When I was looking I went to the aforementioned r/dashcam and up picked up a BlueSkySea 4K 4K
I only chose the front facing camera because I don’t want to be on video all the time. I’ve been pretty happy with it.
One thing to note - I didn’t install the app, because I didn’t trust the privacy of it. I simply take the SD card and download it manually if I need the video.
Here's the standalone camera without the rear cam included. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LTWG5LG/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_dl_R434GC0VNWQ4B29K7BHE?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Mine was supposed to come today but was delayed. If you search B4K on this sub it has positive reviews.
The only thing this camera is lacking is rear camera capability. If you don’t want a rear camera in your car go with Nexar. In my personal vehicle I have this camera. It’s reliable but the mobile app is slow and there is no way to export videos easily. Even plugging the memory card into my laptop to download clips that I want to share is a hassle because the file format is not supported anywhere so I have to convert the video file to a different format before I’d be able to post it anywhere.

This is the one I got. It’s 4k 30fps. I bought the rear cam as well, I just haven’t installed it yet.
Neighbors hit our parked car, doorbell cam got it but dashcam did not record it. We got the car 5 days ago. Parking was set to on motion on it. Any suggestions are welcome. this is the model of dashcam.

Reasonably priced, decent picture, phone app for viewing. They also offer a rear add on camera. You will need an SD card to go with it.
Thank you for your answer! Is this it?
And I need the hardwire kit for it, but it looks like they took it down? Can you recommend a link for a hardwire kit for the B4k, please?

> Is there anything I'm missing?
Dash cam + Hardwire kit + Micro SD card = Cost
Not all dash cams are made the same, they all have quirks that you should learn about and decide if you want to live with or not.
All Micro SD cards fail at some point, limited number of read/write/rewrite cycles. High Endurance/Endurance cards last longer, MLC based cards. TLC based cards do not last as long, and are not necessarily rated for dash cam use.
All dash cams require maintenance: Checking for broken/missing files every 30-45 days; Formatting every 30-45 days; Checking firmware updates every 30-45 days; and ect.
Not all dash cams are good. Not all hardwire kits are good.
> Just looking for a good all-rounder that has features ideal for a new driver. I've seen the A129 Duo get recommended a lot here, is that worth getting?
A129 Plus Duo is recommended a lot. A129 Duo is less recommended.
Anyways, it depends what you want in a dash cam.
B4K ($120 USD) + Rear Cam ($25 USD) - This is likely the cheapest option. Excellent build quality, Good/Fair video quality, Excellent parking mode.
Thinkware FA200 ($130-180 USD w/ a bundle) - At $130 USD it is an excellent option, at $180 it is over priced. Excellent build quality, Good/Fair video quality, Excellent parking mode.
Viofo A129 Plus Duo ($142-176 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent video quality, Good parking mode. - Likely the best video quality option in 2 Channel dash cams. Parking mode is slightly flawed at this time. Parking mode slightly flawed at the moment, firmware updates to fix this issue are pending.
BlackVue DR590 ($216-240 USD) - Excellent build quality, Good/Fair video quality, Excellent parking mode. BlackVue does a lot of things right, where others do it slightly wrong. BlackVue WiFi/Cellphone - done correctly, everyone else is disappointing in comparison. - BlackVue is like an IPOD in a sea of Zunes. However Good/Fair video quality is not Excellent video quality.
A129 Plus Duo - If you like video quality.
B4K - If you like the price.
BlackVue - If you want a dash cam that works the way you think it should vs working around everything backwards. BlackVue it is like an IPOD, and everyone else is a Zune.
> I'd like a front/rear camera.
> One that I am able to get the recordings as soon as possible from my mobile.
WiFi/Cellphone app is very disappointing.
> My car is brand new and I am looking for extra protection while driving and when the car is parked. I have read there is cameras that record 24/7 or with motion sensor but might drain car battery?
Parking mode = Dash cam is on, but only writes to the Micro SD card if G sensor (Hits/Bumps) or Motion sensor (Movement in front of camera lens) are activated. (To save energy.)
Parking mode reduces battery use. Low Voltage Cut Off Feature protects your battery.
> Is there another alternative to still get everything I'm looking for and not drain my car battery?
($200-300 USD) External Heat Rated Battery Pack
DIY - Deep cycle battery + Battery cage + 12v trickle charger to ignition only fuse + hardwire kit + Dash cam 2 channel + Micro SD card = Cost
Or just hardwire it to the fuse box and use your battery like normal people.
> Something like a Ring Spotlight camera but for my car
Weather proof IP/Security camera from your house/place of work.

I have this one. I really like it so far. Also has an option to add a rear camera.
Here's what I ended up with: https://www.amazon.com/Blueskysea-Dashboard-Recorder-170%C2%B0Wide-Detection/dp/B08LTWG5LG
I screwed up the order there, but this is what I bought. There is also a touch screen, newer version out that's slightly lower profile.
https://www.amazon.com/Blueskysea-Dashboard-Recorder-170%C2%B0Wide-Detection/dp/B08LTWG5LG
The under $100 ones aren't the greatest, but if you can stretch your budget a bit, the B4K is a solid choice at about $115.
I've had an A129 Plus Duo for several years, and other Viofo cameras before it. I really like the Plus Duo and think it's a great buy. I've tried the Pro and have some family members who still use it. The Pro videos when the car is stationary are certainly crisp, but when the car is moving I find that motion blur makes the video quality not much different from the Plus.
>want a camera that is clear enough to read license plates should an incident occur
This is hit or miss. Most consumer-level dashcams can get license plates under good conditions, but motion, low light, dirty windshield, and many other factors can make license plates unreadable. This will be similar across most brands and models. Best thing you can do is make sure your camera is set to record at it's max resolution and max FPS. I've found that 1080P 60FPS catches license plates much clearer than 1440P 30 FPS. For the Plus Duo, just make sure you update to the most recent firmware and you'll be able to do 1440P 60 FPS in the front camera.
>and hoping to have helpful footage is something were to happen parked at night somewhere
It will film front and rear, but damage from the side might be tough to see. The main thing parking mode might help with damage-wise is proving to your insurance you didn't damage the car yourself. Unless you catch the other car's license plate and driver face it's unlikely anything else would come of the footage.
>I am of the understanding that the PRO has better daylight recording, but PLUS has better night recording
I'm not familiar with this claim, but both cameras have ok night recording.
>I see lots of talk of the PRO overheating and performance suffering, does the PLUS suffer as well?
The Pro used to overheat, especially in parking mode. Viofo fixed it with a firmware update a while back, but you still see complaints even nowadays (though I wonder how many of then haven't updated their firmware). My Plus never overheats, and it sits in the desert sun all day fairly frequently. I generally recommend Viofo brand over others when hot climate is a concern.
>I also see that some people have issues with Viofo cams inconveniently erasing "locked/saved" footage with new footage, is there a trick to preventing that?
I've never had this issue with any of my Viofo's, nor any of them in my friends' and family's vehicles. You should make sure to get a good quality SD card though; the subreddit sidebar has good suggestions. Speaking of the sidebar, you'll need a hardwire kit to use parking mode. The subreddit sidebar can help you there too.
>Is the main difference between them 2k vs 4k resolution of forward camera?
In my experiences yes, and, the price. I don't know specific hardware differences off the top of my head, but most people get the Pro because they want 4K resolution.
>I currently see This Blueskysea linked in the sidebar for $116, but seems it does not have rear camera, is that right?
Looking at that listing, I believe you are correct. But, you can buy the rear camera sold separately. B4K is a solid camera. I like Viofo more for the shape, but B4K definitely wins in the price category.
>And i see This Blueskysea camera on sale for $89, with rear camera, but does not have GPS, is that right? If so, how does this compare to the Viofo, at half the price? I am unsure how important GPS should be for me.
I'm not as familiar with this one. Just taking a look at the listing, I'd buy B4K over this one because adhesive plates are more reliable than suction cup mounts. B4K is also very popular and widely accepted; I've not heard about B08 much, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great camera too. The best camera is one that runs and fits your budget and needs.
We're happy to help here, it's just that this question gets asked 10x a day and it gets tiring that people don't bother to search.
As mentioned, the cheapest dashcam while still being decent will be Blueseaksy.
Camera: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08LTWG5LG
Optional rear cam: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B6ZVL6W
Viofo A129 Duo is another solid choice, but is a few $ more.
If you want best quality, look to Blackvue and Thinkware, but they have a price $$$ to match.
For reference, everything from /ref= to the end of the URL is just for tracking and is not needed to be able to click the link:
I got this model and installed it myself. I haven't made the wires pretty yet, mostly because I drive by myself 90% of the time, but it was very easy to do.
Front facing cam and rear facing cam. It would cost $155 (before sales tax) to purchase both right now.
VIOFO has a decent quality reputation, I like mine but can't talk to heat performance.
for 4k, have you looked at Blueskysea?

B4K ($120 USD) + Rear Cam ($30 USD) - This is likely the cheapest option. Excellent build quality, Good/Fair video quality, Excellent parking mode.

Then you start getting into premium dash cams:
BlackVue = King of Cloud dash cams.
Thinkware = Far weaker Cloud dash cams.
Street Guardian = No cloud, but extreme heat survival. - So BlackVue/BlackSys/Thinkware/VIOFO/BlueSkySea/Street GuardianEct are all rated similarly in #s for heat survival. However, Street Guardian is setup for the Australian heat, it isn't a guarantee of anything, but at least you tried the best.
>my budget is around 150$ i can do more if it worth the price.
Have a look at B4K dash cam. It runs a deal price $100 now on amz; and plus $25 for an optional rear cam!

Thinkware FA200 ($150-180 USD w/ a bundle)
Viofo A129 Plus Duo ($176 USD)
BlackVue DR590 ($240 USD)
The 3 main features that dash cams should be rated on are:
Build quality - Largely past dash cams, and reputation.
Video quality - Google Dash cam name + Sample footage. Look for flaws. Try to read plates in: Day/Night/Shadow, in motion, not directly in front, ect.
Parking mode - Automatic Engage/Disengage when parked, and How does it engage? Buffered or Not Buffered? Low Voltage Cut off Feature: Part of the hardwire kit/Built in? Digital/Analog? 11.6v? 11.8v? 12.0v? 12.2v? 12.4v? - Rate it Excellent -> Good -> Fair -> Bad.
How these are determined is difficult to do and takes time to acquire knowledge on.
Everything else is a bell and whistle and neither makes a bad dash cam good, nor a good dash cam bad.
Every dash cam has minor quirks, it is about learning about them, and living with them. Also every manufacturer has minor quirks, you have to learn and live with them too.
Picking a dash cam largely based off of price = picking a bad dash cam.
> The vertical rear window might be an issue for some setups I don't know thought it would be good to ask.
The following dash cams should do fine with it:
Thinkware FA200 ($150-180 USD w/ a bundle)
Viofo A129 Plus Duo ($176 USD)
BlackVue DR590 ($240 USD)
Street Guardian SG9663DC ($275 USD)
It really depends what you want in a dash cam.
B4K - Price
Thinkware - A good deal at 150 USD, not so much at 180 USD.
VIOFO - Probably the best video quality dash cam in a 2 channel format.
BlackVue - They do WiFi/cellphone app correctly. Everyone else is buggy/annoying.
Street Guardian - Extreme heat conditions.
All about have the same build quality. You should google dash cam name + footage sample - and look for flaws in day/night/shadow footage to judge video quality yourself.
Parking mode is about the same, with some strengths and weaknesses of each manufacturer/current firmware.
