I use and recommend the Black Diamond Storm headlamp for around $40.
Waterproof. Really. It uses 4-AAA batteries, is very slim, and has 3 light selections. There's a very bright high-beam, white LEDs for close-up work, and red LEDs. All settings can be dimmed, and strobe is available for the high-beam and red settings, all selected with just one button.
