Also, I don't have a book exactly to recommend, but I've read a book (that I cannot remember) on what exactly gunshots, knives, and weapons do.
Overall it was to prevent jarring inconsistencies like having someone play Russian Roulette with a Glock or having someone blow across the room while being shot with a bird rifle.
But... there are books at Amazon, that might give you ideas and you can just decide what you like. A search found this. I haven't read it, so I can't speak for it's usefulness. Depending on the realism you want, it may give you a idea of how much you want to stretch something. Good luck. :) The world needs more slasher films.
