Yeah, replaced the cable, put it on 1.4. It only stopped completely when I turned off gsync, otherwise it was terrible. Black screen for a few seconds at a time several times per minute. Maybe the new cable is still bad too, but it's this one and it should be fne
VESA cables go through a series of tests to make sure they're compliant. Here's a cheap one.
Try setting it to 1.1 first and then 1.4. Also try switching between Nvidia settings, I had to switch to a random setting and then back to 144hz and the RGB showed. If that doesn't work, and if you're using the stock cable, try buying a VESA certified 1.4 cable.

Not sure if this helps, but in the past when I was looking into display issues, I was told to make sure the DP cable was VESA ceritified, I got something similar to this:

Not sure whether there is a VESA certified HDMI cable, did a quick google not seen any ....
Always look for VESA certified cables. One of the examples would be as below :
