Hero is a great system. The flexibility, sturdiness, and sheer scope of the system make it something to behold. In my opinion, it's a work of art and a fantastic piece of gaming design. As you can see from the comments, many players find it rather crunchy, but the crunchiness all comes in the character creation, and is dependent on how specifically customized you'd like your character to be. You can literally create any kind of character you like, but you might have to spend some time to do so. Thankfully, Hero offers lots of examples (even whole books) of example powers, equipment, vehicles, characters, etc. Also, one thing I've found is that once you've made characters and started playing, the system is pretty straightforward and fairly quick and easy to play. Combat can take a bit of time, but, again, it's a trade off between detail and speed. Hero gives you the choice to play how you would like to play.
If you choose to pick up the system, one thing that might streamline the gameplay (and save you some money) is Champions Complete. The Hero System is actually a generic system designed to be used to create games for any style/genre/time period/power level. It started as a superhero only game (Champions) but expanded from there into other genres. The 6th edition core books give rules for the system from this default, as a universal system. Champions is still the Hero System superhero "brand," but, if you buy the 6th ed core books, you'll be getting resources that let you play a lot more than superheroes. If you're interested in playing ONLY superheroes, you may want to check Champions Complete here and here (direct from the company, as a book bundled with a pdf). Same game, same system, and same rules, except that everything you need is contained in one book and streamlined to focus more specifically on superhero games.
