This dash mount is by far the most sturdiest, easy to use, and intuitive mount I've come across. I'm sure there are better ones out there but they're so cheap, I bought one for each of my family members.
Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I bought this mount a long time ago and it works great:

Only issue is if you want the volume buttons on the phone to be exposed you just have to make sure you don't mount it too low, but otherwise, it holds the phone great and has been reliable.
I've been using the smaller one of that model for a couple years and it's done the job. The smaller one actually kind of works (the clasps can't close and lock because the 6P is almost the same width when it's open but it keeps it secure)
I use this mount in my wifes truck. Works good. For my vehicle ended up using the cell phone holder that came with the Zerolemon and velcro'd that to the dash of my jeep.
I picked this car mount up when I still had an iphone5, unfortunately at the time I got a mount that was way too wide and needed to use some make-shift spacers (black electrical tape and a case) to keep the iphone5 in place. it fit my '14 motox really well, and should fit the XPE just fine as it is supposed to expand up to 3.3" wide.
I use an iOttie Easy One Touch XL. Very solid unit and hold the phone awesome, but with one draw back. The side grippers will squeeze the down volume so I had to cut a slit in the foam so it not apply pressure to the volume rocker. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007FH716W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have been using this one for almost a year now and no complaints
it has fallen off of my dash twice when it was really hot - fortunately i wasnt driving. when this happens you just rinse the suction cup with water and let it air dry.
iottie xl one touch suctinoed on the dash right befor the curve above the air vent. In my line of sight for torque, maps, music, etc but doesn't block any part of the road and no danger of it falling out the window if it falls off during a corner.
I love the iotttie one touch since it's so easy to put the phone in and out of, i find myself taking handing it passengers to change music or text for me instead of having them reach over. Also it's a very durable plastic and super sticky suction cup. No vibrations even on sucky RI roads.
I've heard good things about the cd mounts, but i still have to look down at it as if it were in the cupholder and i still use cd's every now and then.
iOttie mount from Amazon. It mounts from a suction cup on my dashboard.
I have used this one for a couple of years and have been happy with it.

This guy has actually been working surprisingly well for me https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007FH716W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use the iottie XL car mount with my Nexus 6p and it fits even with my Speck case on the phone. The suction cup sticks very well to my window. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007FH716W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_WtGzyb1V5JY4J
I use this one - http://www.amazon.com/iOttie-Windshield-Dashboard-Holder-Samsung/dp/B007FH716W/ref=zg_bs_7073961011_7
Make sure you get the model for larger phones if you have a big phone. Have had it for a year and it still works perfect.
The first mount I ever liked was the iOttie Easy One Touch XL: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007FH716W
When they came out with the iOttie HLCRIO132 Easy One Touch Wireless Qi Standard Car Mount Charger http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UXS7958 I jumped at it, and haven't looked back since! I love not having to fiddle around with the cable every time I want to charge the phone.
Here are a few pics since you requested: How it looks from where I sit, http://imgur.com/nKMUWDv still under the line of the dashboard and windshield, from where I sit, does not block any visibility through windshield.
This is what I mean about the top surface above the screen, the cups from the Iotties fit perfectly: http://imgur.com/vccg3du
Let me know if you need any more pics.
Proclip and Panavise make some good custom solutions. I don't have a flat surface in my car for my favorite mount, so I might get one of these.
I have the ottorbox commuter, it works great. Saved me a few times already I'm sure. You need a bigger car mount to hold it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007FH716W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
