Drug addiction and the ills it causes still exists in places where drug interdiction has driven the supply to zero. Vancouver has in the past been so successful in prohibition that authorities cannot find opiates of abuse on the streets, yet heroin addicts were still everywhere. If we can have addiction with no drugs, it's not the drugs.

In the early 1900’s drug addiction was treated as a medical problem, by doctors. If you were addicted to opioids they didn’t just cut you off immediately because they were afraid of the DEA. They treated the problem.
full legalization is many decades away.

I don't know if we're ready for full legalization, but full decriminalization is certainly overdue.
It should be painfully obvious how cruel it is to lock human beings behind cages for having full autonomy over their body.
Even more so with Psychedelics.
Holiday was killed by the government.
If you ever read a book on the drug war, read that one. It will change your life and your views on addiction and the drug war. Probably one of the best books I've ever read.
