Just paperwork... I'd say get a laser printer. Slightly more expensive to start but you'll save a lot with toners vs ink.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00LEA5EHO is a good start. I believe the one labeled 'printer only' comes with a starter toner as well (700 pg).
You can get 3rd party toner for like $15 each too - supposedly 2600 pg but take it with a grain of salt. Also output quality may not be as good as the original, but shouldn't matter for random paperwork here and there.
If you ever desire to upgrade, get a lazer printer! I have a lot of philosophy readings I print out, and it was honestly game changer for highlighting, printing, and of course, no smudging! https://www.amazon.ca/Brother-HL-L2320D-Monochrome-Printer-Printing/dp/B00LEA5EHO is the one I got
I've had my Brother b&w printer for 10+ years and never had a single problem. I don't know if its the exact same model but it looks exactly like this one https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2320D-Mono-Laser-Printer/dp/B00LEA5EHO/ref=sr_1_7?crid=HX6MUBITD7DK&dchild=1&keywords=brother%2Blaser%2Bprinter&qid=1632961329&s=office-products&sprefix=brother%2Blas%2Coffice-products%2C240&a...
I have a Brother HL-L2320D and I love it. It's black and white, but does double-sided printing. I got mine refurbished for $50 from Staples last summer. I can't recommend this printer enough.
What features do you need? If printing black and white single sided A4/letter/legal size, attached to a computer is all you need, something like this is fine http://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L2320D-Mono-Laser-Printer/dp/B00LEA5EHO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456123998&sr=8-1&keywords=brother+mono+laser
Smaller & cheaper:

A little larger, but adds copier:

I know you think you want a color inkjet of some sort.
You don't.
The toner cartridge that ships with either of those two laser printers will last you all 4-5 years of college.
You'll probably spend nearly $100/year replacing ink cartridges (because they dry out every summer).
If you buy a model with WiFi capabilities, you're almost guaranteed to be required to turn that feature off while you live on campus.
So, buy a nice long 15' USB cable instead.
This.
Personally, my strategy with printers is:
For my own personal usage at home, I bought this refurbished for less than $80.
It's the best possible setup for the worst possible category of electronic devices I've ever used in the last 20 years.
What the fuck?
Buy the cheap ass refills that do ~800-1000 pages each depending on the model
I printed off two textbooks and still had toner left over in one cartridge.
This Brother would be a good option. Currently $136 CAD on Amazon:
Just want to piggyback here and say that if you're in the market for a light-duty Brother printer, you can easily get them for less than Amazon is selling if you do some searching. I got mine for $70 (after tax + shipping) from Fry's a couple years ago. A similar model is $70 at Staples at the moment. Amazon has it pretty cheap, too.
I print maybe 100 sheets a year, and the need is sporadic, so this type of printer is perfect.
