I would recommend the cap OB-86
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_wxinAb8DEYXR6
It’s 120$ right now on amazon. In a year or whatever you can upgrade to a Ohio power bar abd use this as a guest/landline bar. I don’t live in a corrosive environment but it has been a great bar. For the price it’s excellent. IMHO the rouge Ohio is a better bar. But it is quite a bit more $$. When I have acquired all the other equipment I want I upgrade the bar.
The knurling isn’t cheese grader but I’m happy with it.
It's silly to spend extra for a beater bar with the Rogue name. Just get a regular beater bar.
The Cap OB-86B on Amazon is pretty reputable at $140.
You see that green sticker at the end of this bar
It actually includes the weight.
The cheap Cap Barbell would be fine.
Do you have preference on shaft diameter? Assuming you're looking at 28.5mm I would go with a Rogue Boneyard Ohio bar or Chan bar if it pops up.
If you're cool with 28mm there are a lot more options in that price range - Synergee, ISF, Hero Barbell Legend bar, Wright next gen bar, Nordic lifting bar, etc.
I don't have firsthand experience with the CAP beast bar, but it's a decent low budget option from what I've read: https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Beast-7-Foot-Olympic/dp/B001K4OPY2/
Your question would be better asked on a metal working or DIY sub.
No reason to think that people on /r/homegym have knowledge on what you're asking.
I have done a bit of metal working... my alternative would be go buy a tap and construct it the same way. I think he says in the video the tap is like $10.
Although, my real suggestion would be... buy a barbell.
I've done a lot of DIY stuff in my life, but I wouldn't trust this thing anymore than I would a cheap barbell from Dick's, Walmart, etc. So it just doesn't make sense to me. And it looks like there's no way for the sleeves to spin at all. There's no knurling at all. It's a shit barbell and what can you really expect from it limitations wise? Kind of unknown, right? How quickly will you outgrow its use and need something else anyhow? And is this like $90 materials (assuming you own all of the necessary tools aside from the tap) plus your time to do it. You can get a notably better barbell for like $160 (https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Beast-7-Foot-Olympic/dp/B001K4OPY2/). In the grand scheme of things, unless you want to do it as fun project or something, just spend the extra money and get something that will be better long-term.
Is it not possible for you to get a decent barbell where you are? Or is it just something you want to do for fun?
Apologies if I’m mistaken. I was going off the chart in the Amazon listing of all the CAP bars
CAP 7-Foot Olympic Bar for Weightlifting and Power Lifting | Various Specialty Bars https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_kYN5FbF1JE9KA
If I was hard up for a bar I would grab a cheapo titan or the cap beast bar https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Beast-7-Foot-Olympic/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=cap+beast+barbell&qid=1608691226&sprefix=cap+beas&sr=8-3
Looking for my first bar and I'm cheap as hell. Not doing olympics or crazy heavy deads or whatever, but I lift a lot and just want something to last.
With the amazon sale Cap beast is $97. Cap Boss is $108. Is this a reasonable option? Which one?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001K4OPY2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A2L77EE7U53NWQ&psc=1
Not OP, but it looks like this one.
I know because the rack looks like a CAP rack also and I have both of those things. :) If it is that bar it's a solid bar and I'm pleased with it. Although I haven't put more than 300lbs on it yet.
The standard recommendation here is usually this bar its the best bang for your buck bar. A lot of people start out with it and if you outgrow it it makes a great beater bar.
You can wait for the CAP barbell to go on sale for <$130. It's one of, if not the best budget bar around. Buy something else if you need it ASAP. But, if you can wait, I would personally setup a deal alert and buy when it goes on sale.
The CAP bar is $166 with free shipping on amazon. As far as I could tell from many other threads, this was the best affordable bar to get. I got this as a second bar to do cleans, dead lifts, etc. Though I am reading the replies here and seeing a different CAP bar (which costs more, but doesnt hold as much weight.. and doesnt show on sale..so not sure it is a better bar).
I dont quite know why center knurling is needed.. and let it be known that I am just getting back in to weights, so if I can clean the bar alone I would be happy at this point!
The CAP O-86B retailing at $110 is a very well respected general purpose bar. It will last you a healthy amount of time until you decide to spring for a more expensive Oly or Powerlifting focused bar.
FringeSport for bumpers and barbells.
CAP's OB-86B, OB-86PB, or OB-86PBCK are supposedly very good for the price.
I'd get 2 pairs of 5s and one pair of 2.5s.
Save your money and get this: CAP Barbell Olympic Bar, 2-Inch, 1000-Pound Capacity, 7-Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4-AExb35MGHCJ. Read the reviews. People like it better than the rogue, which you should know are inherently overpriced due to their partnership with crossfit
This one?
its 1000 pound limit and I doubt id ever exceed that. But the barbell is 7 feet. I am only 5'5.
For plates, I would recommend how many ever 45s that you need (depends on strength) plus: 2x25, 4x10, 2x5, and 2x2.5. Of course,t his assumes you're talking lbs. If kg, then figure the equivalent.
Honestly, that barbell kinda sucks. A 500 lb weight limit is very low (keep in mind that static loads are very different from dynamic [moving] loads) and you'll probably need to replace it before too long. But it could be okay for getting started. CAP does make a better (albeit not great) bar for a bit more:
http://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2
Also consider a starter package from Academy or Dick's, which will total around 300 lbs (barbell + plates) for $220-$220.
Never ever purchase a squat rack with a lat pulldown attachment.
I would invest more elsewhere and less into the barbell. The best budget barbell is definitely the cap-ob-86b. Nothing comes even close to it and it is comparable to $200+ barbells.
If you are looking for a bar around $100, then I would highly recommend this one from amazon
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001K4OPY2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I bought it a few months ago its fantastic, I would compare it to some of the $300 bars in terms of quality. Plus free shipping if you have prime!
If you really want bang for your buck, I'd probably go with this York barbell:
Otherwise, xtcfitness.ca sells a 300lb York set (normal, deep dish or rubber) for $250. All my equipment was purchased from kijiji (other than my flat bench, $75).
Cap barbell <strong>OB-86B</strong> $140 on amazon. I think you can get it slighter cheaper on ebay with the 15% off coupon they're running today PERFECTDAY.
If anyone is looking for the CAP Beat bar, this is the cheapest price I can recall in 18 months
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001K4OPY2/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_7?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1
Titan bumped up the price of its entry bar by $10
https://www.titan.fitness/strength/barbells/olympic/economy-olympic-barbell/430085.html
Looking at $1000 to start and add later. Right now looking at getting - Rack, Barbell, weights, adjustable bench. I don't need top of the line, but would like something that I can kind of grow into.
Here's what I'm considering at the moment. Would definitely appreciate input on preferences or things to avoid.
Rack
Titan T2 ($399) - https://www.titan.fitness/racks/power-racks/t-2-series/t-2-series-power-rack/T2-SERIES-RACK.html
Titan X2 (hesitant for this as I would probably want to bolt it down, but would prefer not to drill into my garage floor. Building a plywood platform may be prohibitively expensive due to lumber prices atm).
PR-1100 ($269) - https://www.repfitness.com/rep-pr-1100
Weights
Fitness Gear 300lbs Oly from Dicks ($300) and comes with bar
Inspire Fitness Rubber 300lbs with bar ($500) probably more than I want to spend atm
Not sure what else
Barbell
Possibly use the barbell that comes with the weight set for now to save money
Cap 7ft ($180) - https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Olympic-Weightlifting-Lifting-Specialty/dp/B001K4OPY2?th=1
Bench
Rep AB-3100 Adjustable ($209) - https://www.repfitness.com/benches/adjustable-benches/rep-ab-3100-fi-bench
Titan Incline Bench V2 ($139.99) - https://www.titan.fitness/strength/benches/adjustable/incline-bench-v2/400894.html
Open to suggestions

I should be able to come in around $1,000 with this set up, maybe a little more or little less depending on combination of stuff. I anticipate being able to aggressively upgrade/add throughout the remainder of the year.
If you're in the US you can get a decent beginner squat rack from Amazon or Walmart for $250-350. Building your own only to replace it will cost a lot more in the end and take an awful lot of time.
As for the bar, if you buy a decent one now you can keep it forever, or until you become a hulk. From what I can tell, the CAP OB-86B seems to generally be considered the best bang for your buck. It's currently available for $138 shipped at Amazon.
A great beginner bar for $200 or less is the CAP OB-86B. It's actually on sale right now on amazon for $109.
On the cheap end you could get a CAP OB-86B for $139 which is a good quality bar that should last you forever (I had one of these for some time). The knurl however is rather mild:
https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1200-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2/
For a nice budget stainless bar that will have more or less no maintenance to worry about you can get the Rep Power Bar V2 for $269 (I have the V1):
https://www.repfitness.com/rep-stainless-steel-power-bar
You also cannot go wrong with a Rogue Ohio Power Bar which is is going to be a bit more aggressive on the knurl than the others. You can save a bit via Boneyard (under 29mm) but sometimes the discount is minimal so keep an eye out for one you like:
https://www.roguefitness.com/rogue-ohio-power-bar
Any of these bars and likely countless others will outlive you and do what you need them to. Hope this helps.

I would do something like this.
Month 1: Barbell ($180) and some plates ($310)
Month 2: Squat stand ($420)
Month 3: Half Rack Conversion with plate storage ($285) and flat bench ($100)
Month 4: Extra plates or bumper plates
If you plan to build year after year, I would do something like this:
Year 1: Barbell ($180) and some plates ($310)
Year 2: Squat stand ($420)
Year 3: Half Rack Conversion with plate storage ($285) and flat bench ($240)
Year 4: Extra plates or bumper plates
If you're just going to do one year and stop, then adjustable DBs would be good. But if you actually plan to build a gym, DBs don't offer much to expand off of.
If you could save just $100 a paycheck, you could get all of this in ~4.5 months with $0 from your employer. Or 3.5 months with the first $500 from your employer. You'd have a pretty solid gym in 4 months.
Is the CAP OB-86B still recommended as a starter bar? Most my search results from here were from 4-5 years ago. This new version seems to have lower PSI and is more expensive.
https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Beast-7-Foot-Olympic/dp/B001K4OPY2?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1
Was gonna go with the Rep Sabre but not available right now. Open to other suggestions as well.
Amazon offers an Olympic bar(standard)
https://www.amazon.ca/Barbell-Olympic-2-Inch-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2
Standard weight is 45 lbs
I am an out of shape 34 year old dad who's trying get back into shape. I am currently 6 foot tall and 265 pounds but I am pretty wide framed. I just bought the fitness reality squat rack so I need a good quality bench.
I am currently looking at this one. https://repfitness.com/collections/benches/products/ab-3100-adjustable-weight-bench-v3
My questions is this seems more than strong enough but the pad tappers up top. I mainly will use this bench for flat bench press. Will this taper effect me or is this bench more than sufficient. I am on a budget but not trying to sacrifice stability or safety. Rep seems from what I read to be the best bang for your buck.
Thanks in advance.
Also I am going to buy the dsports 300 lbweight set for $400. From what I read the bar is pretty bad. Would this bar be a decent upgrade? I rather get something that won't rust in my unheated garage.
CAP Barbell THE BEAST Olympic Bar | For Weightlifting and Power Lifting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_0FAF1RB4KW5CNK7632Y0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Hi, looking for advice on buying a barbell. Thanks jn advance.
I’m not like super into bodybuilding. Just do it a few times a week to stay relatively fit. Absolute max I’ll probably ever put on is like ~225 squat and bench, ~315 deadlift. I want something decent. I don’t want it to fall apart after a year. But I’d like to avoid spending $500 if I can…
Here are some options:
Cheap one I can buy at Canadian Tire https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/cap-barbell-olympic-bar-7-ft-1840718p.html#plp
A set I can buy from a local store: https://finerfitness.ca/products/york-2-cast-iron-olympic-300lb-weight-plate-set?_pos=22&_sid=4367f4d8e&_ss=r
Two that are pretty affordable that I’ve heard are decent..?
https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1200-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2?th=1
Home gym owner here. I was within your budget, granted at pre-COVID pricing. I’m very much in the camp of buy once cry once, and while your list is workable, you’re probably going to see some buyer’s remorse on the back end with your initial choices. I’ll go through the list:
As for the rest plus some other nice-to-haves:
Good luck!
Probably something like this: https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Beast-7-Foot-Olympic/dp/B001K4OPY2/
Those are ok general bars.
Hi everyone,
inspired by this sub (and others) we are building our home gym. I have an eye on Black Friday sales, but want to decide on the "components" before that. Biggest ? is the rack. It will be a gym for my wife and I and we are not lifting very heavy. Everything is below 350 lb at this point and our gym will be on the 2nd floor of our newly built house. Biggest drops (if done it will be by accident) will be deadlifts, not snatches etc. What we have in mind, in addition to the rogue platform we bought from a local crossfit gym.
Bench: REP Fitness AB-3000 FID Adjustable Bench
Barbell: Here I am very open to suggestions. I was thinking about the CAP bar from Amazon or go with the "buy once, cry once" approach:
Plates: We will buy the cheapest bumper plates from Fringe, REP, Titan etc that are available on Black Friday
Rack: Initially, I wanted to go with the REP 1100, but I am questioning the decision for two reasons:
My current choice would be the REP 4000 (although I do not know the price) or theTitan X3 series. Both with the lat/row extension for now.
Do you think those are worth the extra 200-300 USD (in addition to more expensive attachments of course?
Dumbbells: Here I am also in between chairs, as I do not want to buy a whole rack full of dumbbells (mainly for the reason being on the second floor). Would you buy something like the Powerblocks or rather loadable dumbbells?

Thanks in advance for some advise
Cap Beast bar is generally considered to be the absolute lowest priced bar you can get away with.

I would personally spend an extra like 20 bucks for this over the beast bar though.
https://www.bellsofsteel.us/all-products/barbells/bars/powerlifting-bar/
I was about to buy the Utility bar from Bells of Steel ( https://www.bellsofsteel.us/product/basic-barbell/ ) but then I popped over to Amazon and saw that the CAP Beast bar was down to $160. It got lost in the mail and by the time that Amazon was able to take care of it, the price had fallen further to $150, so they also gave me a credit to make up for the difference ( CAP 7-Foot Olympic Bar for Weightlifting and Power Lifting | Various Specialty Bars https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JHMSWJ4Z7SZWFSCDWKRN ).
So even though it doesn’t meet the specs above (its 28.5 diameter without center knurling), it’s cheap enough that I can save and get a nicer second bar in the future. And it generally gets pretty good reviews, so I think it will be enough for the time being.
Progear rack at walmart for $265: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Progear-1600-Ultra-Strength-800lb-Weight-Capacity-Power-Rack-Cage-with-Lock-in-J-Hooks/429573691
Same, but at Macy's for $285 with SUMMER coupon: https://www.macys.com/shop/product/progear-1600-ultra-strength-800lb-weight-capacity-power-cage?ID=10343140
Barbell: If you can't find a used Rogue or whatever, I'd go Fringe Wonderbar ($265ish free ship) or a boneyard Rogue 28.5mm for $270ish shipped). Could also just fork out the dough for the Rogue 2.0 which I believe is $315ish shipped (so not a crazy amount more. On the ultra budget side, the CAP Beast or Boss seem to be a common recommendation around $180: https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Beast-7-Foot-Olympic/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=cap%2Bthe%2Bbeast&qid=1620762694&sr=8-2&th=1

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_5FJWDBFCF83HTJP07GE2
I can't say if it's the best or not, but I picked up strengthshop bastard power bar for $202 shipped from their black friday deal + 10% off coupon last night. I just looked and I guess it's out of stock now. They have the regular bastard bars for even cheaper if that works for you. https://www.strengthshopusa.com/black-friday-sale.html
I know some recommend the CAP barbell that's rated 1000 lbs from amazon for a decent budget bar. https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=sr_1_7?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1542138550&sr=1-7&keywords=cap+barbell+45+pound
It really depends on your needs and what you plan to do with it. I personally prefer a power bar since I want the center knurling and I primarily train for powerlifting.

Hey you actually can get lots of things shipped from Amazon, nothing crazy high quality but good enough for a start.
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B001K4OPY2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_detailpage_o00_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
That's a good bar from CAP.
Also Canadian Tire does sell a 2 inch 7 foot bar. Sometimes a little hard to find but it usually comes with 100 pounds of weight plus the bar for a decent price.
The dumb bells there are alright quality as well, the benches are pretty meh though. But they have a pretty good squat rack combo deal that comes with an adjustable bench.
Craigslist, LetGo, Facebook Marketplace, and OfferUp are the best places to look.
At a bare minimum you want a barbell, bench, and a rack/cage that you can bench, squat, and do pullups in.
As far as barbells go, buy new unless you know what you're looking for. You don't have to pay rogue money, but you can do ok with one of the following:
Beyond that, I really recommend a cage just because there is more you can do with it, but something like the Titan T-2, Fitness Reality, or TDS that can be had around $300 new on amazon are good enough for all but the strongest people.
Get this one. Those have iffy reviews. This bar is universally well liked. And in expensive
If you're looking for a budget bar set a notifcation on camelcamelcamel for the Cap OB-86B https://www.amazon.ca/Barbell-Olympic-2-Inch-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2
Well regarded as the best budget bar, routinely goes on sale for $100.
This one here? That seems like a good price.
You're only getting 265lb + the bar (45lb) which makes the total of 310lb
You could get a York 260Lb Bumper Plate Set $286.00 + Cap barbell for little more. Not that their barbell won't work for you but a lot of people including myself buy a cheap bar then end up wasting more money upgrading shortly down the line.
350Lbs for $385 as opposed to your $418 but it does show as $326 for me too.
CAP OB-86B for $188 is what most people get as their first barbell. Unfortunately it's normal price right now
Also Fitness Depot can usually give a discount if you try to talk them down.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2
This is what I have at home. Works fine.
I recently got the fit505 power rack for $230: http://www.treadmillfactory.ca/fit505-power-rack
Might be sold out now. It looks identical to the AmStaff one, but I read a review saying that the Fit505 one was much better. Though they could in fact be identical, not sure. Anyways, I'm very happy with my fit505 power rack... but I've heard some bad things about AmStaff in general.
In terms of weights, you might be better off on Kijiji if you're near a big city. You can find used weights for 50 cents a pound (no tax).
Then maybe pick up one of these bars:
You'll also need a bench. Again, I would look on Kijiji and find a used bench. You can get an alright one for around $100 or a good one for around $200.
Your best deal is to buy a full used set from someone on Kijiji if you want the best value. I live near Toronto, and I've seen people selling a rack, bench, bar, weights, lat pulldown, few extras, etc. for around $700. Generally you can get things for about 1/3 of the retail price... so that's by far the best way to go if you're looking to get the best bang for your buck. But it takes patience, and you need a vehicle for transport.
This one is pretty decent. Sometimes it goes on sale for around $100 bucks
The reason most people don't like squat stands is that they take up the same space as a cage while not being as versitale, and for not much less money. That said if height is a problem you can find shorter cages, such as http://www.titan.fitness/cages-and-racks/short-power-rack.html
Also, why the C-70 bar? It won't rack properly on any full size stand/rack. If price is a concern this bar is full size for quite a bit less https://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2
As far as space for everything, if you don't mind deadlifting in your power rack you will have plenty of space
I'm still just starting up with the home gym. So I don't yet have much. But here is what I have: Power Rack: http://www.treadmillfactory.ca/fit505-power-rack -- got this for $229 though it is backordered at the moment.
Bar: https://www.amazon.ca/Barbell-1000-Pound-Solid-7-Feet/dp/B001K4OPY2 -- got for $165
3/4 inch Rubber mat from fitnessdepot for $50
I'm currently looking out for plates from kijiji and the likes. Hope this helps.
Edit: I also bought a 4' x 8' piece of plywood from home depot which I'll cut to size as the rubber mat and just lay it underneath the mat for additional cushioning
Where did you see it for 100$? Best I can find is amazon for 130:
http://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2
Rack
Power Rack (Cage) vs Squat Stand
The S-1(2) will require spotter arms. It also will not need to be bolted down so you won't need a platform for it. But I'd suggest buying stall mats for a separate deadlifting area. Your choice will just boil down to ceiling height and wanting to be able to do pull ups. Because both will serve the purpose of providing a safe way to work out (provided you do get the spotter arms)
Olympic Bar
The one most people rave about is the Rogue Ohio <strong>Power</strong> Bar. It's a stiff 29mm bar with sharp aggressive knurling and a center knurl designed for the "big 3" power movements.
The Ohio Bar is their flagship "multi-purpose" bar that's capable of handling the big 3 and also snatching and clean and jerking.
Is it worth the money? Yes, in my opinion it is, but if you can't justify budgeting for it. A very well regarded budget bar is the CAP OB-86B Knurling isn't as aggressive and has no center knurl. These are the ones i normally suggest because the Rogue Power bar is HQ and will last you a lifetime at what I honestly consider a mid range price. The CAP one is just a really nice bar for a low price.
Weight Plates
Craigslist hunt for plates that are 450mm or 17.72" diameter on the 45 lb plates You're going to be looking for something around the ballpark of about $0.50 per lb. You want those to all be the same size roughly. for impact absorption during a deadlift. Most people will suggest grabbing as many 45lbs as you can and forgoing any 35lb plates. But the most common sporting good store deals sell plates in sets of 2.5lb x 2 / 5lb x 4 / 10lb x 2 / 25lb x 2 / 35lb x 2/ and 45lb x 2. So if they get relisted on craigslist you will find them in that configuration. That set is made to go from 45lb to 300lb in 5 lb increments.
FID Benches
Flat Incline Decline Benches are going to be pretty pricey if you want a solid piece of equipment. The Rogue ones are really beefy but are insanely priced. Ones that will work completely adequately will be in the $200-$250 price range. Something like the Repfitness FID. I don't have a FID bench personally so I can't comment too much.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001K4OPY2/ref=s9_hps_bw_g200_i4 is the CAP bar that everyone recommends, I wouldn't get that $62 one
OP, this is a very very solid Olympic bar for the price:
I may be wrong but...
http://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2
I have a home gym; here's my equipment:
For lat work I bought some simple hardware from Home Depot, 2 rock climbing pulleys, 2 carabiners, 30' rock climbing rope, a loading pin, and a lat bar. I set this up in my squat cage for a simple pulley system with my 2" plates. This set me back about $100.
I bought some assistance bands for pull ups. This was about another $50.
My setup is in the garage and I don't use any mats although I might pick some up eventually.
I bought most of my dumbbells locally from sporting goods stores or wal-mart at $1 per pound, except now that I'm buying 40 lbs and up I'm buying slightly better quality dumbbells. My pair of 40s were $115 or so.
I bought the most basic of basic iron 2" plates from a local supplier at $1 per pound.
2 45s, 2 35s, 2 25s, 4 10s, 4 5s, and 2 2.5s -> ~$300. I'm adding more as I grow into them and may eventually add bumper plates. I also bought a really nice flat / incline / decline bench from the same guy for $300 to replace my el cheapo bench I had before (that wobbled and didn't feel stable).
TLDR: You're paying slightly too much for plates. I think you're spending double what you should on your bar. You might not need a mat at all so really consider if you do. And if you trim any money out of what you have now apply it to a better bench (at least make sure the one you're getting is really stable).
Or at least the $140 range.
Good deal even just for the plates, but order the CAP Olympic barbell on amazon, I think it's about $125ish. I have it and its great.
Here you go, price went up: http://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2
Sure, homegym is the best (check out /r/homegym as well), I'm actually just finishing up a workout. I'll try and list it out, never actually done it might be interesting:
2 Horse Stall mats 3/4" thick - $40 each at Tractor Supply (in Franklin) the smell terrible until you air them out
PowerTec cage and bench - Craigslist - $300, this thing is awesome, I'd recommend specifically searching powertec on CL, they're rare but solid and well priced
Powerblock 90s - $450ish - Bodybuilding.com on sale - I splurged, Play It Again called me 2 months later with a set and stand for $300 or $350. Meh, they were my extravagance and will probably outlive me.
Lat tower attachment for bench - $20 - Play It Again
Ez Curl Bar - $40 new at Play It Again (had to have it...)
Various tower attachments and handles -$6-10 each used at Play It Again
Tons of weights - Used at play it again or yard sales, it does sting paying $60 for 2 45s (including tax)
CAP Barbell - $108, I just got this one and wish I'd done it earlier, had a crappy one that came with a set (also CAP oddly enough), Amazon has warehouse ones pretty often, only slight dings, it's a barbell, it'll be fine
Treadmill - $25 - yard sale, people want to give these things away sometimes. I use it as a walking desk or while watching tv.
Pretty sure that's it and the Powerblocks are most of it (and weights) but they're slick, compact, and my wife and I can share the set. I've seen the 50s go for $1-200 on CL (got a set prior to the 90s for around $75 which got me hooked on using them). You could totally get 2 olympic dumbell handles and do the same thing for like $40.
Some advice, buy the nice stuff, you don't have to splurge but a shitty rack or bench will make you not want to go workout, hardly worth the $100 savings.
We cancelled our Y membership which was $100/month to try this out, so it paid for itself pretty quickly and it's so easy to "get to the gym".
Anyways, hope it helps have a good one!
FYI there's at least one on sale at Amazon Warehouse for ~$96. Used but might just be open box/minor scratches.
Not to hijack this thread, but similar situation, looking to build a sub-1K home gym, and this is what I've come up with:
This totals 726, which gives about 250 for used plates on craigslist somewhere. The Titan rack/Rogue S-2/3 are too tall for my basement (no standing OHP for me).
Any obvious substitution? I'm trying to go as reasonable affordable as possible without buying things that get terrible reviews. I have a door-mounted pull-up bar that works fine.
great deals.. well i was looking at this bar. http://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_i so far from what i have read it, its a great bar, but idk because it is my first bought bar lol
great this is what i am looking at right now..... http://www.amazon.com/CAP-Barbell-Olympic-1000-Pound-Capacity/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_cd_al_qh_dp_i and this bar is crome.
I do.
Have you got your bar yet? If not, the OB86B is a little nicer:

I plan on buying this barbell and don't know where to get plates. How much weight should I get and where should I get it. I want to ensure I have enough weight to be able to smoothly add more weight as I am a beginner that will follow a beginner program, it looks like most places sell 300 lb + bar so I assume I should get 300 lb total. Also most people recommend craigslist but I don't seem to find any deals there at the moment and I don't mind buying new at a reasonable price. I can't find any other places to get them. Any help would be nice.
I've purchased both of these ~ $90 that can take those numbers. I've caught them on sale at different times. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=emc_b_5_t
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B006R4EOXM/ref=emc_b_5_t This handles <500 on dead lifts & rack pulls & still going strong. I like cap barbells. They work for my needs. Rogue bars are nice but I can't afford them.
We've been very happy with this one from Amazon, but I haven't any idea of it's tensile strength.
I believe this is the gold standard for budget bars CAP Barbell OB-86B Olympic Bar (Original, 7 inches) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001K4OPY2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_m5kNzbXFBGP9E
