My friends and I use this light. I haven't had it too long so I can't comment on longevity, but it's plenty bright, decent weight, good price, easy to attach. It comes with a rear safety light and a helmet 'mount'. The mount is attached with basic straps around your helmet, it's nothing too special and kind of requires a flat-ish spot on your helmet to stay steady. I'd suggest buying one for your handlebars and trying it on your helmet. If it holds tight on your helmet you can grab a second one (you can ride safely with one light, but two is awesome). Also the owner is very responsive and helpful. I had a slight issue with my charger and he sent me a new one for free.
lol, so many paranoid people here.
Many places absolutely mandate a headlight, often as early as dusk. So there's that consideration, too.
You can find some very good lights, for not too much money, on Amazon.
The one I mount is 1200 lumens (really bright), and the battery lasts easily an entire night, sometimes more. (There's a small trickle from the battery pack to the light unit itself, even when it's off, though - so I decouple them when the light isn't in use.) You can find it on Amazon for about fifty dollars.
I use one of these, usually on medium, which would be about 500 or 600 lumens, and aim it about 15-20ft ahead of the bike. It's got a tight beam pattern, and doesn't blind other riders.
edit: most of what everyone else says is dead on. Please don't be that ass with the flasher (every headlight that I've ever looked at puts out maximum lumens on flashing mode, and will blind other riders.) Point them where you want to see in order to avoid obstacles - not at the sky or straight ahead. I have a long history of doing endurance mountain bike races, so if you ever want to discuss real lights for seeing in the dark (race speeds! AT NIGHT! IN THE WOODS!) Let me know.
I just ordered this bright eyes one: http://www.amazon.com/Bright-Eyes-Rechargeable-Headlight-taillight/dp/B00GJZ015Y?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00
A guy I work with has one and loves it. The bright eyes brand is supposed to have much better warranty and support than other similar knockoff brands. The battery on it is supposed to be better as well.
Only thing is he said you probably need a diffuser as the beam is pretty narrow as it. His came with a diffuser, even though the listing doesn't say it does. I'm waiting for mine to be delivered before I order one.
Not OP, just taking a guess:
1) Battery for an electric motor (see the large hub on the rear wheel and the mentions of "test ride" "beta" and "start-up").
2) Display/Controller for the motor or a CREE headlight.
3) Because Troll sounds cooler and he's very happy with it (this last one is pure speculation).
I thought I'd ask this here instead of opening another thread..yes, I've read all the other night riding threads.
I want to try out night riding for the first time. I was thinking of getting 2 of these lights off Amazon ($80). One mounted to the handlebar, one mounted on my head. Do you think this will be enough lumens for most night rides (1-2 hours probably)?
Thanks.
Sure! Honestly, I don't see any headlights that I'd buy but the Cygilite 2W is pretty good. For a headlight you could do really well getting a high lumen light from Amazon. I use a rechargeable one that I've used for over a year now and it works great. Similar to this one.
I have like 4 of these. They're super bright and battery lasts a long time. You can find them on eBay every now and then for $20.
Edit: A year ago I switched to a USB version of the light above. I got mine on eBay for $12, but can be found here for around the same price. I use it with a USB power bank, like this. I just put the battery pack in my frame bag. I can charge my phone and light my path at the same time if I want. It's really a great setup!
I don't regularly ride the BG but I have ridden the dark sections at night. I run a Light & Motion Viz360 on my helmet and a $35 Chinese LED from Amazon on my handlebars.
Whatever you run pay attention to where the beams are aimed down so they are illuminating the trail and not blinding oncoming traffic. Flashing/blinking/strobing headlights are not a legal option for bicycles in Washington. Only red LED taillights are allowed to blink and you still have to have a rear facing red reflector after dark.
I use this on my handlebars and this on my helmet. I also use this diffuser on my handlebar light, but not on my helmet light.
Overall it's pretty decent for the price. If I was able to spend a lot more on this, I would, but what I have does work. I haven't been on any long night rides yet, but I think I can easily get a couple hours out of this setup.

Bright. Battery lasts about an hour, good beam spread , light up signs several blocks away too.

I have this, and it can't be beat in the price range.

I've had one of these for 1.5 years and it works great. I pair it with another headlight on my helmet and it's plenty for riding singletrack at night on my MTB.
Nope. I already bought this, so far I'm very happy with it.

One will go on your helmet with this kit: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004QOVA00
Other goes on your handlebar, get a wide angle lens for it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004WLCLQY
Should be around $100 total.
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GJZ015Y/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's very bright, good battery life, and gives you enough light to see, not just to be seen.
Disclaimer: I havent tried this one. A friend uses it for the rear and it works.
That kit has a lever that goes on your brake. When the brake is engaged it turns the rear brake on. Some people are annoyed by the siren and simply disconnect it.
For the front I use this rechargeable battery. Its plenty bright and if you get the diffusers it spreads the beam nice and wide.
I'm pretty impressed with this for the price. Can also be used as a headlamp when not cycling.

I actually have the Bright Eyes brand lights from Amazon, mostly because of the better reviews.
Will these be the only handful of lights you test? Personally, I'm interested in seeing tests done for lights from Dinotte (expensive I know), Gloworm, and the 2x Cree LED lights (like Magicshine 880 L2 or similar).
2nd the wide angle on bars, helps reduce the effect turning has on where the light goes.
