Yeah. Each piece is separate, so you can stack them however you want. The blue one plugs into the electrical outlet. The others have some sort of metal around the edges, so as long as the edges touch, they make a circuit and light up. It's pretty neat 😃 I bought it years ago from thinkgeek, but they're selling them on Amazon too. I don't know if the brand is the same, but the product looks the same.

Don’t know if this is the exact one, but there are different sellers on amazon
You can always replace the fluorescent tube with a warmer color temp. Its a dorm so its probably a 4000K lamp. Going to a 3000k lamp will help with the warmth.
But beyond that, I think for dorm rooms its best to use lots of small light sources as opposed to say a single cheap floor uplight. But if you are looking for the cheapest and simplest solution, getting a floor lamp is the way to go.
But Like I said, I think lots of individual sources of light make a room feel cozier than one bright lamp.
Get a salt lamp.
Get some command hooks and hang christmas lights.
Put LED tape light behind your TV or run it across the wall for RGB lighting.

I guess it really just depends on your style and the space.
The downside to using lots of different light sources is its a pain to turn them off and on. However, you can get wifi outlets for pretty cheap of Amazon...then you can turn all your stuff off and on with your phone. Or you can program them using the timer function to automatically turn off and on.
