your car is way cheaper. I purchased this one over a year ago and have no problems with it.

If you want Bluetooth I highly recommend this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSUWCZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It’s what I use for my 06 aero
This is the easiest, and cheapest thing to do since you already have aux

I see XM radio, but no BT. Look in your owner's manual, it should have a section about the radio. Your car is old enough that I doubt it has it natively.

This dongle will automatically sync when it starts up and gives you hands free phone capability. I tried a couple and this was the one that worked for me.
This works extremely well for a cheap upgrade.
I use this with the USB plugged into the glove compartment. It give me some functionally with forward and back and stop.
If you have an Aux In, maybe check out something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSUWCZ0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_uk5PDbYT9AN5Y
I have a BT to Aux Device with power from an USB charger in the cigarette lighter. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSUWCZ0/
There are car specific ones with 12v constant power like this too. Main unit clips to a vent. Has a call/assistant button. Pause. Skip.
Here is the one I have in mine:
Besign BK01 Bluetooth 4.1 Car Kit... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MSUWCZ0
It has been a great addition... clean sound.
Great advice. I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado that had an "Aux" setting. I had something similar to the Scosche installed in my truck, with an aux plug that I could use. Google your make and model of car and "Aux" and you should be able to find the right thing to order. I had mine installed by the Stereo Man http://ncstereoman.com/info/category/home/.
Also, if you get that installed, I recommend this for plugging into your aux and being able to have bluetooth. Works great in my truck. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MSUWCZ0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Get this and plug it into your USB in the upper glove compartment just for power. That way your 12v outlet in the center remains free for... activities.
Edit. Sorry. Didn’t read your aux port is acting up. This... doesn’t help...
