Yes to Clover hooks. Someone posted the other day that they were on sale for around $33 on amazon
Looks like the Clover set is just under $32 on Amazon.
Honestly I've stood in Michael's so many times thinking I was about to get an amazing deal, only to do some Googling (on their very convenient free wifi) and realize that even with the coupon I was just getting the going rate. Which might sometimes still be worth it if I'm there already, but isn't as exciting as thinking I won the crafting lottery.
Clover amour these are going to be most peoples recommendations, they are a good middle of the road crochet hook, not super fancy like furls, not bargain basement offbrand boye, currently on sale even. my friend that uses these swears by them, to the point of cursing herself for not getting them earlier than she did
I'm seconding the Clover Armor hooks. If you're in the US they aren't too expensive on Amazon. For the larger sizes, the best deal I found was to just use a 50% off coupon at Joann's and get one at a time.

The clover amour hooks are popular. They glide through the yarn really well, and have ergonomic handles that help with wrist strain. I like mine a lot. I love the clover hooks. I had the regular metal ones when I started but had trouble holding them. Found the clover Armour hooks and I'll never go back!
Edit: here's a link https://smile.amazon.com/Clover-3672-Amour-Crochet-sizes/dp/B00B2CCA6W/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=clover+crochet+hooks&qid=1595545019&sprefix=Clover+cr&sr=8-3
So like a super cheap option are pencil grippers. You can also try some different ergonomic hooks and see if there is one you love. Personally i love the clover clover armor hooks.
clover amour they are a bit pricey but worth every Penny imo. I’ve had mine for about three years or so now and no issues with breaking or handles slipping off. I bought mine in the link I added from amazon (Canada) they are actually a great price right now. But if you’re in the states I hear places like joannes often has 50% off coupons you can use instore on them. And maybe Michaels?
Hi! I think these are fine but will probably hurt in the long run. I have fallen in love with Tulip and Clover, but they’re pricey! But I just came across a deal on Amazon for anClover Amour 12 hook ser for $50 which is the cheapest I’ve seen. This set is usually $100. (USD)
Here’s the link if you’re interested. Hopefully the deal still shows locally: Clover 3672 Amour Crochet Hook Set, 10 sizes https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B2CCA6W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_700K9JNVKH9JHR8BG1EN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If you want some really nice and comfortable hooks (and don’t mind splurging a bit), I HIGHLY recommend the Amour Clover hooks! Amazon has a great deal on the set of 10 (compared to $75 at places like JoAnn). My mom gifted me the set and I bought some larger sizes too and they made crocheting much more comfortable!
the set of clover amour is currently on sale on amazon, if you are still interested in picking up a set, the boye ones work well though, i found the handles slipped off after a while for me and i didn't like the texture of the handles, they felt sticky but that might just be me being fussy.
ergonomic hooks are great though.
If you don't want to give up inline heads (susan bates I see you there in the picture) you can attach a pencil grip to hooks, use a rubber band as a spacer if it tries to slide off on you.
People seem to rave about Clover hooks. https://www.amazon.com/Clover-3672-Amour-Crochet-sizes/dp/B00B2CCA6W (they're less than 30 USD right now) I have off brand ergonomic hooks from Amazon and they work fine for me. What does she typically make? The hooks I linked go from 2.25 mm up to 5.5 mm.
Clover Armour hooks are pretty much the gold standard. They’re pricey, but well worth it IMO. My hands and wrist were hurting while crocheting before I got these hooks. They’re very high quality and I can’t see myself ever using any other kind of hook.
On sale on Amazon. This is a fantastic price. I’m Canadian so I paid more but these are what I’m taking about.
They are indeed the Clover Amour hooks, I got them here.
Have you tried the Clovers Armour set? They are a cross between a Boye head and Bates inline, who th ergonomic handles. I have this set, and would like the bigger hooks too, but need to get them one at a time with coupons, cuz they are a rip off on Amz.

I also like the Bates with the bamboo handles and have several sets of those.

Looks like it's the same set that Amazon has for $38.76 - so not quite as amazing of a deal as I originally thought, but the extras are still kinda awesome (and gives you an excuse to place a Knit Picks order if you were thinking about it anyway ;)
I was recently gifted the Amour Crochet Hook Set and it is amazing! The hooks glide right through the stitches and I can crochet for hours without my hands cramping/getting sore. I highly recommend!
As already mentioned, a yarn winder could be helpful too if she doesn’t have one! And I know it’s not considered personal, but I love getting gift cards – I usually always have a yarn on deck that I want to buy so most of the time, I’d rather get a gift card so I can pick what I what!
Edit: the hook set is available on amazon for $36
You won't be the first person thats posted this here, hun, don't you worry about that. It sounds like she makes gifts for others, so there's a couple options.
You could get her a super fancy yarn to make something for herself (hobbii.com something in the cotton kings set or something to make herself a shawl) or a Sheepjes whirl (you can also find those on amazon.)
If she's using a basic crochet hook set, something in the little metal stick with hook on the end family, you could look into getting her a nice crochet hook set, like a clover hook set, or poke around on etsy for a interchangeable crochet hook set. they have acrylic handles with swappable heads, someone posted a picture of one a few days ago even. hers was purple but i've seen many many colors. Ergonomic handled hooks are something I wish I had when I started crocheting fore score and we're not admitting how long ago.
If she's set on those kind of things a yarn bowl seems to be the top of every crocheter's 'want, but won't get for myself' list, there are both very classy wooden ones and sarcastic ones ( https://lennymud.com/collections/yarn-bowl I crochet so I don't choke people is a personal favorite, but there's a ton of hand made options there.)
*cough* and yarn project bags, those are great too!

Anything you get her that shows you support her is special though, these things are suggestions, just kind of general since we can't really know your wife but anything from the heart is almost certain to be well received.
'fancy' and 'high quality' kind of vary by what you want to do, the most like luxurious ones are furls hooks, but if you do a lot of tiny work with thread those are no good, not enough small sizes. Another higher end option is checking etsy for interchangeable crochet handle sets, the turned ones are lovely but I warn you with them that the sizes are off, things will turn out looser, which isn't always a bad thing, just something to keep in mind.
are your current metal ones boye or susan bates, should be on the little thumb rest place with size information and I really only ask because if you learned on one switching to the other can have a bit of a learning curve, neither is better than the other, the tools are just a conduit for creativity, after all.
Clover Amour are a good set of hooks, a lot of people swear by them, and you can get them in every size from 'trying to crochet with a nylon thread' to ' I didn't know yarn came in rope sizes' pretty easily.
I personally have a set of Susan Bates silvalume soft ergonomics, sadly can't buy them as a set but yarnspirations.com shipping was pretty fast and they aren't terribly priced.
Other brands I've heard good things about but never had the pleasure of using would be Prym and Tulip Etimo.
I agree, I made the exact same transition. Much more comfortable. Here they are on Amazon.
A subscription yarn club would be fun! I've never used one, but this one sounds awesome. (Maybe give as a gift card so she can have the fun of filling out her preferences? Unless those can be changed later.) The reason this one sounds cool is that it has more than just yarn, you get some input into the colors & weights of yarn you like, it doesn't cater specifically to knitters as some do, and it includes a surprise!

Personally, I really want these: https://www.amazon.com/Clover-3672-Amour-Crochet-sizes/dp/B00B2CCA6W
I'd call them middle of the road, especially at the price I'm seeing on Amazon.
This is my go-to set. https://www.amazon.com/Clover-3672-Amour-Crochet-sizes/dp/B00B2CCA6W
I got my set off Amazon, which for some reason typically has them for way cheaper than Michaels or Joanns. Fortunately my set was real and not counterfeit. Some people have had experiences where they were sent counterfeits. So if you'd like to give it a try this is the link :
And helpful tip if anyone decides to go the Amazon route and doesn't know if they were sent the real thing.
Check for a few things:
Hope this helps someone since I know these hooks can be really expensive :)

It’s such a personal preference thing.
Yup! Just a little bit of rubber to provide some grip and widen the handle a bit to make it easier to hold. I remember finding it easier on my hands when I made the switch. Clover hooks but I bought a cheapie set on Amazon like this. I’ve never used the clover ones

Time for a little recon: There's a lot of different kinds of hooks, do you know what she has now? are they more rounded or more pointy? what does she typically make?
Most people would seem to agree that Furls are the absolute best crochet hooks but they can be super expensive, think 16$-170$ dollars per unit which is out of most people's price range for crochet hooks.
There are options like the Interchangeable crochet hook handles on etsy, still pricey but you can get the handles made to order, favorite colors ahoy! There are a ton of artists that make these, so that's just a generic search link.
Clover Hooks are also an option, they are available on amazon on sale at the moment and have also been highly regarded by people I've seen that purchased them.

I do hope you find the right fit for your grandma!

The set is usually under $50 on Amazon. Here is a link. They also sell them with a case or individually for about $8.
These ones are just as good for half the money but they don't come with a case. http://www.amazon.com/Clover-3672-Amour-Crochet-sizes/dp/B00B2CCA6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421075180&sr=8-1&keywords=clover+crochet
