That din-1/8th cable isn't a programming cable it's for running echolink/VOIP. You still need the din to DB-9 cable for programming. Before I got my Toughbook I was using a cheap USB converter to program my D710 using Chirp. Just make sure you get a good one. I think you can use a common usb to RS232 [DB9] adapter and make your own RJ45 to DB9 like the correct one from here with the length you require...
just make sure you are using the correct RJ45 to serial wiring as I found many combinations, but it seems the common ones are in the previous link...
