Regular stretching also helped, as others have stated. The one that seems to help me the most is sitting on my butt touching my toes. Legs straight with feet together, pull tows towards you and hold, and push toes away and hold. I do that with my toes together, toes apart with heels together (make a V), and toes together with heals apart.
I hate shin splints, and lived with them for too long. Now that I do this, I only have issues if I forget to wear the compression sleeves or don't take my time breaking in new basketball shoes.
