Everyone who exercises should read this book. Basically when you "burn" calories, you're generally not increasing the number of calories your body is consuming in a day unless the amount of exercise you're doing is abnormal. If you run 4 miles a day every day, your body adjusts and no longer burns extra calories. But your exercising so your muscles do need fuel. This means it's even more important to only eat nutrient dense food when you're exercising so you can refuel without overeating.
This author's tag line is "There's no way to earn the doughnut" which basically means exercise does not give you permission to eat junk food. It paradoxically might make junk food even worse for you.
Exercise is really important for you health. But for your weight, it only has a marginal impact compared to your diet. Some research indicates that it's almost completely irrelevant

I agree with the first half of what you said but if it was as simple as calories in calories out then practically everyone would be the size they want. People burn about 2,000 calories a day. Period.
