Let me give you an example of why you're wrong.
A friend and I went to visit her grandmother a while back, and the grandmother, being a religious person, brought us to her church.
It was a tiny congregation mostly made up of lower-class old folks that only filled up about a quarter of the pews in the small, run-down church. Hardly enough people there to make anyone who works at the church well-off, much less wealthy.
The pastor was an old, paranoid nutcase who firmly believed that society was going to collapse any day now. His sermon was about that, and about how it was going to be the responsibility of Christians to care for those who can't care for themselves in this upcoming post-collapse society. He gave advice about food storage and how it was everyone's responsibility to have more food around than was needed for their family, so they could help the desperate.
When the sermon ended, you know what that crazy bastard did? He brought out two pallets of those buckets of emergency food rations that he used the church's funds to purchase for his congregation, and gave one out to every family that was there.
There are plenty of money-hungry churches out there (I'm yet to see a single mega-church that doesn't fit this description), but you'll have a hard time convincing me that that paranoid man started up his church for any other reason than to do what he believed was best for his congregation.
