That’s awesome! I have a three year old American Pitbull Terrier; he is absolutely my world! Here are some pictures of course.
I feed mine Blue Buffalo Life Protection. The main thing is to make sure the food you’re buying is grain free. Brands like Gravy Train and Iam’s are essentially fast food for dogs. It’s not good for them at all. I have also used Science Diet, which a lot of veterinarians recommend, but it’s only available to purchase online on Amazon or any pet stores. I switched to Blue Buffalo simply because I could find it easier.
I would recommend asking the rescue that you’re working with what brand dog food they have been feeding them. If you decide you want to switch dog foods, you’ll want to taper down the amount of old dog food versus new dog food instead of just doing a hard switch. So feed them 75% old food, 25% new food for 3 to 4 days. The next 3 to 4 days you do 50% old food and 50% new food, for 3 to 4 days after that feed them 25% old food and 75% new food. And after that you’re golden! If you tried to switch food in one day you would wind up with a puppy with a very upset stomach (in most cases).
As for leashes and collars and harnesses, I would strongly advise against a retractable leash. In my experience, teaching your dog to walk closely next to you is much safer. Plus people and their prejudices get freaked out when they see a dog on a 15 foot lead.
Walking with a harness is the best option. If you use just a collar and your dog pulls on the leash, all the pressure is applied to its neck. Whereas a harness will distribute the pressure across the dog’s chest and shoulders. Not only is that more comfortable for the dog, but you have better control. As a former dog walker, I can attest to that.
I personally have a printed collar for my dog, but that’s because he’s a quiet and sneaky little shit who tends to take himself on a walk around the neighborhood if a door is left open. Another little fix to that problem was getting him extra dog tags so that he kind of jingles when he walks so we have a better sense for where he is. On that note, please please please make sure to get your baby micro chipped and that you get him or her dog tags.
Feel free to throw any other questions my way! I worked as a dog sitter, walker, and in a doggy daycare for a long time, so I know a few things lol.
