some of those are stupid expensive outside the US though, brinks 40mm in USA $7 on amazon uk £40 ($50)
You could get the sparrows progressive lock set shipped from canada for about the same.
edit: I think OP's USA based but it might help others to know
Does it look like this
If so it is a 4 pin lock 1 or 2 spools whixh could be your holdup. Also, handmade tools aren't always as good as bought ones if you are inexperienced.
Do you have a photo of your set?
My favorite Brinks is the 40 mm laminated padlock. It has at least one spool and good feedback. One of mine feels like it has two spools.
Cool, maybe I will give it another go. I heard it works on the Master 140 but that is so easy to open it isn't worth fussing around.
Would it work on this brinks do you think?
A good lock to start learning spools on is actually a Brinks 40mm laminated padlock. They are 4 pin locks and they can have one or two spools in them. It's easily noticeable when you are on a spool and its clear to see the counter rotation on them as well. Plus since they are 4 pin it's a little easier to start with.
Here is an amazon link.. I'll try to find somewhere cheaper if possible. Not too sure about in AUS though but I'll see if I can find anything

I believe it is a 4 pin with 1 spool. Is it pretty similar to this
