Do you treat with a topical for fleas/ticks? Sometimes this helps, especially if applied within a previous few weeks. Aside from that, the other insects I see flying around my dogs while we're outside (midwest) are just harmless gnats that are going for moisture around their eyes or privates, or just generally irritating. We tend to try not to be out in the evenings, that being prime mosquito hour. There's this stuff called Buggins that I happily discovered earlier this spring repels those awful blackflies, and it has all natural ingredients that can be used on dogs. Try to apply to areas that your dog is not able to lick, though! Spray your hand and dab around her head, don't spray directly. DEET based sprays for humans are not good for dogs. I also found this stuff, which seems to have pretty positive reviews, but have not tried myself. Here's another page with some good info, and a homemade recipe too.
