For a DIYer the safest approach is to use ramps, however I assume that won't work for a clutch replacement.
One tool I use at home is a crossbeam adapter. For example Nissans have no front floor jack point, however you can lift from the lower control arm attachment point. So with a crossbeam adapter you can safely lift the front end. I have a very strong floor jack (craftsman six ton SUV jack) and the beam adapter works well with this.
