Mine is semi-private. I've put tiles from my unit to where I hang laundry. My wife planted a horrific ivy that the neighbors kill with a vengeance. I'm responsible for mowing the grass (evidently), and do so with something like this:

I've left old appliances on the yard for years. Neighbors either cut their lawns dutifully like me, once a year (looks like shit), or removed the grass entirely plus plant trees (looks like shit).
Maintenance people come through once in a blue moon, and the bushes that act like a fence get done by the building association once every two years. There are rules, but it seems to be a 'as long as nobody cares or complains, do whatever you want.' The rulebook has a picture of exactly how big of a dog you can have (length and height to the cm: from paw to ear tip and nose to tail tip).
Retired people and housewives who are busybodies are probably the only ones who will care about anything.
I always carry my weed whacker in my truck along with my gear. It has a lithium battery and can clear a nice chuck to hunt on.
