How do you recommend differentiating the two issues? Do you recommend buying a thermal leak detector, or are those pretty useless?
I tried that with an infrared thermometer like this one. It showed uniformity where there should be uniformity. ie: the walls were the same (within 1 degree) and the floor was uniform as well. I don't think there are any leaks, but we're just lacking a proper 'winterization' somewhere.
EcoThrift might, they don't list what they have unless you have an account ($9 a month). https://eco-thrift.com/tool-lending-library/
The library does not, at least I couldn't find one a few weeks ago or just a moment ago when I went looking through the 'thing' library. Closest I saw was a 'draft check' but I don't think it's a camera, just a thermometer. It says "Black + Decker thermal leak detector with instructions" and just Googling that comes back with this: https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-TLD100-Thermal-Detector/dp/B0044R87BE
This is the $25 alternative: https://smile.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-TLD100-Thermal-Detector/dp/B0044R87BE/ref=sr_1_2?crid=289LUK0TIEQ1H&keywords=black+and+decker+thermal&qid=1640013023&s=hi&sprefix=black+and+decker+thermal%2Ctools%2C76&sr=1-2
Basically, what it does is you measure the temperature of your home at one spot, and you scan around looking at different temperatures in different places. It does the job just as well as a thermal imaging camera at literally 1/10th of the price.
get something like this to use against your windows & doors to see exactly where your air leaks are.
Theres also something like this: https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-TLD100-Thermal-Detector/dp/B0044R87BE/ref=sr_1_18?dchild=1&keywords=thermal+camera&qid=1611859198&sr=8-18
This is a really neat and cheap one: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-TLD100-Thermal-Detector/dp/B0044R87BE/
It projects a light (blue/red) depending on the temperature of the surface you're pointing it at (and $26).
Why don't you know what CPU temps are?
Edit: Did some Googling to find out about this problem with the BIOS updates, weird. Maybe this could finally be the excuse to myself to buy an IR thermometer
Get one of these, they are awesome.
Rather the focusing on how much heat a house should lose (which nobody can answer), instead focus on where your house is losing heat
Get an infrared thermal leak detector like this..
Then you can go round your house and see where heat is draining away. It's usually via window frames, doors and external walls. But you may also see a drop in temp in some ceiling spots, which can help identify insulation problems
