Wires are all under the desk. There is a power strip mounted to the back of the desk which is where the monitors/dock/desk/etc all plug in.
It's spendy, but I 100% recommend it. Haven't had a single issue with it, and it has pretty much every port you need. If you want to run two or more monitors you would need a USB-C to DP or HDMI cord/adapter, unless you have a USB-C monitor. That's really the only downside I can see someone having.
anyone use this dock? CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock
just ordered one to power my 2 monitors & for my ethernet connection/maybe soundbar so i dont have so many cables plugged into my laptop. (16" MacBook pro)
best rated one i found
Have the LS50WII's connected to a MacMini via a CalDigit hub that has optical connection. My primary sources are Plexamp and Qubuz clients. While I cannot control the volume with the Mac, the client software has volume controls. There is no lag with this setup. There are several hubs out there that have optical out.

I use this one as it was recommended by a lot of musicians/content creators https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07CZPV8DF/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=15121&creative=330641&creativeASIN=B07CZPV8DF&linkCode=as2&tag=barrydanielmu-20&linkId=a1b143b07951a379e72fb7aa6d325d14
I have no complaints (other than the price).
I believe you are talking about the MBP 13 M1 in 2020? Regarding to "dual displayport", if you are thinking about two external monitors for this model, then it is not possible. This model does not support two external monitors no matter what dock you use.
> 4) Power button that can turn the connected computer on while in clamshell
I did not aware any dock for M1 mac could do this...
And in general, Caldigit is the only brand I see could offer so many ports and work with M1 macbook hassle free. https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF
The one I use costs $300, but works great for me.
The dock is the Caldigit TS3+
I can’t speak from personal experience, but everything I’ve read points to CalDigit being a solid brand and specifically the TS3+ dock having the least amount of issues with M1 devices. I read a lot of reddit threads about it. It’s sold out everywhere but Amazon let’s you get it back ordered. I just ordered one of the back orders.
I have a 13in MBP 2020.
Have 2 monitors, hard-wired internet, webcam, speakers, etc. hooked up to a docking station. I use the CalDigit docking station. Works great.. This may not be the exact model I have but it looks similar to this.
https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF
I’ve used this every day for over a year now and never had a single problem. It’s expensive but to solve my constant connection issues with my monitor it has been 100% worth it.

CalDigit Ts3 Plus
Look at the Caldigit TS3 + LINK on Amazon. Probably not what you want, but it is good reference product. I'm not a docking station fan, I discovered this model from work. I haven't bought one yet. But I'm on the cusp. Also, had a great experience with CalDigit customer support. Power brick died, and I did chat, got the RMA and sent it in, got a new power brick without hassle.

I’ve only tested in WoW, it’s pretty much all I play. But when I first started WoW after I got the laptop, it auto chose the AMD.
Thanks :) I'm using a Caldigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt dock for the main vertical display and a whole host of USB & audio devices.
The one thing I haven't been able to figure out is running both displays off the TS3 Plus and just the t480's Thunderbolt port. Even though the TS3 Plus has another Thunderbolt 3 port, 2 USB-C ports, and a Displayport which should all theoretically support displays - I was unable to find a combination that allowed for both displays to run through the TS3's single thunderbolt cable to the t480. (One display is FHD, the other not-even that.)
Most of the time the second, horizontal display is hooked up to a game console anyways, so it doesn't always even pose an issue - but when I do want it hooked up to the t480 I just run a USB-C > HDMI cable from the t480's second USB-C port and it works just fine.
Not sure why exactly the Thunderbolt port on its own can't handle that sort of connection - possibly something about how many PCIe lanes are assigned to it. Thunderbolt-dedicated PCIe lanes vary by ThinkPad model and I believe the t480 may only have 2, where some others like the t480s and X1C models from the same vintage feature 4 lanes on their Thunderbolt port.
I wish you luck in figuring it out! Those display issues aside, I have nothing but good things to say about the TS3 hub - it allows this t480 to function as a seriously connected desktop with a single cable most of the time, and I really love it for that.
Cheers,
~M
I haven’t had any issues with an external display. Although I am using CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock - 87W Charging, 7X USB 3.1 Ports, USB-C Gen 2, DisplayPort, UHS-II SD Card Slot, Gigabit Ethernet for Mac & PC
I hear that the M1 has trouble with some cheap-o USB-C docks.

Hi, I know it has been a few months since this post was updated, but I am wondering if anyone has a solution...
I have the LG 38GL950G-B monitor and a 15" MBP late 2018 model. Now my display port cable goes directly from my monitor to my gaming PC for ... well ... gaming at 3840x1600 @ 160Hz.
But when I hook up my mac via the CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock, and then use a DisplayPort to HDMI converter to use an HDMI cable to my monitor's open HDMI port, I get a scaled down view of my Mac's display. And my Mac's own display gets squished so there are large black bars at the top and bottom.
I suspect that HDMI cannot handle this resolution via the CalDigit Dock? Is that the problem?
This is the one I have read up on. CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock - 87W Charging, 7X USB 3.1 Ports, USB-C Gen 2, DisplayPort, UHS-II SD Card Slot, LAN, Optical Out, for 2016+ MacBook Pro & PC (Space Gray - 0.7m/2.3ft Cable) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_T7rtFb55BGN5A
The TB3 docking station is what you want; they reason they are expensive is that they are basically mini-computers themselves. They contain a cpu, and gpu that helps to process the signals that are forwarded to the monitors.
I think this is basically the most reasonably priced one: https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF
What's the dock you're using? Make sure you're using the right usb-c port on your dock and connect it into the thunderbolt 3 port on your razer blade stealth (not all usb-c ports support thunderbolt 3).
For e.g. this caldigit dock has multiple usb-c ports, but the one labeled "computer" is what should be connected to your laptop's thunderbolt 3 port with the cable.
The best one works great !
CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock - 87W Charging, 7X USB 3.1 Ports, USB-C Gen 2, DisplayPort, UHS-II SD Card Slot, LAN, Optical Out, for 2016+ MacBook Pro & PC (Space Gray - 0.7m/2.3ft Cable) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_1RRhFbQH5KYYX
Is this the one you have? I'll do it if nothing else works, but that was more than I thought I'd have to spend!
If anyone has something simpler/ cheaper that works, I'd love to know about it.
Running one of these: CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock
It's pretty legit and works very well with Arch. A couple times where when I sleep my machine and unplug while it's slept, it will be upset on waking up, but otherwise it works 100% every time.
Why can't you just plug the USB-C to USB-A dock into one of the monitors ? (do the Monitors only have 1 USB-C port ?)
What you're asking for really isn't a "thing". (there's no such thing as a "USB-C splitter". USB-C doesn't really work that way.
I mean.. that type of thing DOES exist. It''s called a USB-C Docking Station. But they're pretty pricy. (like this CalDigit one for $300: https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF/ref=asc_df_B07CZPV8DF/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309777534894&hvpos=1o12&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9003396814657743267&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&... )
I believe I was able to get Freesync working. From the MacBook, a thunderbolt 3 cable plugs into the CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 dock (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_fbMmCbA9WGZXT). From the dock, there's a DisplayPort cable that attaches to the monitor. I ended up buying the monitor listed in my post. I enabled Freesync in the monitor settings and was successful, but I have not tried playing a game.
Getting it enabled was independent of the OS, so I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work through Bootcamp.
Hope this helps!
The CalDigit TS3+ is an amazing dock. Gives you a ton of ports, and you only attach one cable because it acts as an 85W power supply too. Link to it on Amazon $300
As far as thunderbolt hubs go, this is a very good one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF/
While it still has an AV port, you can just... not use it.
For a TB3 dock, I’d recommend the Caldigit TS3. It was my favorite dock for desktop use with a MBP and I still continue to use it with my iMac. It might be tough to justify $250 for this dock but it’s honestly worth every penny.
For a cheap portable hub, the VAVA 8-in-1 USB-C Hub is a great choice. Tried out multiple hubs before this one and it was the winner in my book.
I use the CalDigit TS3+
https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF
100% agree with the conclusion a dedicated dock and 2tb enclosure a much better deal. Especially for the price.
TS3+ is a great comparison for someone in the market:
https://smile.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF
I think the CalDigit TS3 Plus is the best Docking Device overall right now...
Get a USB C hub or a thunderbolt dock if this is an issue for you. I just got this and it works great for me:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CZPV8DF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I haven’t had any issues with it over heating at all. I’m using a 16 inch base model MacBook Pro and it’s connected to the CalDigit TS3+ hub (which is supposed to be pretty fast, Apple sells it), it dishes out 87W charging and has 15 ports. Its expensive, but I would recommend it.
It's a bit spendy but I got this dock from caldigit: CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF
It works perfectly with my Framework (running Ubuntu) as well as my Lenovo work laptop (running Windows).
The older TS3 CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Use a DAC or USB to 3.5mm AUX adapter. I have a Caldigit TS3+ with a FiiO K3 DAC that gets audio feed from a USB-C port on the back of my dock.
There's a lot cheaper ways to do it, like this adapter.
I use this as a hub that provides power and hookups for usb devices:
CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock - 87W Charging, 7X USB 3.1 Ports, USB-C Gen 2, DisplayPort, UHS-II SD Card Slot, Gigabit Ethernet for Mac & PC, Thunderbolt 4 Compatible (0.7m/2.3ft Cable) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_KVGP2PB2AHWV0STY5WZC?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
And this switch is in foot range for me to switch from my PC to my laptop:

I was going to buy the OWC one, but it wasn't available at the time so went with Anker and it has been working flawlessly.
Amazing solutions.
I think I like the first one better due to less wiring and costing stuff. I looked into it and found "CalDigit TS3 Plus".

Do you know whether this one is good?
Which port I should use for gaming monitor that will give me more bandwidth? Thunderbolt 3 or DP 1.2?
Also I was wondering. My second display is 1080p 60Hz. So will these docks be able to give more bandwidth for my main monitor?
Been eyeing on this for the same purpose: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF
Yes, you can use this one: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07CZPV8DF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_NZHCRB79TQGPPD3HNB6B
i just ordered this one CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock
The MacBook air’s ports are thunderbolt, so you can use a thunderbolt dock. They’re all going to be around $250 (yikes) and require external power (shouldn’t be a problem with a stationary monitor/desk setup). Caldigit and Anker make them, and they both have two Thunderbolt 3 ports (plug one of these into your laptop using a 0.5m thunderbolt 3 cable) and two USB-C ports. Keep in mind that you have to be super vigilant with the cables, as anything going through Thunderbolt needs to have a Thunderbolt compatible cable, and you only get the 40Gbps Thunderbolt speeds if your cable is under half a metre. You can still get up to 20Gbps under 2m through the Thunderbolt ports, and the rest of your non-Thunderbolt USB-C peripherals will likely be fine using whatever cables you’re currently using.
(I hope that helps and isn’t too confusing ._.)
I bought an external kvm switch a while back, it's not too bad it has four usb-a ports for peripherals and 2 usb-a ports that go to the two computers. I think you still might need a little dock of some sort for the mac. The wiring is a little messy though with the one that I bought and I ultimately just switch out computers on my caldigit ts3 plus dock. Now that can get pretty expensive...
There's also the option of getting a keyboard and mouse with multiple bluetooth connections and just using that to switch imputs. Logitech's MX Master stuff is pretty common if you are into that. There's also a lot of mechanical keyboard options that are going this way, keychron probably being the one I notice most and that leaves you trying to find a multi device mouse.
I fight with my set up almost daily, I am just too messy probably and can't decide what I really want to do so hopefully this just gives you a few ideas. I don't think there's any correct answer just whatever works for you!
Dock: Caldigit ts3+ dock - There are a ton of options so you don't have to go with this one
(One thing I have noticed is that my windows computer's fan runs as soon as I plug this into it and is typically quieter with just a display port or hdmi connection.)
KVM switch: It's pretty much this one
Keyboards: https://www.keychron.com - Also on amazon
https://www.logitech.com/en-us/mx/master-series.html - Pretty much the go to as far as a multi device mouse goes, I can't think of many but they are probably out there.
You definitely need a dock with an external power brick. They are usually pretty big as they put out 180w (20v at 9A). Both the Caldigit TB3, Anker TB3 docks have 180w power supplies and support 87-90w over the TB3 cable. The new OWC 4port TB4 hub only puts out 65w over the thunderbolt 3/4 cable and the OWC 11 port dock supports 90w.
As for the passthrough YMMV but I personally have had limited success with passthrough docks as it isn't clear how much power is diverted to the dock vs. out the passthrough interface. I think you might be ok if you have a laptop that only needs <65w and a 90-100w USB-C power adapter.
CalDigit's products or bust, don't waste your time with anything else. Go for the TB3 dock (https://www.amazon.com/CalDigit-TS3-Plus-Thunderbolt-Dock/dp/B07CZPV8DF) or Soho dock if you are trying to save some coin.
This one is on sale in the US.
Can't find it on the UK site.
One way is to use a Thunderbolt Dock. I used a Caldigit TS3+ before I bought a Mac mini and can highly recommend it - and is on sale for Cyber Monday. There are los of other Thunderbolt docks though, and I think this Wirecutter article does a good job of reviewing them.
You might also be able to connect both displays through some combinations of adapters and daisy chaining. The challenge will be charging your laptop, since both thunderbolt displays will be in use. I think the Rolls Royce of TB3 docks would be the CalDigit TS3 Plus (Amazon). It has high reviews and a bunch of ports. One 4K monitor would be connected through DisplayPort and you can connect the second one through USB-C (4K30) or through the other TB3 port (4K60).
This is 250$, but is a Thunderbolt 3 dock that can also charge up to 87 W, so it could also potentially replace your charger as well. It has 5 USB 3.0 Type A ports, ethernet, and a thunderbolt downstream port. It also has a DisplayPort, optical audio jack, 2x 3.5mm, 2x USB Type C (1 is 5 Gbps, 1 is 10Gbps), and an SD card reader. Since the power plug is 20V 9A, you have up to 180W for total power.
If you are really worried about it and willing to spend the extra money get a usb 3.1 Gen2 or even a TB3 hub to connect both capture cards to.
You'll likely be fine on just USB3 and save a ton of money that way but if you wanted to spend the extra money anything above USB3 will be beyond plenty of bandwidth and you can support up to thunderbolt 3 so you have plenty of options.
Something like this is way overkill for your needs but would certainly solve any bandwidth problem at 40gbps
This is slightly more reasonable at 10gbps but will kind of pricey
This is much more reasonably priced but would still give you plenty of bandwidth at 5gbps.
As an added bonus the first two would also be capable of driving your display from the same cable
I was assigning Lenovo TB3 gen 2 docks, but they've all started crapping out lately. Have moved on to Caldigit TS3 plus, which have been solid so far. For bag docks I like this Cablematters, but they have lots of options depending on your needs (4k, dp, gige, etc)

It's probably cheaper to get a USB 3 interface. Try a gen 3 Scarlett 2i2.
if you're gaming on a pc, wouldn't you be using the gpu to drive your monitors? Unless you're using an egpu, which would mean you just want a thunderbolt 3 kvm dock. Level1techs has some pretty cool kvm options. ebay also has retiring enterprise grade stuff.
not sure if this would be helpful, but this is my setup. I have 2 1440p monitors hooked up to my gpu via displayport, then when I need to use my mac with the monitors I change monitor inputs to hdmi, and plug my macbook into my caldigit ts3. monitor 1 has active displayp port to hdmi + hdmi cable. monitor 2 has usb c to hdmi (QGeeM off amazon) + hdmi.
all my input devices are connected to a 4 port usb hub which is connected to a usb input kvm switch.
I'm driving a 34" ultrawide and a regular 27" just fine with my 2018 Macbook Pro 15". I haven't tried clamshell mode since I prefer having it available as another screen for me.

Network card. It's known that the Killer NIC doesn't work well in linux. I bought an intel wifi card for like $25 on amazon and installed that before I even booted the XPS 13 for the first time. Zero wifi issues.
Docks, it is known that the Dell docks don't work well, and the 3rd party "dock" he tried isn't even a dock. If you do research you can find ones that actually work with Dell XPS and linux. I'm using this CalDigit TS3 Thunderbolt Dock with zero issues in Ubuntu.
I haven't had any issues with sleep or hibernate or suspend. This guy may be doing something wrong. I've run Ubuntu 16.xx, 18.xx, and 19.xx on this laptop.
I rarely use bluetooth with this laptop. I have never been able to get bluetooth to work reliably on desktops/laptops, regardless of OS. I've tried on windows and ubuntu. It always ends up being a PITA to pair something and by the time i get it working my desire to listen to music or do a google hangouts or whatever is long gone. SO this one may be an issue but it seems to span every laptop/desktop/linux/windows that I've tried.
