Get (or borrow from the Library) "Cartoon History of the Universe" - it covers the kind of basic info you want to know.
And do not interpret this as an insult, it is legitimately a very good introduction to world history.
Nothing is perfect or without issues, but Cartoon History of the Universe is as good a place to start as any.
If anything particularly piques your interest, then start going down that road to learn more.
Cartoon History of the Universe is actually a very intelligent portrayal of world history that goes down painlessly. I quibble with some elements of it (author assigns too much importance to the Jews IMO) but most books of this type have issues and I think this one has less than most.
Other than that, the only decent world history books I've seen have been college textbooks (for courses like "Introduction to World History). The problem there is that they are usually quite expensive and generally not available in libraries, but if there is a university in your area, check out their bookstore - often at least they'll sell used textbooks.
Surprised no one mentioned Cartoon History of the Universe It's really digestible, intelligent, deep and basically told in story form. Plus Gonick is really funny and frank about current debates about how things went down (unobtrusively discussed in footnote comics).
Nothing is better and or more enjoyable than Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe. Buy it for yourself and share it with family & friends.
