I HIGHLY recommend this one. Had one similar to OPs, I like this one much better. I cut it a little long so it's an easy slip over the head and he wears it with his normal collar when needed. Rechargeable vs a watch battery too! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CCP1V3U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_C-kmFb7A37V47
If your dog is on the medium /large side you need this. I should have gotten it years ago.
Also a light up collar you can slip on when needed.
Spill proof bowl is a must have for me as my guy is a frequent drinker. Collapsible water bowl for when you're in a shop drivers lounge, motel etc. My main water bowl doesn't leave the truck.
Water carriers with seperate spigot caps (no longer available, they redesigned the stock caps) that I refill at Walmart for $0.37/gallon have slowly paid for themselves. Dog and I drink LOTS of water. This also cuts down on waste and space used in the truck. Roll up when empty. I carry 4 of these and refill every week to 10 days. 4 so I don't run short if I haven't made a Walmart run.
Also keep a dog first aid kit with gauze, vet wrap, antiseptic ointment.
Poop cleanup bags, with a dispenser on your leash. This one is soft and doesn't dangle. Holds 2 rolls.
Micro chip your dog. Carry extra leashes. I LOVE these tags as they don't dangle.
Scan the shot records and keep it on your phone where you know where to find it.
As for lifestyle, the amount of stopping during the day depends on the dog. As my old dog gets older I have to stop more. Some places like grocery warehouses won't allow dogs out on the property so try to make a quick stop before you get there if you're not sure. I've asked at places I was sure would be a NO and been told it was fine. Always clean up after your dog.
Many bars and restaurants have dog friendly outdoor patios, some even allow dogs inside. Call and ask. Make sure your dog knows how to behave and is under your control so you don't ruin it for those of us with lazy dogs who just lay under the table and wait for food to be handed down!
My guy is over 14 and won't be riding much longer. He's had 750,000 miles roll by under him and has claimed all the lower 48 and 5 provinces of Canada as his own. No regrets, other than not getting the damn steps YEARS AGO.
Posted thisbhigher too: consider this one. I had one like OPs and got this as a gift. My husband and I both like it so much better. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CCP1V3U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_C-kmFb7A37V47
