Prime it (don't skip this, it really does help)
take your time
invest in a lit magnifying glass if you don't have one already (really helps with details)
use dry brushing techniques (seriously the easiest way to get huge amounts of detail)
use some form of stand (something made for this, or you can take a cork/bottle/whatever and some blue tack)
use washes (you can make your own really easily, youtube has a bunch of tutorials for all types of materials)
if you use washes, use them lightly, multiple layers of washes usually work better than one thick layer
