- What you actually mean is a rheostat, not a potentiometer.
- Rheostats get hot because they dump excess energy as heat. What you actually want is something with a triac in it.
- The easiest way to add a triac is to buy something that is equipped with a standard 120v plug cord and a 120v outlet. They run about $50. Here's one: https://www.amazon.com/Big-Horn-18852-Router-Control/dp/B002S0OJ4S/
- We can't tell you without more information if your pump is ok with being controlled in this way. Most people just use an outdoor timer and use that to turn the pump on/off.
