Some cheapo temporary crossbars for the ski season. They do well with ski racks and smaller cargo but I'm planning on upgrading them soon. Amazon Link
I have these
Nice quality, good price, easy to install and use, etc. And they lock for what it's worth...not that someone with a drill couldn't take them but still a good deterrent.
Which rails are you talking about? The crossbars or the actual rails themself?
I got a decent set of cross bars off of Amazon and I so far they work great. I'll try to find the link and add it for you.

I got these. They are PERFECT. Great price AND extremely strong. Peep my pics for reference.
If you need something cheap to get by I have these and they work great for hauling my kayaks:
Betcha it’s the same 40$ Cargoloc brand crossbars I bought 4 years ago because I needed something fast for an upcoming trip. They held two kayaks on J hooks for a 4 hour highway trip, and have done well with bicycles since then. Only downside was that I had to put aluminum ducting tape along the channel in the bottom to cut down on wind noise. Recently I just drove four hours to buy a new kayak, and they’ve held up well for two hours at highway speeds since then, but the plastic housing is UV bleached and I would honestly probably feel better with Yakima or Thule in the long run, once I can find something in stock. Tl;Dr 4 years on the cargolock still has a solid hold on the car, so it’ll work. But if you’re carrying a thousand dollar kayak like I am right now, the higher end stuff is great for peace of mind
I have cross bars:
They are good cheap cross bars they do sing alittle when driving but not very noticeable. Also the kyacks holders are the malone 3 in one I believe I like it. And the single green is on the malone j kyacks holders we have drove about 250 miles no issues with them so far. I quite like the duel holder you have the option to hold 1, 2 kyacks, or surfboards, and more.
Maybe someone with more knowledge on them can give you a better answer. But I like the set up so far
This is what I got on Amazon a few weeks ago. I haven't used them with the "J" shaped racks yet, I only put one 15' canoe on top, face down, but I had no problems, and they are very affordable compared to alternatives. $50
My review hasn't showed up there yet, but I'm very pleased with them.
Thanks, just a simple set I got off Amazon. Works great
Bought them on amazon for 50$. Quality is really good
I got those ones off of Amazon for cheap. Not Thule quality but they get the job done.
These are the cross beams:

It’s an inexpensive set up, but I’m honestly very satisfied with the build quality. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive cross country with this set up.
I bought these bars for my 2018 based on feedback from the Crosstrek forums. Cheap and work great. There is a channel on the bottom that can be is noisy at high speeds but an easy fix, just put some aluminum tape over it. [link]
I bought these bars based on feedback from the Crosstrek forums. They are adjustable so they would fit both. Cheap and work great. Only complaint is there is a channel on the bottom that is noisy at high speeds but an easy fix, just put some aluminum tape over it. [link]

I don't recommend them though. They whistle like crazy. The culprit is the track along the bottom where the mounts slide back and forth to make them universal. I covered them with duct tape to fix it and now the noise is gone but it looks like crap
I just threw my 9 year old on a Kayak by herself (10 footer)
she is a petite little girl. (her parents are both under 5'8")
Never seen a Kayak.. she was right with me within 2 minutes. I was shocked.
you got a dicks sporting goods near you?
do you have rails on the top of your Subaru?
i just bought these
and some j hooks.. it was simple.
also.. ever thought about a small sailboat?

They are not Thule. They are these. Perfectly stable and excellently priced. Super easy to install as well.
The rails were pre-installed on our renegade, I've seen a few renegades without them.
These are the cross bars, $50:
These are the kayak racks, really only needed one set, $70:
If you're asking about Thule I assume you're looking for higher quality but I'll share what I use anyway. I got these and they work out great on my Sedona. Not sure if it's compatible with your rails, but they work great for me. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GA2HKAU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I bought these on Amazon.
Here is what they look like on the gt.

I was in your position with my 2019 Crosstrek and I chose not to buy any accessories. I can tell you that I have no regrets and that the time / difficulty to source and install my own roof rack, tow hitch, and bike rack has been worth it. Here's the cost / estimated difficulty with each one:
- Roof rack, $60, https://www.amazon.com/CargoLoc-2-Piece-Aluminum-Roof-Cross/dp/B00GA2HKAU, installed by self easily. Bars say they are only rated for 150 pounds though, so if you are getting a rooftop tent make sure your bars are rated for enough weight.
- Tow Hitch, $160, etrailer.com / CURT tow hitch, installed by self with moderate difficulty (U-HAUL also installs / sells their own tow hitches for ~ $400). Also I believe Subaru installs a smaller 1.5 tow hitch compared to the standard 2" hitch like CURT / U-HAUL.
- Bike rack, $40, Craigslist, easily installed by self.
- Rooftop cargo carrier, $200, Thule but got off Craigslist, had to fabricate custom bolts to my roof rack but no install problems after that.
You can see my 2019 Crosstrek with the bars and cargo carrier at https://www.reddit.com/r/Crosstrek/comments/hccyv1/crosstrek_in_the_catskills/ if that helps.
I've got budget crossbars and budget j-racks from amazon. The crossbars are CargoLoc, and they have a decent set of reviews on Amazon. They fit nicely. I'm not sure I 100% trust the locking mechanism that clamps the bars to the rails, so I tie them off to the roof rails to be sure. The bars themselves are extruded aluminum and are fine. If you tie a loop of good rope around the rails as a backup, well, that's not that different from the plastic strap that holds expensive Timberline towers onto the rails. The kayak racks are kayak racks. They're just metal bars and some bolts and plates that hold the racks to the crossbars. The ones I got are budget, but they also have very good reviews from users. They're functionally identical to more expensive racks.
I know some will disagree, and I probably would, too, if I used them more regularly. The CargoLocs certainly are not pretty.
Lots of Crosstreks in the crossbar reviews.
I bought these cheapo ones on Amazon and they're great so far!
If you plan on carrying stuff on the roof, buy some cross bars. Here are the ones that are mounted on my 2018 Forester: [link]
Random ones I got off Amazon. Didn’t expect much from them but they’re actually phenomenal.

I got these from Amazon and love them.
Here they are on my wagon.
I use the CargoLoc Bars from amazon.
This would solve but seeking alternate means prior to dropping +$50 USD. Thanks for the insight!
I picked up the following and so far they've been great.. a little noisier than I would've liked but for that price I can't complain:
here ya go
Whatever you do, don't cheap out and get these like I did unless you want to spend all your free time over the next week to try and get them to stop whistling. They whistle loud at anything over 45mph. Once I get that sorted out, I think I'll be happy with these, though. I (140lbs) climbed up and sat on my basket, and they didn't noticeably bend, or even creak/squeak.
I don't own them, but my neighbor does. He moves them between his outback and a his van as needed : [link]
