I figured it out - The Book is "Can't Stop, Won't Stop:A History of the Hip-Hop Generation" by Jeff Chang. Compare the shots at the start of Episode 5 with the Amazon pic of the back of the book under the cover photo - same red and black split in the writing with a pic in the bottom right quadrant. https://www.amazon.com/Cant-Stop-Wont-History-Generation/dp/0312425791/ref=pd_sim_14_5?ie=UTF8&pd_rd_i=0312425791&pd_rd_r=RZ874D15NRRTT9QFYS8E&pd_rd_w=l1xFb&pd_rd_wg=i3BOb&psc=1&refRID=RZ874D15NRRTT9QFYS8E
A few years ago, one of the required readings in a history course I took was Jeff Chang's "Can't Stop, Won't Stop." I don't remember anything about it, besides it having to do with the cultural significance of the development of hip hop.
For somebody from a different generation, it might be important to understand the historical context of the genre. What were the conditions that hip-hop grew out of? How has it grown to the global art form that it is now?
A good start might be reading Jeff Chang's book Can't Stop Won't Stop, and then expand from there.
If you really want to dive deep then read this: https://www.amazon.com/Cant-Stop-Wont-History-Generation/dp/0312425791
It'll take you from Jamaica to the Bronx to DJ Kool Herc. You can get a lot of artists from the text and start filling in blanks between the 1970's to now.
Yeah I want to recommend Jeff Chang's "Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation". It's about the origin of hip hop https://www.amazon.com/Cant-Stop-Wont-History-Generation/dp/0312425791
I'll check it out, thanks. I'm reading this right now and really enjoying it.
If anyone wants to learn more about hip hop being created in the South Bronx in the 70s and 80s, check out this fantastic book-
