an algaecide will reduce surface tension, making bugs unable to 'stand' on top of the water and drink - makes it unappealing. Also makes some sink/die apparently bugs don't like that and stay away.

Any of the usually not so great 'cheap linear quat' algaecides will work. This one isn't cheap but is 50% quat (highly concentrated compared to most). Probably any similar type works the same proportional to % ingredient. The ingredent includes BAC - benzyl ammonium chloride at the end of the name. These will not be labeled non-foaming or start with POLY like a Polyquat.
There is another product made just for bugs called something like magic skim or skim master - maybe someone else remembers it. GLB Bug out was similar but i don't think is made anymore.
Some nicer people say you can provide water some distance from the pool, usually add salt, then the bugs will drink that and leave your pool alone...idk
