Lot of great suggestions here -- my one addition -- a CORDED power drill. Cordless is nice, but not necessary for most home improvement projects, and corded gives you a lot more drill for your dollar. I recommend http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-BDEDMT-Matrix-Driver/dp/B0094B9BHE

Oh, corded because I am sick of running out of juice at the worst moment.

Yes I could buy several (suspiciously expensive) extra batteries but that didn't sit well with me. It felt manipulative and intended to manufacture a fake brand loyalty.

You have to earn that by making a great drill, not selling batteries that barely hold a charge eventually.

Also, corded have more power available. It's not often, but if I need to make a hole for a deadbolt I have the torque.

At the same time, I wanted the clutch so I don't continually strip screws.

In case anyone is in a similar spot, I went with a Bondage & Domination (B&D 🙂) corded drill with clutch.

i know you said that you wanted used tools, but if you are looking for a good value and want a range of powertools, there is a modular tool set that combines a few essential tools into one...basically there are different heads that pop on and off of a drill body....apparently you could get the drill which starts the kit and you can add heads as you go. the drill, a trim saw, and a jigsaw goes for around 100$, maybe cheaper at the big boxes...could be a way to expand your tool set at your own pace.. http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-BDEDMT-Matrix-Driver/dp/B0094B9BHE
